Resurrection RECAP 3/16/14: Season 1 Episode 2 “Unearth”

Tonight on ABC the brand new show Resurrection returns for a second episode called, “Unearth”. In it Bellamy receives help in his investigation from Maggie and digs up secrets from the past with his push to have Jacob’s tomb exhumed; at the same time, Pastor Tom reaches out to his childhood friend Jacob; and the Richards adjust to the return of Caleb, who claims he has no memory of his death. Did you watch last week’s episode? If not you can get caught up with out detailed recap, right here

The very first episode introduced us to the people of Arcadia, Missouri whose lives were forever changed when their deceased loved ones suddenly started to reappear. An 8-year-old American boy (Landon Gimenez) woke up alone in a rice paddy in a rural Chinese province with no idea how he got there.

Details started to emerge when the boy, who calls himself Jacob, recalled that his hometown is Arcadia, and an Immigration agent, J. Martin Bellamy (Omar Epps), took him there. The home he claimed as his own is occupied by a 60-year-old couple, Henry (Kurtwood Smith) and Lucille Langston (Frances Fisher), who lost their son, Jacob, more than 30 years ago.

On tonight’s episode The Langstons, especially Sheriff Fred, are forced to confront secrets from their past they’d rather leave buried when Bellamy pushes to have Jacob’s tomb exhumed. Maggie agrees to help Bellamy in his investigation, and Pastor Tom reaches out to Jacob, his childhood friend. The Richards family adjusts to Caleb’s return, the second for Arcadia. But unlike Jacob, Caleb claims he has no memory of his death.

“Resurrection” stars Omar Epps as J. Martin Bellamy, Frances Fisher as Lucille Langston, Matt Craven as Fred Langston, Devin Kelley as Maggie Langston, Mark Hildreth as Pastor Tom Hale, Samaire Armstrong as Elaine Richards, Sam Hazeldine as Caleb Richards, Landon Gimenez as Jacob and Kurtwood Smith as Henry Langston.

At the cemetery, Jacob walks touching headstones. He sees a granite mother and child and then hears a whistle. He see a man walking by in a hoodie whistling to him. They look each other in the eye and then he looks down and sees his hand turning to ash. He wakes up terrified. It was a bad dream, but his mother is there to comfort him.

Elaine asks her dad if it’s really him. Maggie interrupts and says that they need to meet Marty. He asks Caleb if he knows what he’s been through and he says it’s like amnesia – the last thing he remembers was blacking out in his truck. He woke up three days ago in Portland. They tell him he died of a heart attack. Elaine confirms it and says that he was found in the woods by his hunting shack and he says it’s ridiculous because he’s right there. He holds his head and says it’s aching. He asks if they can talk later and Maggie asks her to bring him to her office tomorrow for a check-up.

Outside, Marty asks Maggie if there’s any chance the body wasn’t Caleb. She tells him she saw his body at the funeral before it was cremated and he was 100% dead. Marty wonders why Jacob remembers dying and Caleb doesn’t. Ray comes out and tells them that the man in their house is not his father. He is insistent.

At the Langstons, Jacob has a shower and his mom towels his hair. Henry peeks in but then walks on. Jacob wants to put on his red shirt but his Mom wants him to wear something else. He asks where all his things are from his room and she tells him to wait there. She goes and pulls out a box of things she kept, including some of his clothes. She pulls out a blue bunny from the box and looks at it with tears in her eyes. Jacob is at the door and calls her name. She closes the box and tells him they’re going shopping.

Marty calls and tells Toni he needs to stay and investigate. He says they need to keep this quiet because people will want to test the kid and do bad stuff. He says they need to keep it from turning into a freak show.

Maggie comes to see her Dad Fred and brings him coffee. She says she wanted to check on him and asks if he’s okay about what they learned about her Mom. She says she talked to Jacob and he says she can’t listen to a child that can’t be who he says he is. He tells her not to let people fill her head with stories about her mother. She tells him Jacob is not the only one and tells him Caleb Richards is back as well.

