John Aniston Was A Soap Opera Legend

John Aniston was born Yannis Anastassakis on July 24, 1933, in Crete, but his name was changed and Americanized when his family moved to the United States when he was just two years old.

Aniston went on to earn his BA in Theater Arts from Penn State University, but enrolled in the Navy and served his adopted country before starting his acting career, hence Jennifer’s reference to his death on Veteran’s Day.

Aniston appeared on several soaps, including Love of Life and Search For Tomorrow, before landing the role of the villainess Victor Kiriakis in 1985, a role he played to this day.

John was last seen on our Salem screens on Friday, November 10, the day of his death, and will likely be seen more as DAYS tapes months in advance.

Through the years, Aniston took Victor from a ruthless tycoon to a curmudgeon with a soft spot for certain family members.

The love of two good women, Caroline Brady (Peggy McCay) and Maggie Kiriakis (Suzanne Rogers), also made Victor kind at times.

Before Aniston brought Victor to life, he also played a small role on DAYS in the 1970s while also making appearances on episodic TV, including on the primetime hit Kojak.

We send condolences to the Aniston family, daughter Jennifer, son Alexander, and wife Sherry Rooney, during this difficult time.
