In tonight’s Law & Order SVU episode, Detective Joe Velasco reentered the picture on tonight’s episode. He went to go work a joint operation with the DEA. He ended up running into his old friends at Manhattan SVU after his undercover job was revealed to be “assisting” in human trafficking. He undercover in a cartel. The cartel has been known to move drugs.
Only lately they upgraded to young women. Velasco was collecting evidence when SVU swooped in and nearly blew his cover. They got a tip from Anti-Crime about girls being moved. It turns out the tip came from Velasco himself.
Velasco was investigating the Los Sin Fe Cartel. They started out in Mexico. They’ve since moved to the West Coast of the United States. Now, they were branching to the East Coast because the leader of Los Sin Fe was notoriously ambitious.
He went by Chiquito. His real name is Alejandro Guvara. He left his cousin in charge in spite of having a different reputation of being unreliable. Cousin Arturo Anguilar got a hit to the head from a crowbar and he hasn’t been right since. He was a suspect in over twelve murders.
Arturo was only kept around because he was family. He may be crazy, but he was a useful sort of crazy. He made a great enforcer. He kept everyone frightened enough to stay in line.
Velasco reminded everyone of that while he was locked up. SVU maintained his cover. He was still good with the cartel. He wasn’t as good with the DEA. Velasco called in the tip after his handler told him not to. Velasco didn’t trust her and she doesn’t trust him. Velasco hasn’t been reporting as he usually does. He’s been withdrawn. She thinks he’s keeping things from her.
DEA Agent Maggie Webber came to Captain Benson because she knew what Velasco did. She wanted to keep him safe. It was him that was making that hard. She felt bad about the girls being trafficked.
She truly does. She sent it up the chain of command and the higher ups thought it more important to bring down the cartel than to stop one shipment of girls and women. They wanted something bigger against Chiquito. Webber disagreed with that idea. She wanted to protect those at risk and she felt that Velasco was one of them as well.
Captain Beson also got the feeling that Velasco was holding back on her. She tried to warn him not to cross any lines. She even informed Finn about it because she knew Finn could be counted on. Finn followed Velasco. He found out what he was keeping secret. Velasco was sleeping with Arturo’s girl.
They both got jumped into the life at a young age. Velasco got out. He came to the United States. He became a detective. His girlfriend hadn’t been so lucky. She was stuck with Arturo and she had no way out.
Velasco promised her that he could get her out. He later explained to Finn that that he began sleeping with the woman as a means of getting information.
Then they opened up about their lives. They realized how much they have in common. They fell in love. Velasco didn’t want out until he could get her out of the life. Finn told him not to lose sight of the job. He didn’t care so much about the messiness. It was the fact that it was putting Velasco at risk that he cared about. Velasco gave the cops a tip about the other shipment of girls being moved.
It proved to be a play. Arturo knew he had a rat. He decided to test his men and Velasco failed that test. The tip was never real. His cousin ordered that the girls be killed because he thought they were too much of a reliability.
Arturo only pretended to move the girls. He was flushing out the rat when his girlfriend revealed Velasco had been with her. She pretended he acted as a bodyguard. The truth is that they’ve been sleeping together and he used her phone to inform the cops about the real location on where the girls are.
Eliana didn’t know he was the rat until that very moment he used her cell. He gave her his keys. He told her to escape through the back. She didn’t make it far before Arturo began looking for her.
He found her before she got to the car. He thought she was the rat. He was going to kill her when Velasco revealed he was a cop. Both Velasco and Eliana tried to fight Arturo off. He still managed to shoot the both of them before he got run down in a car driven by Finn. Arturo was later arrested. Eliana was going into Witness Protection.
But Velasco might lose his career for getting too close to a suspect.
