Regina primps as her doorbell rings. No one is there but there is a basket full to the brim with green apples. She looks back and sees her sister sitting in her house. Zelena says it’s a gift from sister to sister. She says red apples are too sweet and that people like things sharper. Regina says green ones are just bitter and asks why she’s there. Zelena says she wanted to make sure she was all right after their showdown.

Regina tells her she’s fine and asks how she is. Zelena tells her that her house is nice and that she doesn’t appreciate what she has. Regina asks if her superpower is envy and Zelena says it’s the same as ambition. Zelena says her curse was just a form of running away and that she has never taken risks or worked for her happiness. She says it’s a waste and no surprise she was a disappointment to Cora. Regina reminds her that Zelena was the one who was given away and Z says she has no idea what really happened. Z says she’s there to make sure that Regina was there so the Dark One could take her heart. Regina throws a knife at her but she’s gone in a puff of smoke.

Robin faces off with Gold who tells him to turn over the heart. He tells Robin he doesn’t want to do it but can’t stop himself. Robin’s son comes to him and he sinks him in mud. Robin shoots the arrow and then Gold changes the arrow to point at his son and Robin caves and hands over the pouch with the heart in it. Gold can hear it beating and he thanks him and tells him he’s sorry. The arrow stops just short of his son and Robin goes to him and holds him.

Regina comes upon them and asks what happened. He tells her he’s sorry, but it’s gone. She asks if anyone was hurt and he says no. He tells her he let her down and she tells him that nothing is worth the loss of a child. She explains that the problem is that Zelena has her heart and that she’s still alive which means her sister wants it for a spell or something worse. Regina vows to stop her.

At Gold’s shop, Regina rifles through everything calling it useless crap. Belle comes in and Regina explains that her sister can’t control her with it because she protected it, but she has to stop her from whatever she wants to use it for. She asks Belle to help her and she reminds her that Regina has tortured her for decades and she has no reason to help her. Regina admits to doing all of those things and reminds her that Zelena is puppet mastering Gold. She apologizes sincerely for what she did to Belle in the past and she agrees to help her.

Belle tells her she’s been matching the ingredients to known spells and needs to know what’s special about Regina’s heart to figure out what she’s working on. Regina asks for the two sided candle Snow used to kill Cora. Belle hands it over and Regina says it isn’t about how her mother died, but how she lived.

We see a young Cora working in a tavern when she is jostled into a handsome man who tells her to take a seat. He says he’s been watching her all week and says she moves like a lady and she said she was told to act like what she wants to be – which is better than a miller’s daughter. He says he has to leave and then accidentally reveals that he’s Prince Jonathon. He says she puts him in his place unlike other women who know who he is.

He grabs a piece of straw and makes a ring and tells her he will turn the ring into gold in two weeks when he comes back to take her to the castle as Princess Cora. He asks her to marry him and she says yes. He kisses her hand and tells her the next two weeks will be torture. He tells her to meet him at the crossroads in two weeks. He says he has to leave in the morning but she offers to keep him company for the night since they are essentially married and they go off together.

Back in the present, Hook has one of the green apples when Emma comes in and David tells Emma to tell her mother not to name the child Leopold. Regina comes in and says she has special tea but tells them not to drink it – it’s poison for a spell to summon her mother. She tells them that Zelena has her heart and told her this whole thing is about her mother so they need to talk to Cora.

Zelena is thrilled with her sister’s heart. She holds it in her hands when one of her flying monkeys shows up. She tells him she knows it’s battered but says that’s the point. She locks it in a trunk and then pulls out a handsome suit and says – this will do perfectly. She tells her monkey not to be jealous. She takes it to Gold and tells him to suit up. She says she just needs Gold’s lovely brains and says they need to celebrate. He tells her he’s not a doll and she tells him she can use the knife or he can come willingly. She’s waiting on the baby for some reason to complete her insane plan. She tells him to choose wisely how he spends his last hours.

