In tonight’s Watson episode, Dr. John Watson was dating again. It took him some time to get over his ex-wife. Only Mary still holds a place in his heart. Mary called him while he was out on a date with someone else and he dropped everything when he heard that her mother was sick. It wasn’t a stroke.
She showed signs of respiratory distress. It just wasn’t matching anything they’ve seen before. Watson called in everyone for this one. They even got help from Shinwell. Mary’s mother is Elizabeth Morstan. Mary thought her mother was completely health before this and sadly that wasn’t true. Her mom wasn’t well. She hasn’t been for a while.
Elizabeth was experiencing moderate to severe dementia. She was forgetting a lot. She forgot that she makes her own bitter almond extract or how much she puts in a secret family recipe.
She kept taking a taste test. She accidentally gave herself cyanide poisoning. She was treated for it once they found out what it was. It then left the question of what caused the dementia. The dementia was spreading quicker than it normally does. It wasn’t even a slow progress because Mary sees her mother twice a week.
Elizabeth was fine a month ago. She began experiencing worsening symptoms in two weeks. In a few days, she forgot Watson. She eventually came to forget Mary was her daughter.
She thought she was twenty-five. She thought she was still pregnant with Mary. Her physical symptoms was motor dysfunction at first. Something Watson didn’t notice at first until she wrote out baby names for the child she thought was still in her stomach. She genuinely thought it would be a boy. Mary couldn’t be in the same room as her mom because it just made her too sad.
Watson took over her care. He also found himself handling Mary as well. His new girlfriend was very understanding. She told him that he always put others before himself and maybe he needs to figure out what’s best for him. Watson couldn’t give up on Elizabeth. He’s known for a long time.
Elizabeth still considered him a son-in-law. She loves him. Or the part that remembers him loves him. His first priority was saving Elizabeth. The next part will be figuring out what he wants because even his doctors grow restless.
Watson wasn’t just dating again. He turned down lectures. He turned down conferences. He even went as far as turning down grants. He’s stopped the clinic. His doctors didn’t want to be plain old doctors at a regional hospital. They wanted to be more. They also didn’t want to go looking for a new neurologist. Yes, the last one walked the fine line between good and evil. She still left big shoes to fill and they weren’t sure they could do it because Watson didn’t just want brilliant. He wanted unusual. He wants mysteries.
His current doctors all still have them. Shinwell still has them. It’s why they’re all still there. Watson loved a mystery. Its what drew him to these people. Its what kept him interested. The team ran into Ingrid while they were interviewing her potential replacement. She got a job in the area. Her sister was still getting treatment at U Hop. Or at least that’s what she told the team when she saw them. She seemed good. She seemed better. She was going to group therapy and she was finally getting treated for having anti-social personality disorder.
She couldn’t get treatment at her own hospital. She was going to U Hop because it was nearby. She was working on herself and she was doing the best to stop her life from repeatedly blowing up. She just didn’t tell anyone she’s seeking treatment. They still thought she looked good. Shinwell has been given a third chance. Why couldn’t she? There wasn’t a single one that was without sin last year and so Watson’s team put two files on his desk for Ingrid. One was a nice woman with no mystery. The other was Ingrid.
Watson might be curious to get Ingrid back. He loved a mystery and he ended up solving Elizabeth’s. She didn’t have dementia. She had a failing liver. She wasn’t a drinker. It happened from her type two diabetes. It would take too long for her to be on the donor’s list. Mary got herself tested to see if she could be a living donor. The results came back that it was too much of a risk. Mary wasn’t particularly in the best health for it and Watson told her that he couldn’t risk losing them both by forcing a procedure that might not work anyways.
Watson instead got creative. He remembered that Elizabeth thought she was pregnant at twenty-five. There was just one issue. She had Mary at twenty-nine. Elizabeth had gotten pregnant before she was married and neither she nor her future husband were in the best position to care for a child. They put him up for adoption. Elizabeth made sure he got the name she chose. She also kept a close eye on him. He owns a bakery nearby. Elizabeth visited it everyday just to see her son. She never told him who she was and so he was surprised when Watson brought Mary to his bakery.
Miles was the only one who could be a possible match for her mother. He simply never knew Elizabeth was his bio mother. This plus him having his own family made him not want to donate. It took him seeing Elizabeth for him to realize she was the uplifting regular. The one that convinced him to stay in business when he nearly gave up. She helped turn around his bakery. She also gave him life. He decided to replay that and he thankfully was a much better match than Mary was. After a successful surgery, Miles got to introduce his family to Elizabeth and Mary both.
And it showed Watson what he wants. Why he gave up all those things he used to chase? He wanted to focus on being happy and finding love again. He gave it up once for Holmes. Now, Holmes returned from the dead to steal food from his refrigerator tonight. Odds are he’s going to mayhem like he always does.
THE END!
