Winston was looking for his brother. His brother Wendell managed to con both him and his wife out of thousands of dollars. Each! Wendell claimed he had bad people looking for him because he took out a debt with a loan shark. But there was no need to get the same amount twice from two different people. It didn’t come out until Winston was talking to his wife Maggie and by then Wendell had skipped town. There’s no telling if he was being truthful about being in debt with loan sharks or if he only came to town to con them out of money. Wendell was in the wind. He disappeared after getting the money and Winston doesn’t know where he is.

But he’s looking for him. Winston was looking for his brother and he was tempted to fly out of town during the accreditation council because he was that set on finding Wendell. He was even pushing away his wife while he was at it. Maggie tried to reason with him and Wendell clapped back that she doesn’t know what it was like to grow up with siblings. It’s true. She doesn’t know what it’s like to grow up with siblings. She was an adult when she met Meredith and Amelia. They were sisters now. They just weren’t sisters back then and it wasn’t fair to have that thrown in her face as she tried to reason with her husband.

The money was gone. Maggie acknowledges that they were never going to get it back and so it’s best that they move on. Especially as the hospital was going through a crisis. Not only were they suffering from being on probation with the accreditation council, but they were also experiencing a blood shortage and the hospital actually had to start a blood drive in order to get the blood they needed to remain open. Everyone else was there for the blood drive. Schmitt couldn’t give blood because as a gay man he could only give blood if he hadn’t slept with anyone in the last three months. And so that ruled him out.

Hellmouth was angry that he couldn’t give blood. She was angry that a hospital shortage was still choosing to be discriminating against gay men. Schmitt told her to drop it. He felt he was lucky to still have a job and so he didn’t want to rock the boat. He also wasn’t telling his best friend everything. He seemed to be hiding something from her. It might have to do with Nico. Nico experienced a personal setback after he heard about a hate crime and he was at a low point when Schmitt came by. Schmitt offered to be there for him. It was ultimately very sweet of Schmitt, but Nico didn’t deserve it.

Nico wasn’t a good boyfriend. He’s been at a low point several times now and it’s always Schmitt running to cheer him up. It’s never the other way around. Nico pursued Schmitt once and then never went back after getting shut out. Yet, the number of times that Schmitt has pursued Nico was too many to count. It was always Schmitt being there for Nico and never Nico being there for Schmitt. Their breakup had been a good thing. Schmitt should have just accepted and moved on. Only he loved Nico. Nico was a beautiful hot mess of a man. And still, Schmitt couldn’t stop himself from loving Nico.

The hospital meanwhile was getting a bunch of volunteers to give blood. Amelia volunteered. She gave blood alongside Maggie and they got to talking about Winston. Amelia agreed with Winston that their sisterhood was different than when siblings grow up together. Amelia’s sisters can get under her skin like no one else. It goes all the way back to their childhood. Amelia much prefers her true sisters like Maggie and Meredith over the other lot. The Shepherd lot. Amelia was happier now than she ever was back then and Meredith could say the same. Meredith didn’t grow up with sisters. She didn’t meet any of her sisters until she was an adult.

Meredith grew up alone as well as under the gaze of a tyrant. Her mother Ellis was a horrible woman and Meredith still has nightmares about her. Meredith was thinking of that as she helped Nick with his patient, Cora. Cora has a tumor. The tumor was in such a location that it would be hard to get all of it and so the doctors wanted to buy her time. They couldn’t offer her a cure. But Cora didn’t want a half-finished job. She was taking care of her elderly aunt. This aunt was the woman who practically raised Cora. She was the one who came by after Cora’s mother disappeared with a new boyfriend.

The aunt was the one who made sure Cora ate and bathed, and she would even lie by telling Cora she should just miss a call from her mother. The mother never called. She never checked up on Cora or told her she loved her. The aunt made that all up so that Cora would feel loved. Now, the aunt was sick. She was suffering from dementia and she needed Cora to take care of her. Cora was happy to do it because she felt her aunt has done so much for her that it was only fair she return the favor. Cora needed to get better for her aunt. She couldn’t die on the woman. Meredith heard that and she came up with radical surgery. She and Nick took Cora into the OR.

They removed most of Cora’s internal organs in order to better reach the tumor. They then slowly made the old organs new ones again and so Cora’s surgery was slowly proving to be a success when she started to lose blood. Meredith decided to close her up until they could get more blood. There was supposed to be a delivery of blood from the blood bank and unfortunately, Bailey got a call. The truck carrying blood had gotten into a car accident. Bailey got the call around the same time that she also heard from a man. A man who came to her with a ludicrous story. This man claimed that Owen has been giving drugs to veterans and helping them end their lives.

It was a crazy story. Bailey hoped it was a crazy story. She went running to Owen hoping he would tell her that the story was a lie and instead he told her it was the truth. Owen had been helping people commit suicide. It was against the law. It was considered murder. He has so much to lose and still he did it anyway. Owen had a moment of craziness until Teddy found out. She put a stop to it and the only reason that man came forward is that they refused to hand over life-ending drugs to him so that he could give them to his dying wife. They never met the wife in person. They’ve only video-chatted with her.

They couldn’t just give the husband the drugs without ever meeting the patient. It was unethical. They said as much to the husband and he threatened them. He told them that if he didn’t get what he wanted that he’d report them. They refused. The husband went running to Bailey and now Owen was in trouble. He was in so much trouble that Bailey assigned April Kepner to Trauma. April was visiting town with Jackson and their daughter. They were there to check on Catherine. Catherine was undergoing treatment for cancer. The whole family was visiting because she wanted them to eulogize her so that she could hear it while she was still alive and so it was April’s decision to shut down Trauma.

She had to. There was no blood. There was a patient who was dying of cancer and he was of the same blood as his wife. When she went into labor, Simon told him to give his blood to his wife. He didn’t want her or the baby to die. He gave up his chance of prolonging his life and so once the baby was born – it was brought to Simon. Simon got to meet his son before he passed. His blood ended up going to his wife and it saved her life. Simon was their hero. It was a good way to die and he didn’t regret it for a minute. The blood shortage was what killed Meredith and Nick’s patient. They had rushed into surgery against Richard’s advice and now their patient is dead.

They lost her at the same time that a member of the accreditation council was visiting. This person also found out that Meredith plans on leaving and so they wondered what else was being kept from the council. It was looking bad for the hospital to tell the truth. They were suffering a blood shortage and a physician shortage. The physician thing got worse after Owen and Teddy quit. Bailey was giving them time before she reported them to the authorities. They, therefore, we’re going on the run. They got Amelia to get their children. They packed what they could and they were going on the run as a family. There’s no telling where they’ll go. And they left at the worst time because hearing that they left was enough for the accreditation council to remove their residency program.

The residents will have to go somewhere else.

And before the woman from the accreditation council left, she said that the doctors were too used to each other. They don’t respect each other. They don’t respect the hospital’s hierarchy. They can’t function as they are and that’s why they got shut down. But Amelia apologized to Link for breaking his heart. Richard got home with his wife whose tumor was shrinking. Winston told his wife that he loved her and that he doesn’t regret getting married. Jo told Link that she missed their friendship. They agreed to let the whole sleeping together thing be in the past. And then there was Bailey who chose to quit and so Meredith was named interim chief.

But Kai came back. They missed Amelia and they were willing to work on the relationship. They got back together around the same time that Meredith and Nick realized that maybe what they need right now is space. And Meredith had changed her mind about that, but she doesn’t know if that will be enough to win back Nick.

THE END