Regina says you need the murder weapon and the murderer to talk to the dead which makes it complicated even though it’s a simple plan. With the candle and Snow there, they have what they need. They take hands and she tells them all to think of Cora. They do and the candle flares up as the fire goes out. A portal opens above them and they all look up. Regina calls out to her mother and asks for a sign. She tells her not to ignore her and pleads with her to come to them and says she owes her.

The portal closes and Regina looks devastated. She blows out the candle and says it worked but Cora didn’t come so she doesn’t want to talk to her and wants to keep her secrets in the past. We see young Cora waiting at the crossroads at the appointed deadline, but no prince comes. She unties her little straw ring and lets it blow away in the chill and snowy wind. She walks back home alone.

Later, she sees Jonathon and says it’s been two months. She asks what happened and he tells her she’s stubborn. She looks at him and his grubby boots and realizes he’s the gardener. She tells him he lied to her and took her heart and virtue. He tells her she forced her virginity onto him when she thought he was a prince. He calls her a harlot and she tells him she’s pregnant. She threatens to tell the prince what he’s done and he says there is no Prince Jonathon. She says there is a prince of some name and she calls for the guards. He knocks her to the ground and takes off.

A man approaches and asks if she’s okay and she says it was a bandit who took everything she had. He holds out his hand and says he can help her. He introduces himself as Prince Leopold. He helps her up and she thanks him.

Now, Regina tells Emma to be sure she’s ready for what’s coming and Snow stays behind to talk to Regina who says she’s in no mood for a heart to heart. Snow reminds her that’s not physically possible right now. We see a door in her house become outlined in blue and then disappear like a portal closing. Hmm…

Young Cora walks with Leopold and tells him stories about her childhood in the village. He tells her she’s wonderful and cold and she says it’s chilly, but she’s okay. He says he would build a fire for her, but doesn’t know how. She tells him she does and takes his knife and builds them a fire. He tells her that he will be king, but wants to be a man of the people but can’t do things that most of his people can. She shows him how to blow softly on a bit of straw to start the flames and explains you need air.

Leopold tells her he has to marry soon and produce an heir of his own. She asks if he has anyone in mind and he says Princess Eva from the northern kingdom and says they’ve been engaged since her birth. He’s never met her but will meet her tonight. He says she’s not a choice that he has made and she asks what’s the use of power if you can’t choose who you can marry.

Snow apologizes to Regina for murdering her mother. She says she doesn’t think about it lightly and thinks about it everyday and Regina tells her she does too. Regina says she remembers that her mother killed Snow’s mother, so it’s complicated. Snow thanks her and says she knows she had things left unsaid to her mother. Regina says her mother walled off a lot of her life from her and she is upset because she never knew about her sister and wonders why her mother gave her up and made them strangers from each other.

They hear a noise upstairs and go to investigate. Behind a door is a rattling noise and Regina says there’s nothing in that room. They open it and see a ghostly spinning wheel and a young ghostly version of her mother. Emma focuses on a cup of hot chocolate and then asks Hook if he wants to see something. She magics his hook off his hand and onto a lamp. He’s not amused. Belle comes running in and says she found out Zelena’s plan. She says they have to let the others know right away.

Gold comes up to the farmhouse in the suit and Zelena compliments him and says a woman should dress him more often. He asks what she’s up to and she tells him she knows he’s dying to know why she needed a heart, courage, brain and that particular baby. She serves him dinner and tells him her secret plan will reunite him with his long-lost son.

He says his son is dead and she tells him she’s not being cruel – that Neil is waiting on him. He asks where and she says not where, but when. He tells her that time travel spells never work and she says laws only exist until they’re broken by someone superior. She tells him once the baby is born she’s going back to get the life she deserves and that he can come with her. He’s on board now.

Regina tells Snow this isn’t right and says the spell was only to open a limited portal to talk. Snow thinks it’s her presence. Cora’s ghost comes for Snow but Regina steps in front of her and stops her and demands she tell her why she gave up Zelena. Cora shoves Regina aside and goes after Snow. Regina magics them into her library but Cora comes through the wall. Regina blasts some magic at her and tells Snow she can hold her off, but not for long.

