In tonight’s Law & Orders SVU episode, Captain Curry won the annual boxing match between the NYPD and FDNY. Even Chief Tynan showed up for it. Tynan showed up with a job offer and it was undetermined at first if Curry heard her out or not. There was that lot that happened in the meantime.
The squad was later called to the hotel. There had been a report of a sexual assault. The hotel wanted to be discreet because they were throwing RomeoCon and Benson didn’t care about that. She cared that there’s no elevator cameras. Or cameras on the hotel floor because of the hotel’s discretion came at the cost of people’s safety.
The woman who reported the crime is Leyla Hartman. She was also attending RomeoCon. Romeo was a ballet prodigy. He blew up big on social media and now women in their forties to fifties were spending huge amounts of money to meet him. Plus, there were also the private lessons.
Romeo Martin mind you was sixteen. The victim in this case was much older than him. She also wasn’t the only one claiming to be a victim. She said she bought the VIP package for RomeoCon. Romeo was very nice to her.
Romeo allegedly told her that he didn’t want to dance anymore. They went up to his room to talk to his mom/manager and that’s when he became a different person.
He assaulted her. He left and she got away. Leyla left a few things out. Like how his mom was dead in the room where the assault allegedly took place. There was a blood trail from that hotel room to Romeo’s room. Romeo seemed to be in shock when they broke down his door. He asked Detective Bruno to help him. Bruno did some digging.
Bruno suspected that Diane Martin the mother might’ve been pimping out her son. These women buying the VIP packages often implied they slept with him.
They also talked about him like a piece of a meat. Diane did nothing to shut this down. She collected over six hundred grand from these women as donations. It was supposed to be for Romeo’s college fund and it was instead put into the mother’s account. Now, she’s dead. Bruno saw something in Romeo that made him feel like Leyla’s story wasn’t accurate.
Bruno later questioned Romeo. Romeo’s father died six years ago. He was officially an orphan. He seemed pretty shaken up so Bruno got his side of the story. Romeo said these VIP events always take a turn. The women start getting drunk. They make comments. They become sexual.
It usually just stops at comments because his mother doesn’t let it go further. She also used to tell him to ignore it no matter how he felt about the matter. He was weirded out by these things. He was just a kid. He knew it was wrong even as his mother tried to convince him differently.
Romeo claimed that Leyla followed him onto the elevator. She pushed her way into his room. She sexually assaulted him and she’s the one that brought the condom. Romeo’s mother then came in. She freaked out and that’s when Leyla killed her. Leyla said they could be together now.
Romeo was so terrified that he escaped through a window. He tried several windows to see which one was open and then hid in that room. That’s where they found him. Romeo’s story held up. Leyla’s story fell apart.
Leyla refused a rape kit. The murder weapon was found in her room with her fingerprints on it. She put the used condom with Romeo’s specimen in her fridge. She probably planned on using it to get pregnant for all they knew. It also turned out that Leyla was banned from the fan group by Romeo’s mother.
When she was arrested for the assault as well as the murder, she said she had to do it. She claimed she was saving him. The woman was sick. Her earlier story was all a lie. The truth is that she’s a predator obsessed with a child.
Leyla even hired a sleazy lawyer that SVU was familiar with, Dan Olin. The lawyer wanted to try the case in the court of public opinion. He’s claiming that Leyla was the victim and that Romeo was a predator. Chief Tynan had also taken an interest in this case. She spoke with the detective from homicide that was handling the murder angle.
He knew she was fishing. He warned Benson about it. He said that Tynan made a case against Jimmy Griffin go away back in 2001. If Benson needed ammo, she could use it. The shooting back then wasn’t as kosher as everyone thought.
Curry had turned down Tynan’s offer. Whatever it may have been. She said she didn’t want to a pawn in someone else’s game and that she hadn’t told Benson about the offer when Tynan asked if Benson pushed her into that decision. Curry knows a fight is brewing. She doesn’t want to get caught in the middle.
Back at trial, Olin used every dirty trick in the book. He did all of that and still lost because Leyla was nuts. She accused the detectives of planting evidence. She accused her now ex-husband of bribing the judge so that he got custody.
Everyone was out to get her in her mind, but it was her ex-husband’s testimony that sunk her. She left a voicemail for him threatening to accuse him of rape if he crossed her and so she was truly evil.
She was found guilty. She was going to spend her days in prison where the others inmates will offer a nice welcome.
And Curry told Benson about the job offer. She mentioned she turned it down and now Tynan was getting her reassigned. Curry didn’t think there was anything Benson could do. Benson remembered she still had one card up her sleeve.
THE END!
