In tonight’s Chicago PD episode, Detective Imani finally got to meet her sister again on tonight’s episode. It’s unfortunate that Shari doesn’t remember her.
She doesn’t remembered being kidnapped or anything before her kidnapping. Her kidnapper was a man currently known as Russ Kirby. He brainwashed Shari.
He convinced her that he was all she had in the world. It’s how he was able to keep tabs on her. Shari wasn’t a scared six year old anymore. She was now an adult woman. She thought she was staying with Kirby by choice. She was that badly brainwashed.
When the detective told her that DNA proves their sisters, Shari refused to believe it. She also asked her not to call her Shari. It’s not her name. Not anymore.
She goes by different aliases because she’s been on the run for most of her life with Kirby. She never wondered why. She let him be her adoptive father before he became her husband. She said their love was different. She added that strangers wouldn’t understand it. She kept trying to justify it and Imani couldn’t take it listening to her rewrite their history.
If Kirby really loved her, she would never have become his wife after being his daughter. He would never have pimped her out in a parking lot of a strip club. The same club she worked in because he demanded it. Its one thing to put her in school and its another to make her pay for it as well as some extra with her body.
Shari doesn’t seem to understand that. She was still talking about Kirby as if he was her savior. She had a minor moment in which she told Imani that Kirby would probably be with his friend Jojo.
She didn’t have Jojo’s last name or address. She just knew he lived by the river. She said Kirby often goes there without her. Imani feed the intel to her team and they later busted through Jojo’s front door.
The man was a drug dealer. He had drugs all over his home. He even had clients still there. He just didn’t harbor Kirby. They haven’t spoken in months. Kirby said they could ask his neighbors. He had a falling out with the guy. He doesn’t want him coming around anymore. This lead was a dead end.
Right away Voight thought Shari lied to them. He thought she was siding with captor and trying to protect him. Imani defended her sister. She said that Shari didn’t knowingly lie to them.
She thought that maybe Shari was simply confused. Kirby probably lied to her so many times that she got turned around. It turns out that Kirby always demanded to be paid twice by the clients for his girls. He would claim to throw in a freebie to get drugs from Jojo. Then he’d reveal it wasn’t free after all and demand blackmail money or he’d report them to the cops.
He ticked off a lot of johns that way. Some felt that Shari was in on it. They felt she had to be so Voight followed his gut. He privately had Kirby’s victim tested to see if Shari’s DNA was also on her.
He suspected Shari helped killed her friend, Laura Kerr. For Kirby. Laura was trying to get the girl she knew as Sable as far away from the guy as she could. It’s why they started ripping off johns on their own. They were hoping to save up money to escape. Now, Voight didn’t tell Imani his theory. He instead asked her to come to the station with Shari.
Imani said she’d do it after she reacquainted Shari with her stuff. There were pictures, newspaper clippings, and Imani herself to explain everything. Their parents gave up their jobs to go on the road with Imani to look for Shari. They traveled all around the country. They followed wherever they had gotten leads. Tampa, St, Louis, and even Chicago.
Their parents passed away without ever once giving up hope. It was just the two of them now. Shari seemed like she was finally starting to believe her. And its why Imani didn’t question it when she said she knew where Kirby would go.
All that she asked was that Imani go alone. Its was Shari’s one supposed guarantee that Kirby wouldn’t be killed by the cops. Imani followed through by promising to go alone. She walked right into a trap. Kirby knocked her out. Shari took her gun. Imani tried to convince Shari not to trust Kirby or go with him.
Shari never believed Imani was telling the truth. She played her and Kirby demanded she’d prove her loyalty by killing Imani. Shari was going to do it too. Like she did with her friend Laura.
Imani fought back. She kept them from killing her long enough for her team to find them. Kirby tried to run off with Shari and Voight stopped him. Voight killed him.
He did it right in front of Shari so she tried to kill herself later on. She slashed her wrists. Imani rushed her to the hospital. Shari survived, but she still thought of herself as his. She was truly broken. And Imani didn’t know how to fix it or stop a potential murder charge coming down for Shari.
