In tonight’s Chicago PD episode, Detective Adam Ruzek had to complete an exam to get reinstated. When the moment came to do the test, Ruzek couldn’t complete it. He just blanked on everything he knew. He was struggling with being his old self. He was all out of sorts. He couldn’t get reinstated. He even felt out of step with his family.

Ruzek was struggling so much that he fell back into old habits. He started gambling again. He knows he’s not supposed to because he had problems with it in the past and so he used one of his old undercover aliases. He got into contact with a criminal informant. They both attended a secret poker game that went south.

Adam made several critical mistakes. He used a cover when he hasn’t been reinstated. He involved a criminal informant in a technically illegal game and thus a crime.

He also fired an unmarked gun because the game did go south. Two masked men showed up with guns demanding money. One of the men they were robbing reached for his own gun. It led to a shootout with two dead. The masked men escaped not long after Ruzek began firing at them with his undercover gun. And so Ruzek’s career could end because of what happened that night.

Ruzek called Voight right after everything went down. Voight told Ruzek to leave the scene. He wanted Ruzek to pretend like he was never there and Ruzek followed that order.

Voight managed to take over the case after that. He pushed out robbery/homicide from taking over. He tried to hide Ruzek’s part in all of this, but Ruzek’s bullets alerted IAD. They later came by Voight’s office. They talked to him. He protected Ruzek only he also faced questions from Detective Burgess. Burgess was living with Ruzek. They were raising a daughter together.

Burgess realized something was up when Voight took the case seemingly out of nowhere. Her suspicions were confirmed after IAD showed up. Voight told her about Ruzek’s involvement in the poker game.

She would later question Ruzek about it and he downplayed what happened. He said that his old contact reached out to him because something was going down. He pretended like he went to the game because he wanted to still be a cop. That wasn’t the truth. He went to the game because he was looking for a high from gambling.

Burgess chose to believe Ruzek’s story. It didn’t matter to her that he originally lied to her about where he was going that night. She chose to believe his version of events and he continued to lie to her. Ruzek was told by Voight to stay at home. Voight said he’d handle the rest. He expected Ruzek to follow orders and all Ruzek did was seek out trouble. Ruzek contacted his old criminal informant again. He heard from Burgess that the robbery was an inside job. She thought it involved two brothers and so Ruzek asked Zaco about brothers hanging around the bar.

Zaco came up with names. Tory and Clay Bala. He said that Troy was dating a woman by the name of Gigi. Zaco gave Ruzek Gigi’s address and Ruzek rushed over there. He was only supposed to be on guard until Voight arrived however Ruzek overheard a shooting. He went rushing in. He missed the shooter by a few minutes. He found one of the brothers dying and he asked him who did this. They said it was Wes Arbin. He ran the poker game. It was his money on the line and so he must have stolen from himself in order to steal from others as well in the robbery.

Ruzek didn’t get the brother’s last confession on tape. He also couldn’t explain why he was at the scene. He had to leave and Voight did his best to hide the fact that Ruzek was ever there. The rest of the team did eventually piece together what happened only Voight forced them to fall into line. Voight also broke one of Ruzek’s promises. He involved Zaco in the case. They sat on Zaco until he bought drugs and then they arrested him to get him to flip on Wes Arbin. And so Zaco wanted things from them.

Zaco wanted his sister to get better housing. He wanted the drug charges against himself dropped. He also demanded to be paid good C.I. money.

Either Zaco gets all of his demands met or he brings Ruzek down with him. Zaco told Burgess all about how Ruzek begged him to go to a game with him. Burgess could have fallen apart and instead she gave in to Zaco’s demands. He agreed to wear a wire when he met up with Wes. Only Wes was a lot smarter than people thought. He suspected Zaco from the beginning.

Wes escaped the police following him. They got too far away for them to hear anything on the wire. Wes escaped with Zaco and he would have killed him if Ruzek hadn’t managed to hunt down Zaco. He figured out where Wes took him. He got to the scene first. He called for backup and he saved Zaco’s life. Wes had shot Zaco before running only he eventually died when he tried to escape on the roof and fell. And sadly Zaco also later died from his wounds at the hospital.

And regardless of what happened, Ruzek’s cover was protected and he later heard that he surprisingly passed his reinstatement exam.

THE END!
