In tonight’s Chicago Fire episode, the new recruit has issues. Vasquez has been bounced from several firehouses. All for behavioral problems. Vasquez was trouble and Pascal was forced to take him as a favor to someone else. He just didn’t have to stick the problem with Kidd. He did so because she’s handled tough people before.
He thought she could make Vasquez into a great firefighter and he failed to see that she wasn’t a miracle worker. She wasn’t supposed to help people with their personal lives. They shouldn’t even be bringing their personal lives into work with them.
Much less for such a dangerous job. They handled tough cases all the time. Kidd needed to know she could trust the person at her back. She doesn’t know if she can trust Vasquez and he hasn’t shown her anything good.
He’s disobeyed orders. He hid an injury that she still doesn’t know about. He also used to be at the police academy before he switched over to the fire academy. He didn’t explain and that made Kidd know he was keeping secrets. She needed to know those secrets if they were going to be a problem for her.
Vasquez has a family member in prison. They were calling him from said prison while he was on shift. He refused to take the call around the others. He didn’t want them to know. He very nearly came to blows with a cop at the firing range.
The cop brought up his family. It was a touchy subject for Vasquez. He might have left the police academy after he felt betrayed by his former friends there. Vasquez’s secret didn’t matter unless he kept proving to be a problem at work and he was doing so. He made a risky move on the last call.
Yes, it showed he had grit. The fact that he was willing to blow himself up to keep a tank from leveling the block. It also showed that he doesn’t listen to his lieutenant. Kidd didn’t give him an order.
She tried to stop him. He ignored his boss and it wasn’t the first time. Kidd decided to change her approach after that call. She had him write up the report of his actions. She would normally write the reports only she felt having him write it would force him to list out the reasons he broke chain of command.
Kidd got the idea from a potential foster child. Kidd and her husband were asked if they were willing to become foster parents to older kids. Most people want younger child with the hopes of adopting. The older kids usually stay in the system until the age out and that wasn’t Isaiah’s situation at all. His mom was in a car accident. His father wasn’t in the picture and so he had nowhere to go while his mom slowly recovers. He’s been in a group with other kids. And having a home again will help him.
Kidd and Severide agreed to take him in. Kidd also noticed that it wasn’t grit that Vasquez has. It was a death wish. The young man didn’t care about his own life and that came out during the debrief. He didn’t count his life. He wasn’t scared. He didn’t care about the possibility of dying. He’s shown more emotions over the debrief than he did at death. Kidd has no idea what to do with him after that. She chose to instead hyper focus on Isaiah. Isaiah was fourteen. Severide asked Cruz what he would need. And it was purely a gaming console.
Cruz didn’t think the kid would notice anything else. Only Isaiah surprised them. He just wanted to focus on homework and studying for a big test. He wasn’t looking to get attached in any way. He knew he’d have a home to go to and that it wasn’t their place. It was never going to be their place. That had nothing to do with the couple. They really were good people and taking him was still helpful. Violet meanwhile was onto a case. She and Novak responded to a call where they found the door unlocked. The victim was passed out on the floor.
She had a stab wound to her abdomen. She claimed it was an accident. She said she accidentally stabbed herself while she was making dinner and she had to be rushed to the hospital because the knife that stabbed her had Serano peppers still on it. It inflamed her wound. The paramedics thought the case was odd and they were prepared to ignore it when they got another call about another accidentally slash to the forearm. The man’s wounds were inflamed because he was attacked by the same weapon that had peppers on it.
What the paramedics couldn’t figure out was the connection. Karl and Laura didn’t live with each other. They were from different area albeit with similar fantastical stories. The paramedics called the cops in case this was domestic violence. The cops couldn’t do anything because the victims weren’t talking. They were sticking to their stories. Laura also has a condition that makes her pass out at the sight of blood. She couldn’t have made that 911 call or leave the door unlocked. So, who did?
Violet became even more convinced that something was going on. She needed a distraction after her best friend told her that he was getting furloughed to New York City. Ritter wanted to be with Dwayne. Violet convinced him to pursue the relationship because of her regrets from Carver. She just didn’t know it would lead to Ritter moving to a different city. She honed in on this case so that she wouldn’t deal with her feelings. She found out that Karl was Laura’s brother. Laura kept her ex-husband’s last name.
Karl has a bunch of mental disorders that were hard to handle. The two of them struggled over the knife. Laura didn’t want Karl going to prison over it. Novak and Violet got where she was coming from. They weren’t going to fight Laura on this. She was doing the best she can with little resources. It even gave the paramedics the push they needed to escort Ritter to the airport. They were going to support their friend no matter how sad they were about missing him. And Kidd decided to give Vasquez a chance after she saw how good of a firefighter he was.
He even broke her record, but Vasquez’s death stemmed from his father being in prison and its left him with some anger issues with anyone that brings it up.
THE END!
