The new Battalion Chief was a jerk. He just wasn’t wrong about why Vince died. Vince died because they broke command and firefighters weren’t doing what they were supposed to do. They often let Bode do whatever he wants. It was to the detriment of everyone around him. He leads with his heart. It made him a good man and a reckless firefighter. It doesn’t help that he’s holding onto pills. The pills were in a bag. Who put them in a bag? Was it Bode? Bode was given a pill bottle and why would he transfer them to bag if he meant to flush them like he told Audrey he would? None of it makes sense.
Bode has two choices. He either stays the good man or he hits rock bottom. He nearly swallowed two pills before he spat it back out. He needed to decide. Yes, its sad that his father died. He lost his only sibling and his father. The truth was that he lost his father twice. The first time was because of his addiction. The second time was because he broke command. He should have assisted his grandfather with the evacuation. He injured his knee. The most he could do was empty the building. And instead he let an old man with dementia convince him to be the hero.
Jake had been right that if Bode did everything he should have done then maybe Vince would be alive. Jake regretted those words later, but he wasn’t wrong. Vince died because of people’s failures. Richards didn’t want that to happen again. He pushed Vince’s old fire station through the ringer. There was a rumor circulating that he intended to shut down Firehouse 42. Its now more important than ever to impress him. Richards was looking for weakness and he seemed intent on torturing Bode of all people.
They got called out to the scene of a ziplining accident. Two guys were ziplining. One got stuck on the rope and his buddy fell down into the ravine. They both needed rescue. Manny and Audrey assisted with the man on the ground. The guy was bleeding. Audrey kept picturing Finn. Both bled out in front of her. It caused a panic attack. Manny helped her. He talked her through the spiral so that Audrey returned to her old self. They both realized she worked better when she starts spelling. She still got the job done and hopefully Richards take notice of that.
Bode and Jake got the guy that was up top. The guy’s name is Gage. Bode was a little short with him because this had been Gage’s idea. Gage was proposing to his girlfriend. His friend was going to help him set things up for the woman on the other side of the river. Gage was carrying a picnic blanket that got caught and caused all of this. His buddy falling. Him getting trapped. He also forgot about the fireworks he set up until he finally forgot about his cell phone that fell. The fireworks was Bode’s breaking point.
Bode nearly cracked. The fireworks during the dry season caused several small fires. Bode and Jake were ordered to put it out. Meanwhile Sharon ran into Renee. Renne came back in town after she heard about Vince. She arrived a little late and that was intentional. She said she arrived right as the lasagnas in the freezer were all eaten. That way Renee could offer more than just food. She helped Sharon donate some of Vince’s old stuff. Sharon accidentally donated Vince’s favorite leather jacket. They then ran around town looking for it and some guy had already gotten it.
He lost everything in the fires. Sharon wasn’t cruel enough to commandeer the jacket back. She instead asked the man if she could hug him and really she just wanted to be hugged by something Vince wore. It allowed her to grieve. Bode chose a different way to grieve. He finally snapped at Gage. Gage got upset that he used up so much money on the failed proposal and it was all for nothing. The firefighters doused the fires. They also doused his electronics. He cared about the last part than he did his buddy. And so Bode snapped.
Bode went off on the guy. He didn’t hit him. He just shouted at him. It was Vince’s birthday and he was in mourning. He found out that people got the stuff in Vince’s will. Vince made the will after Riley died and he never updated it when Bode came back into his life. That meant his guitar went to Eve. His firefighter’s axe also ended up going to Jake over Bode. Its an axe that’s been passed down from Leones for generations. Bode didn’t get the axe. He got Vince’s wedding ring that he still thought to give Bode even when they weren’t speaking.
Sharon invited the crew to dinner. Eve found Vince’s mom’s old sauce recipe. She made it and Bode skipped dinner while Renee made sure to be there. Eve played guitar after dinner. She saw a note left for Vince in the guitar case in which someone threatened to blow up his life by calling his wife. It was signed “R”. It could be Renee. Maybe that’s why Renee returned to town.
And Bode went looking for his drugs, but couldn’t find them and there’s no telling if he was going to use or flush them. Richards also told Jake that he saw the problem now. The problem wasn’t the team. It was just Bode.