Marty is waiting for Maggie at her office and he says he came to talk to her not to check on Caleb. He asks her if he can ask her about her friends, family and the town. He follows her into her office and tells her there is no way to test Caleb’s ashes from the urn. He says that Jacob’s DNA could be tested. He wants to go to Jacob’s tomb to see if there’s anything there. He says it would give them some information to go on. She sighs and he asks her what’s wrong. She tells him that her mother is in the tomb with Jacob.

Marty says he doesn’t need their permission but hoped she would help him ask them out of respect. She agrees to help.

Lucille puts Jacob in new clothes and sends him out to play with the other kids. He runs around like normal but then the other parents start talking. They begin calling their kids in one by one until no one is left to play with him. Lucille stares at Jacob alone in the field, concerned as he watches the kids all around him walk away.

Elaine watches her Dad scarf down food as she looks at his urn. He makes a joke and tells her he’s not in there and is pretty hungry for a dead man. She tells him she’s glad he’s there and they have a lot to catch up on. He tells her he knows he wasn’t the greatest father but says since he’s got a second chance he has to take it full-on and say she want to make it count. He takes her hand. She smiles and tells him she never thought she would hear those words.

Maggie and Marty tell the Langstons about Caleb and tell them they want to test Jacob’s remains from his tomb. Henry says he won’t let them desecrate the family tomb. Marty says they need answers. Henry is angry and stalks off. Maggie tells Lucille she’s sorry and Lucille says if they need to do it, to go ahead. She asks Marty if he would like to see Jacob. He tells Jacob he beat his Donkey Kong high score and they make small talk.

Jacob says he knows why Marty is there and he asks why. Jacob asks if it’s about the playground and Marty doesn’t know so Jacob refuses to tell him. He says he likes playing alone. Marty asks Lucille about it and he advises her to use a cover story and not tell people that he’s her son come back from the dead. She’s appalled he would want Jacob to lie and he tells her that there’s no telling what people are capable of and it would protect the boy.
[9:45:38 PM] Rachel Rowan: Maggie pulls up across the street from a house and sits in her car. She looks at the photo where Jacob showed them the man that killed her Mother. She finally drives away.

Henry comes to see Fred at the sheriff’s department. They make odd small talk and then Fred tells him he’s been thinking. He says it was Sam Kaplan that must have been sleeping with his wife. Henry closes the door and apologizes for lying to him. Fred says one brother shouldn’t lie to another. He tells Fred he’s not there for a fight and wanted to tell him Marty wants to open the tomb. Fred says all he needs is a court order.

Maggie checks out Caleb and says everything looks pretty good. She checks his eyes and then his heart. She asks what he remembers before he blacked out. There’s a knock at the door and the nurse comes to get him for x-rays before he can answer. Elaine asks if it’s all okay but Maggie tells her the protein in his blood shows that he had a heart attack three days ago. Elaine asks what that means and Maggie says that’s exactly when he says he woke up. She asks Elaine if she thinks they cremated the wrong person and Elaine says it doesn’t matter. She says all she knows is her Dad is back and he’s really trying. Maggie asks doesn’t she want the truth and Elaine says some things are more important.

Marty comes to the courthouse looking for a judge. The receptionist tries to block him and they look up and see him with Fred. Turns out Fred blocked him from getting the tomb opened and he tells Marty he knows he’s a glorified desk jockey. He walks out on him.

Pastor Tom tells Lucille that Marty’s suggestion that she tell people that Jacob is someone else is a wise idea. She pleads with him to talk to Jacob since they were best friends but he makes and excuse and says maybe he can come by later. She allows him to make the excuse. Jacob plays in a pew alone while they chat.

Marty is in his B&B room tossing a ball against the wall and thinking. He calls Toni and asks if she still knows anyone at the Department of Justice.

Elaine looks around the house for Caleb and doesn’t see him. She sees his jacket hanging on the chair and has a flashback to his funeral. She wrote a note to him and tucked it in the pocket of his jacket. She gets teary and reaches into his jacket pocket. When she doesn’t find a note, she’s reassured. Ray comes up on her and startles her and tells her “than man” is up to something. He tells her he’s not their Dad and Elaine says she can’t take one of his theories right now. Caleb comes in with his tool box and says the house is falling apart. He asks if Ray didn’t learn to fix anything besides cars while he was gone. Ray stomps off. Elaine tells her Dad she’s got to go to work and he tells her he’s proud of her. She heads out.

