Cameron Mathison Describes His Surreal Sense Of Loss

Recently, General Hospital (GH) stars Cameron Mathison (Drew Cain) and Maurice Benard (Sonny Corinthos) got together on the State of Mind podcast. Cameron tried explaining how jarring the disconnection was when his home burned down in Los Angeles.

Surreal Sense Of Loss

Fans of the ABC show don’t like the character of Drew Cain, but when Cameron tried to find the words to describe his loss, hearts melted. For an actor so good with words, it struck many people as heartbreaking. It’s just a home, and people can rebuild, you might think. However, the loss of everything shook the ABC star to the core.

Speaking with a sympathetic Maurice Benard, he said, “As you know, I am a very positive and resilient guy. This has been really hard.” Struggling for words, GH fans heard him say, “It’s an interesting and hard-to-explain type of loss. Like it’s um it’s very bizarre to explain to people that haven’t been through it.”

Redescribing the loss, Cameron Mathison added, “Everything I own–everything–was gone in my whole life. Childhood photos, trophies from a kid’s Father’s Day…my college basketball. Everything that was evidence of my life was now gone, except for the phone I had, my car that drove me there, and the clothes I was wearing.”

The Reality Was ‘Jarring’

Trying to get his head around everything that defined him being gone in an instant wasn’t easy. “My reality, my what I know to be true, wasn’t matching reality,” he said. “Damn Like it was there was a huge disconnect there. Like it so jarring.”

Mentioning that many things can never be found again, Cameron said that he made a video, and his shock was so overwhelming that he “never heard sounds like that come out” of him. “It was like I was gasping in shock,” he added.

Describing it as “bizarre,” the ABC actor added, “There’s just this weird surreal feeling of being upside down in the world with no foundation.”

Fans React To The Description

While daytime drama fans can’t stand the character of Drew, they could grasp what Cameron tried to describe. One fan said, “Glad I saw this interview chat because sadly my opinion of Cameron was based on Drew…. that’s made me realize how good his acting is….Will see him in a whole new way now….”

Here are a few more reactions:

  • My heart goes out to you Cameron on your house going up in flames as that has always been my worst fear…losing pictures and my son’s baby book and trophies etc, is more important than any store bought possession!!!
  • I was so prepared not to like this interview because of Drew! Wow! Cameron is the complete opposite of his character. I now see him as strong, resilient, so caring and such a good man. I’m truly now a fan of Cameron.
  • I’m so glad that Maurice does this show because it gives us a different perspective on these actors. You get to know them as opposed to the characters that they play!
