Skye tells the truth in installments. She’s never told the full story right off the bat. Her mother should have realized that and she didn’t because Skye was her blindspot. She always wants to believe her. Skye waited until the last possible moment to reveal she bought the knife. The murder weapon in her boyfriend’s homicide. She told her mother right before their home was searched. Mickey may be the sheriff, but it was the District Attorney that signed off on a warrant and he had her department going through her house for any possible evidence.

Mickey tried to get out ahead of that receipt for the knife. She told Boone about it. They found it and the District Attorney was running with this like it was crucial evidence. It wasn’t. The knife itself was still in fact missing. Not that evidence stopped the District Attorney from pressing charges. He was eyeing the position of Attorney General in the next election and this could be his make it or break it case. He arrested the sheriff’s daughter. He wouldn’t let the deputies from her department handle the case anymore. His office was taking over.

Even Boone found himself ousted. Cassidy was also on the outs with Travis. He talked to her like she was just another deputy because she was ultimately the cop that arrested his daughter. Travis takes things like that personally. He’d probably mind that his ex-wife was now investigating this case too. Mickey couldn’t go into work so she chose to use her paid leave. She planned on investigating Brandon’s murder herself and one of the first things she did was talk to Brandon’s mother. His mother would know his best.

Brandon got mixed up with some bad people. He started keeping his mother at a distance the past year. Before that, he was a good kid with a normal childhood. She showed Mickey his car. Mickey quickly found the hidden compartment where Brandon hid his burner phone. The one he used for business. Mickey looked through the phone. She found Ricky’s number. Ricky was Skye’s cousin. Travis’s nephew. Mickey called him over to her house and he came with his mom who was also curious what this was about.

When his mom learned that his cousin introduced him to her junkie boyfriend, she was livid. She couldn’t believe that Skye would risk Ricky’s sobriety. Ricky lost all of his privileges. He answered Mickey’s questions. He didn’t know who was calling Brandon. He just knew that Brandon owed the guy a lot of money and couldn’t repay it. Ricky and his mom left after that. She was driving him straight back to rehab. She was also going to put a stop between him and Skye visiting each other if Skye was proving to be such a bad influence.

What Mickey didn’t say was that Ricky’s number was found on Brandon’s work phone. Not his everyday phone. The work phone implied that Ricky was a customer of his and so it’s a good thing he’s going back to rehab. He clearly needs it. It also wasn’t Skye’s fault that he needed it. Mickey kept digging into the case. She talked to Travis. He stopped by the house. His concern was on Skye right now. He wanted her to look presentable at arraignment. He gathered her clothes and her favorite boots. He wanted her to feel safe.

Travis also told Mickey that they didn’t get divorced because she was always the bad guy. They got divorced because she never asked for help with anything. Mickey decided to change that. She went to her boyfriend. The secret DEA Agent. She doesn’t know his real name. Only that he was DEA. He was undercover and couldn’t reveal anything about himself. He did run that phone number as a favor to her. It came back as unlisted. They couldn’t force the cell company to reveal anything without a warrant. This was off the books investigation after all.

Mickey decided to keep it off the books. She broke into the evidence locker. She took a photo of the drugs she confiscated off of Brandon and she tracked down the dealer with Dawson’s help. Boone saw her sneak in. He just pretended like he didn’t. It came back as Adrian Smith’s own brand. Smith was notoriously nasty. Mickey went over to his place and she decided to question him by herself. They got into a fight when Smith pulled a gun. It quickly turn into a fist fight with Smith winning until Dawson helped him.

Dawson broke cover to shoot Smith. He kept Mickey safe. He was going to get reassigned after this, but his unimpeachable record backed up Mickey and they found the real murder weapon. Smith was their killer. He’s dead now. Mickey also has to deal with the fact that her father tried to confess to Brandon’s murder. He even bought the duplicate knife from the same place where Skye bought Brandon’s. It worked for all of five minutes until they checked the surveillance cameras at the store. Dawson’s real name is Alec and now Mickey can’t say she doesn’t know him.

Skye also gave Brandon’s lyric book to his mom to help.

Cass helped three people at the same time. She introduced an evicted father and son to a lonely elderly woman with a garage apartment. It turns out they could be the family that each other needs. And it helped Cass now that her relationship with Travis is on rocky ground.

THE END
