In tonight’s The Rookie episode, Sergeant Tim Bradford has been demoted. He’s been demoted all the way back to patrol. He also broke up with his girlfriend who helped him get the better job on Metro and so it’s only fair that his life was falling apart now that they’re no longer together. Bradford made the move in order to date Officer Chen initially.
He wasn’t breaking any rules by going back now. Still, demotion is a big thing. Sergeant Grey was worried about him and he asked the in-house shrink to follow Bradford on duty. Grey was going to be personally babysitting Chen on patrol. Just in case she goes off after the breakup.
Smitty was running a betting ring about the reasons for the breakup. Some felt Bradford cheated. Others thought Chen was the one to cheat with Aaron. Smitty was running a book on it all.
Chen found out about it. She tried to put a stop to it and it wasn’t helping the rumors. Chen was not herself. She got dumped by Bradford. Her roommate was moving out. She even thought the first call they responded to was a setup because it was a domestic call. The guy had faked his death with his girlfriend so that he could ghost her.
The ex-girlfriend found out he was still alive. She confronted him. They were getting in a huge fight when Chen intervened. Chen spoke woman to woman with the ex. She told her that the revenge fantasies weren’t worth the jail time.
Walk away. Save yourself the trouble. The ex did that and Chen later questioned if it was a setup because things have been awkward at the office with Bradford. Only Grey reminded her that he doesn’t care enough to hire actors. He also added that she’s watching too much reality tv.
The officers all became involved in a missing teenage girl case. The girl was Emma. Emma was babysitting when she left the baby in a playpen and drove off. She did it after she got a text message from her best friend saying “Help”.
Both girls were missing. Their phones weren’t on. Emma would never have left her babysitting duties before. It’s a good thing the nanny cam was on because the mother found her child alone in the house. She rushed home and she reported Emma missing. Officer Nolan took the call with Celina.
Nolan didn’t know it, but babysitting pays well. He was trying for a baby with his wife. They haven’t considered the financial part of it and so he asked the moms he does know about it. Detective Lopez had just fired her nanny that morning. The nanny brought a gun into her house. It was technically in her purse and she does have a permit only Lopez couldn’t trust a woman who does that. Not when she’s paying her eighty grand a year. She was now looking for a new nanny. Nolan was wondering how he was going to afford childcare with his and Bailey’s working hours.
They all started looking for Emma’s friend as well. Olivia would often hang out at the house when Emma was babysitting. It seems that the couple they were babysitting for were problematic.
The Olsens were the perfect couple on paper. They just had a baby. They were both back at work. Matthew Olsen would sometimes work from home when the girls were over at the house and he would always turn off the nanny cams. It’s why his wife never suspected he was abusing the girls under his care.
Matthew did something to Olivia. Olivia begged her friend for help before that could happen. Both girls went missing and Matthew was off the grid. There’s no telling where he is or what he’s doing.
One of the girls managed to call 911. She said she didn’t know where she was. She was crying. The phone call got interrupted before she could say anything else. They traced the call to a nice neighborhood. It was so nice that Celina wondered if she could move there. She was looking for a new place after falling out with her roommate and Nolan suggested she ask Chen about her extra room.
They were patrolling the neighborhood when they came across Olivia. Olivia escaped Matthew. She said she tried to end it with him and he didn’t take it well. He kept saying they could run away together. Olivia said that’s when she contacted Emma. Emma came to her side. Matthew took them both hostage. Olivia said he killed Emma. He was driving erratically and Olivia was afraid he’d kill her too. She jumped out of the car while in motion. She’s pretty banged up.
The helicopter over head was scanning the area. They found the car parked. The police went there while Olivia was taken to the hospital.
They found the body of Matthew Olsen. He’s been dead for over two hours. He couldn’t have killed Emma or threaten Olivia. Olivia was lying about what happened. She escaped from the ambulance before it could take her to the hospital. She has a knife on her. She was considered armed and dangerous. They caught up to her.
It was a standoff. Olivia revealed the true story then. She said that she thought Matthew loved her. She found out she was pregnant. She tried to talk Matthew into leaving his wife and he wasn’t going to.
Matthew never loved her. He was using her. Olivia hit him in anger. She killed him and she called Emma for help, but Emma wanted to call the authorities. Olivia was forced to kill her too. She was a messed up child. Her father was in prison. Her mother didn’t care about an adult man preying on her. What’s going to happen to her baby now? Celina really felt for Olivia. Nolan felt for Matthew’s widow. The poor woman had no idea what her husband was like. She now has to raise a baby on her own.
Celina talked to Chen about possibly being her new roommate. Chen thought it was a great idea. They met up for drinks. Bradford passed his field exam by Dr. London. He also felt he still needed to heal. So, he was going to keep seeing the shrink.
Lopez and Harper also agreed to share a nanny while they look for their own.
