Tonight’s episode begins with Kate’s wedding, Madison and Beth are with her in the room and Kevin tries to get him but they push him out. Beth tells Kate that she is an incredibly zen bride. Just then, Kate gets a call, it is Toby, he congratulates her and says the day they signed their divorce papers, she said something to him, and he sees it now.
We go back to the day they found Jack in the park when he got out of the house, he is sleeping so Kate goes into the kitchen to be with Toby. He tells her that he is going to take the job in LA, it is a huge step back, but he is willing to do anything to save his family. She tells him that they also have to go to couple’s therapy, he says whatever it takes.
Then, Toby and Kate are in therapy, for the most part, it goes well until Kate starts showing up late for an appointment and Toby is annoyed. He tells her she can arrive late and he can leave early, and he walks out.
The story moves to Kate and Philip’s engagement party. Madison asks them if they have looked at wedding venues yet. Kevin walks in with Lesly, a friend of his, she is the Statefarm girl. Madison is there with Elijah, she looks happy and pregnant. Kevin tells Kate that he is glad that she is good friends again with Madison. Beth is there, she is eating oysters and Randall hangs up the phone, to hug Kate. Rebecca is there with Miguel, she congratulates Kate and Phillip. Kate gets called up on stage and says a few years ago this song changed everything for them, she calls Phillip on stage.
Then, we go to a birthday party where the family is together, this time Kevin is with Trojan girl and Kevin asks about Kate’s job and says it is her dream job, Toby makes a sarcastic comment about “now if it just paid something we would really come out on top.” Kate is shocked, he says it was a jab at the school, not at her. Kate goes to her room, Kevin follows her there and she is crying. She asks him how will she know if her marriage is done, Kevin tells her that she will know if it happens, and she and the kids will be fine and she will be happy again.
Phillip is sitting on Jack’s bed with him, he has the engagement ring in his hand, and Jack tells him not to worry, it is going to go well. At dinner, Phillip gets up and gets down on one knee, opens the ring, and asks Kate to marry him, he tells her that he loves her and her children and he is the happiest when he is with them. Jack and Haley pull out signs that say, “say yes.” Kate says yes.
Back to therapy, Kate and Toby are asked when was the last time they had dinner together. Then we see Toby bringing out dinner to the table, Kate is sitting there, and the kids are not. She asks him about work, he says it was good, he got out at five. She says her day was the usual. She asks him how was bedtime, he says he had to read Haley a book six times. They start to get into an argument about bedtime, he raises his voice and tells her that he is a good dad and she criticizes everything, she sucks out his joy. He says he is miserable because he is with her. He says his life is rigged, all she wants is for him to be like Jack Pearson. Jack shouts for them, his toy is in the toilet, and he tells them to stop shouting. Toby tells her that he promised himself that he would be like his parents, and have his kids listen to crap like that. Kate tells him it is over, it is time.
Toby meets Phillip in a bar for drinks. Toby tells him that he knows he and Kate are getting serious, so since he will be spending more time with his kids, he wants to let him know what he expects when he is around his children. Phillip tells him that he intends on proposing soon. Toby tells him it is important that he not yell at the children. Toby says he thought if they fixed what was broken, they would get back together and now they are divorced and he is going to marry Kate. Phillip tells him that he loves his kids and he feels honored to be able to help raise them.
Then, we see Toby packing his things up while Kate is playing with the children, Toby has found himself an apartment. They meet with a divorce lawyer to divide the assets. They are signing the paper in two days and Toby tells her there is still time, they don’t have to do this. He says they should go back to counseling, she says no, she doesn’t want to – she can finally breathe. He says he is terrified, he doesn’t want to start over again, this does not have to be the way their story ends. He kisses her. She tells him that she is sorry, but she can’t. He says he guesses that is the last time he will kiss his wife.
Kate and Phillip are on their first date and a mariachi band comes near them to play while they are drinking margaritas. She touches his hand and feels something, she tells him that she was married to a wonderful man, they loved each other a lot and it wasn’t enough. She asks him what he is doing with her, he is a serial dater that is used to toothpick size women and she isn’t one. He says he didn’t notice that she is not skinny. He says he was married once too, she was beautiful too, in an imperfect way. They were happy for a really long time, they had trouble conceiving. They argued about trying again to have a baby, she walked out on him but only made it five minutes when she was hit by a drunk driver, killed instantly. So, to answer her question, he is trying to be happy again and she makes him happy, so that is what he is doing. He leans in and kisses her.