The neighbor’s dog is barking crazily at Caleb as he tosses a shovel into the back of his truck and drives off. Ray stares out the window at him. In the woods, Caleb digs a hole and has a flashback to his heart attack there in the woods. He keeps digging. He gets down to what looks like a body he buried there!

Maggie meets her Dad after work and he slides her a beer. He tells her he was wrong this morning and she has a right to ask about her mother. He says he’ll try to give her some answers. He tells her that her Mom had post partum depression but they didn’t know what it was back then. He says he wasn’t understanding enough and anything her Mom did wrong was his fault, not hers. She admits she never do that. He tells her that Marty got a federal court order to open the tomb and she says she knows and that it’s not as simple as he thinks it is. He tells her she needs to move on and she says that’s their family’s way – to not talk about things. Maggie says all she knew about her mom was that she died a hero saving Jacob and that wasn’t even true.

Marty comes in and Fred asks why he’s there. He tells him he’s destroying the memory of his wife and Marty says he means no disrespect. He tells Fred the past is knocking on his door and he can’t ignore it. Fred brings up Marty’s own past and tells him to explain to Maggie what he did five years ago. Fred tells them to find the decency to do the right thing and stomps out.

Lucille explains to Henry the directions to hook up a video game system and he stops and sighs. He tells her they’re opening Jacob’s tomb tomorrow. He asks if she’s going and she asks him why she would put herself through that. He throws down the wires and says he has no idea what he’s doing. Lucille tells him they’re not trying to hurt anyone but are trying to protect Jacob. He asks which one. He goes upstairs to read.

Tom comes to the door but then doesn’t knock and starts to walk away. Jacob opens the door and tells him he knows now that he’s his friend Tom. Lucille drags Tom in and tells him she needs his help hooking up the video game system they got for Jacob. She asks him to stay for dinner and he agrees to both. Tom sit down to look at it and Jacob reminds him how he was the one who always set up the film projector in Miss Jacinda’s class. Tom says he hasn’t thought about her in years and Jacob says she was his favorite teacher. Lucille comes running in when she hears Jacob and Tom yelling. They’re playing the video game and yelling good naturedly. She smiles in relief.

Maggie sits outside that house again as a truck comes pulling up. She goes to talk to the man who’s bringing in his groceries. She says she needs to ask him one question and asks if he’s her father. He says no. She nods her head and turns to walk away. He tells her he didn’t leave her and says he waited by the river until someone found her. Oh – he didn’t kill her mom – he was trying to save her. Whew… He comes in and tells someone in the house “she found us.” OMG! Is her Mom alive and in his house???

Ray comes into his Dad’s room and touches the bed and looks at his Bible. Caleb come in and asks what he’s doing. Ray says nothing and his Dad says it doesn’t look like nothing. He tells him he’ll stay out of Ray’s room if Ray agrees to stay out of his. Ray leaves and Caleb opens the bible. That’s where he’s got the note Elaine wrote and tucked into his jacket at the funeral.

Jacob plays at the park while Lucille watches when Marty comes to ask how she’s doing. She says she’s just enjoying the day with her son. She tells him that Jacob just wants to be a little boy and she can’t ask him to lie about who he is. She says it’s all he can do and people just have to learn to accept it. Jacob sees Caleb at the fence and walks to him. They chat. Lucille sees him and she and Marty come running over. They ask what he said to him and Jacob says he told him to lie.

At the tomb, Marty delivers the court order to a cop. The groundskeepers open it up. They open the outer gates. Henry is nearby but then walks away. Maggie joins Marty. The men bring out one coffin. He asks if she’s ready and Maggie agrees. They open the coffin and look down into it. She turns slowly to look at Marty.

Caleb comes up to a house with his tool box and he’s whistling. He knocks at the door. He asks the man if everything is gone and the man falls in shock to the floor and begs for help. He demands to know if it’s all gone and then takes a hammer to the guy as he begs for mercy.

THE END!!
