In tonight’s The Voice episode, tonight was the first night of the Battles. These battles showed their coaches who stepped up and who cracked under pressure. It’s one thing to have a great audition. It’s quite another to have a great second performance. Plus, there was a surprise this season.

The contestants had to pick who they were battling with. They picked their partners for their duets and it was up to their coaches to pick the song. The stakes were high this season. Team Snoop was up first. Lizzo was his advising coach. She helped him with his first battle that proved to be the toughest.

Yoshihanaa and Natalia were the first battle. They chose each other because of their soulful roots with jazzy undertones. Snoop normally wouldn’t have paired them together because he knew they’d make this a tough battle. One was naturally effortless and the other was maximum effort. They put on a great performance. They made it near impossible to choose between them. Snoop gave them the song “You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman”. Their voices pushed each other to be better. And Snoop was left in tears.

The other coaches were split on this one. Snoop had to think about it and his heart told him to go with Yoshihanaa. Only he used his Save on Natalia. He couldn’t let either of them go and there goes his one Save. Next up was Team Reba. Reba’s advisor this season was Nick Jonas. He’s been a coach. He’s been part of a group and a solo artist. He also knew Reba since he was a kid because they were both in the infamous Broadway play called “Annie, Get Your Gun”. And now he was her favorite Jonas brother.

Her team were another one having a hard time grasping the new concept. Choosing their own partner could be hard because often they wanted to choose their friends. This goes even when they weren’t in the same genres. Daron and Aaron from her team had chosen each other. One was Soul. The other was Country. Reba helped them meet in the middle with the song “Fool Around And Fell In Love”. It was both of their genres in a really special way. This and Nick helping them out with their falsettos helped both of them shine.

Though the end was a little shaky for Daron during rehearsals. He was used to toning it down. He now needed amp it up. He loved that Nick asked him to get creative. He got to enjoy himself and stay true to himself. This battle on the other hand had a clear winner. Aaron’s gritty voice won him that battle and Reba thought the same. Tonight was the end of Daron’s journey. Just not the end of his journey with music. There’s nothing that will stop that man from singing. They were followed by Team Micheal.

Michael’s advisor was Kelsea Ballerini. She was recently on as a coach. Now, she was advising Michael on his team. His first battle proved to be the hardest because his two four chair turns ended up with each other. They didn’t pick anyone. It was everyone else that picked each other and they somehow ended up together. They both have roots in R&B. Trinity lean towards Pop. Jazz leaned towards Soul. The two women also got along and that was going to be the toughest part of this battle because there has to be a winner.

Michael didn’t want to lose a four chair turn. Both of them were too good to lose. Trinity’s voice was effortless. Jazz’s voice had grit. Michael gave them “Virtual Insanity”. He’s been wanting to use the song for a while now and this battle was the first time he felt they could do the song worthy. Which they did. The other judges all said they have a Steal left and they wanted one of them. Michael struggled with picking a winner. He ultimately chose Jazz. He then used his Save to try and keep Trinity.

Kenny was so busy flirting that he didn’t realize he arranged the song wrong with his voice. They asked him to flip it and his voice finally matched his energy. Not that Kanard phoned it in. He was just as talented. He also has the fire in him because this man has come back more times than anyone else this season. They put on such a great performance. Kenny singing to Reba also won him Snoop’s admiration because he grew in confidence. If he could do that after one week, Snoop couldn’t wait to see him later on.

Kanard was eliminated tonight. Only this Kanard. He has proven that he can and will come back if he interested. He never gave up. No one was going to give up on him. Team Michael was up next. He got Austin and Rob as his second battle. They were both Country artists. This wasn’t the hardest pairing. They matched each other in every way. They became friends. Rob was another comeback kid. He got no turns in a previous seasons and this season Michael used his Block so that he could get him over Reba.

Robs leans towards modern Country. Austin leans more towards traditional Country. They were the only Country contestants on Michael’s team and so Kelsea being their advisor was amazing. She got them in a way that no one did. She also understood that last home stretch fell apart during rehearsal. She helped them build something stronger. Everyone wanted them to have a strong finish. Michael gave them the song “Honey Bee”. It matched them. It allowed them both to shine and there was still a clear winner. Robb wasn’t just too hard to pass up.

Austin was out. Until he wasn’t. Reba used her Steal to get him. He will make a great addition to his team and he might find himself in another duet with Rob again. Who knows what the future will hold

THE END!
