RECAP:

The team’s new case is fraught with red tape. Their latest victim, Lucas Cross, is an alleged rapist. He was found murdered in his apartment after his loud music alerted his neighbors to trouble.

Although, when the detectives arrived on the scene, they soon noticed that maybe their victim wasn’t really done with his extracurricular activities i.e. attacking women. His house had a deadbolt on it that would keep anyone the Lucas chose locked in even if it was against their wish. Besides that strange addition, nothing appeared to be missing. There was even still a wallet on Lucas’s corpse. So that with the fact that he had wine laid out and condoms on his persons made the detectives believe that a victim either lured another woman back to his place or someone in Lucas’s past planned on trapping him in at his own apartment.

Lucas was accused of rape a few years ago and got off on a stupid technicality. They had DNA and defensive wounds and still none of that matter in the face of the lab technician working with falsified papers. There was even a second victim that was brought to expose a history, but she wasn’t allowed to testify because she was raped overseas while in the army.

So after all of that Lucas got to walk, though he actually danced out of court and the detectives figured someone must still be mad about that. They brought in the original accuser, Jackie Chaidez, against the DA’s wishes. He didn’t want them to bother the only victim he thought counted. But the team did bring her in and they heard her give them a pretty air-tight alibi. Perhaps too neat and too convenient of an alibi!

However Lucas’s other victim diverted their attention. The woman who was in the army, Corporal Laura Day, it seems never left California once the case was over. She stayed there and funnily enough she chose to live in an apartment barely a mile away from her attacker. Though when they brought her in she was clearly too inebriated to give them any answers as to why she would stick around and especially near to someone that hurt her.

Raydor asked Amy to take their suspect out for some coffee to sober her up. And while there were Amy began asking Laura a few questions about her attack. Because Lucas ended up having a pattern. He would use a knife to threaten his victims and then he would use music to drown out their screams. All very familiar to the way he died. Though Amy didn’t say so nor did she have to seeing as Laura admitted to cutting Lucas’s throat. A fact that wasn’t released to the public. She said she wanted to watch him struggle and then imitated the sounds he made.

It was clearly a confession even if it wasn’t inadmissible. Laura had confessed without being mirandized and she was still drunk. So Amy had to try for a second go at getting her confession. And amazingly it wasn’t hard to get Laura to confess again. It was almost too easy and that’s what put Amy on edge.

Sure, she could have taken the confession at face value, but there were some holes in Laura’s story. She claimed to have heard Lucas choke and then said she turned on the music prior to stabbing him. That music was so loud it woke the neighbors so how could she hear Lucas’s final breaths with that music pumping?

Laura didn’t kill her attacker. She only wished she did and covered up for the person that actually did it. Jackie was the real killer while Laura was simply lucky to hear the DA accidentally drop a reveling detail about Lucas’s murder.

Jackie’s alibi was her sister who can pass as Jackie with no problem. They switched cars and the sister charged her dinner to Jackie’s credit card. It was nearly the perfect plan. The only flaw in it was that there was a party at the restaurant that same night. The sister thought they were safe because the restaurant didn’t have security cameras but someone took pictures at the party. Sadly, for Jackie the photos only caught her sister in its frames.

Jackie confessed once her sister was threatened to be brought in as an accomplice. She couldn’t do that to her sister. Though Rusty’s mom would use any trick in the book to manipulate her son. She tried to get him to go fill in an illegal prescriptions pill order for her and what stopped Rusty was the fact that he didn’t have to deal with his doubts all on his own. He took the prescription to Raydor and she told him it was a fake.

Not only was fake but most users tend to take it to cover up heroin usage. So Rusty told his mom that he wasn’t going to help her and tried to say it was his fault that she took drugs. She said the shame of having a gay son was why she turned to them in the first place. Yet she went too far with her comments and she ended up losing the son she claimed to be ashamed of but who was the only person who loved her.

He kept ignoring her and her calls. And eventually he learned she never made it to the halfway house and was back on drugs before a day had even pass.
