In tonight’s The Resident episode, a tow truck driver found a little girl wandering the streets in the freezing rain. He brought her to the hospital to get checked out and they called the authorities. They had to after the little girl was revealed to have injuries. Particularly ones like an arm torn out of its socket. Conrad was the doctor on call when she was brought in and he developed a bond with the little girl. She came to trust him. Conrad tried to get her to talk and she wouldn’t say a word. Not even when her arm was popped back in. She didn’t cry out in pain or anything. She didn’t even flinch. It was like she was used to it by now and that was so sad all on its own that Conrad didn’t want to leave her. He reported it. It was going to be passed onto Atlanta PD.

In the meantime, Jane Doe got to stay at the hospital. Her injuries were still being treated and Conrad wanted to send her for scans. He also wanted to get her a warm meal. He brought some food from the hospital cafeteria. He was just showing it off to Jane when he noticed her grimacing. She still didn’t say a word and so the doctors had to guess. They were quickly able to determine that the pain was coming from her feet. She had blisters like she had been standing in the rain for a while. The cold outside must have numbed them and the warmer she got the more she felt the pain. And she wasn’t talking while another patient was.

Devon was buying sneakers that had just been released at some event going on. As he was waiting to buy the shoes, he met a young woman. An obese woman who was suffering from some breathing problems and he thought it could be serious. He brought her to Chastain. He ordered several tests for her and every step of the way there was someone complaining about her being too big. Even AJ said it. AJ was a bit preoccupied with his own situation. But that shouldn’t be his excuse for being a jerk. He was a jerk to the patient. He demanded more tests before he was willing to consider Devon’s theory on what could be wrong.

So, Devon ordered more tests. It meant running into more people who complained about the patient’s weight and he just ignored them. He stuck up for his patient. He was probably the first person to do so in a while. Ms. Cabot appreciated what he was doing for her. Unfortunately, no one else did. AJ saw the results of the tests and he thought it was still inconclusive because of the patient’s weight was clouding some of the scans. He wanted Devon to go in to explain to the patient. Devon didn’t see the need. Not that AJ let that stop him because he said the patient needed to understand that she’s obese. And so Devon said that the patient perfectly understands.

AJ later spoke directly to her himself. He told her that they couldn’t get to the root of the problem because she was overweight and because she was also bulimic. They found signs of it. They know that she makes herself vomit to try and lose the weight and they weren’t judging her for it. They were just letting it know why finding out what’s wrong was so difficult for them. Ms. Cabot came to appreciate AJ candor the same way she came to respect Devon’s kindness. She knows they weren’t working against her and that they had her best interests at heart. And now that AJ was no longer being needlessly tactless, things went about much easier.

Conrad meanwhile was struggling to treat little Jane. The hospital was given temporary guardianship of the little girl and they meant they could treat her. They couldn’t just couldn’t do any guesswork. They needed an adult to sign off on it. The hospital did contact Atlanta PD. They were told that Jane matched the description of a little girl that was missing and so the proper channels were being contacted but their Jane wasn’t that girl and so Cade went out to investigate all on her own. She found out from Jane that she lived in her car. Cade went to a homeless encampment and she met Jane’s sister.

The sister identified Jane as someone named Scout. She said their car was hit by lightning. It just didn’t explain the full set of injuries on both girls. Cade still brought the sister to the hospital so that the teenager could get treatment and she told Conrad about finding a relative for Scout. By then, Scout had to be rushed into the OR. The infection in her leg had spread and the doctors had to do everything possible just so that they wouldn’t amputate the leg. A missing leg was hard enough on an adult person. It would have been even harder on a little girl living in her car. The sister ended up spilling the whole story. The sister said that she and Jane ran away from home because their dad was abusive.

Their mom disappeared. Their dad claimed she ran away. The girls didn’t believe him because they knew he was abusive to all of them and that’s when Scout stopped talking. She stopped talking the moment she suspected her mother was dead. Th girls both suspected it and they ended up running away after he started hitting Scout. They made it to the encampment with the car they had also stolen. It wasn’t long before the storm brought lightning and the older girl was so disoriented that by time she came too she didn’t see her sister. And so it’s a good thing she was also brought to Chastain for treatment.

Scout’s sister was there when she woke up after surgery. She immediately called her sister by her name. “Anna”. It was the first word that Scout had said in a while and it confirmed what they all suspected. Scout could speak. She was just traumatized. Scout and Anna will not have to return to their father. They can now start over with better care.

Roxie Cabot was also treated and both doctors found her obese specialist who could help her with her dietary plan. And they got her treatment for her bulimia.

But Dr. Bell found out he was competing for a position on the medical board with a doctor by the name of Robert Porter. He later asked Billie for a recommendation. He even told her about the other doctor in the running and she got scared. Porter was the man who raped her when she was thirteen. She went from talking to Bell to talking to Voss and Voss reported what Billie told her. She also got a meeting for Billie to talk directly to the medical board. And so Billie will finally get to tell her story.

THE END!