Young Cora sits in the gazebo dressed in finery when the rogue gardener shows up, grabs her hand and admires her ring and says it did turn into gold after all. She asks him how he dared show his face again. He says he had to come see if the commoner that said yes to him several times in one night was the one that said yes to Leopold. She says she’ll be princess in two days and he will kiss her feet.

The man asks if Leopold knows about the baby and she asks what he wants – gold and jewels. He says yes – as much of it as she can get to buy his silence. She agrees and tells him to leave. He goes. But Princess Eva is nearby and overhears the exchange. She sends her maid away quietly and looks thoughtful. For those who don’t recall, Eva and Leopold are Snow’s parents!

Cora is struggling to break free and Snow begs for her forgiveness. Regina tells her to save her breath because her mother is not like hers and doesn’t forgive. Regina pushes her back and demands to know what she did to Zelena. Cora’s spirit shoves her aside then dives into Snow. Snow sees a flash of all her memories.

Leopold finds Cora in the great hall and asks why she’s there. She asks what is wrong and he says word has spread that she’s with child. She tells him she’s sorry and that it’s a lie. He tells her that he pledged to marry her and will keep his word as long as he knows he can trust her. She tells him there is no baby, only her love for him but then Eva comes in and says she doesn’t love him.

Cora asks why she’s there and Eva says she overheard her with her lover in the garden. Cora says the man was a thief and she sent him away. She says she’s jealous and will say anything so she can marry Leopold instead of her and Eva tells him to check her pockets. He does and finds things she’d stolen to pay off the gardener. Leopold asks Eva to help him break the word to the king and she tells him she will be a worthy wife who will give him a child that is pure as snow and worthy of him. Cora is hauled away.

Regina fights to pull her mother out of Snow and forces her back up into the portal. Emma and David come in and ask what it was. Snow says she saw it and is murmuring her father Leopold’s name and says Cora was trying to communicate. Emma says they need a doctor but Regina wants her to talk now. Belle is there and tells them Zelena is working a time travel spell. Regina says no one has ever been able to do that but Belle says the ingredients she’d gathered are a time travel spell.

Snow says that her mother Eva told the secret and that forced Cora to give up Zelena. Snow thinks that Zelena will go back and kill Eva which means that Henry, Emma and Regina will likely all not be born. David says their baby is the last key to the spell and without it, she’s stuck. He rubs his wife’s belly and says they still have time, just not much of it.

We see young Cora in labor giving birth to Zelena. She takes the child and places her in a basket and ties it with a green ribbon. She tells her daughter that life is cruel and full of betrayal and that she has to give her away so that Cora herself can have her best chance to be more than a miller’s daughter. Baby Z cries as a green twister lifts her and takes her away.

Gold thanks Zelena and tells her that he wronged her and hurt them both. She says soon history will be wiped clean and those mistakes won’t matter. They toast to it and he says he has to make amends. He strokes her face and kisses her neck. She stands and he presses himself into her. He strokes her and kisses her and then goes for the knife but it’s strapped to her leg and she had it protected with magic. She tells him he just squandered his only chance to have his son. He tells her Neil gave his life to stop her and the only way he can repay that sacrifice is to kill her. She holds out the knife, calls him dog and orders him back to his cage. She’s very upset that he tried to play her.

Snow comes in and Regina asks if she should be on bed rest. She sits and asks Regina if she wants to talk. Regina says she still has a less damaging relationship with Cora than she does and Snow says their history is even more complicated than they thought. Regina tells her she’s sorry that Snow how to find out that Eva had that kind of darkness in her. Regina says if she had known that, she would have spent less time trying to kill Snow.

Snow says they don’t have to dwell on the past anymore and they can focus on the future and stopping Zelena. Snow tells Regina that she has seen how hard she fights against the darkness every day and that one day her heart will find its way to the light. Snow takes her hand and tells Regina that nothing should hold her back because she knows how deeply she can feel things. Regina comes to see Robin who apologizes for losing her heart. She kisses him and then he looks at her then returns the kiss with passion.
