Executive ADA Nolan Price was dating someone new. Her name is Grace Hall. She’s a therapist. She specializes in Adolescence Mental Health and one of her patients was connected to Nolan’s latest trial. Nolan was alerted when the fifteen year old was found stabbed to death in the park. His name was Todd Feldman. He was a student at Northwood Academy. He struggled in the social department. He didn’t have many friends. He didn’t have any enemies. He mostly kept his head down like a typical teenager and it was only recently that he was coming out of his shell. He got a trumpet solo in the upcoming marching band competition.
Todd was practicing for it late into the evening. It’s why he was walking the park at night. However, his parents didn’t know about the Adderall hidden under his mattress. It wasn’t his prescription. It was given to him by another teenager at the same school. The other kid was Dylan Colavachecio. Detective Riley didn’t want to believe Todd’s death could be connected to a bad drug deal. His daughter was the same age and so he wanted to believe kids were still innocent nowadays. He went to the school to talk to Dylan. And it didn’t look good when Dylan tried to run.
Dylan almost got killed by running into the street. It was Riley who saved him. Riley brought the kid on charges of distributing a controlled substance and it got the kid talking. He didn’t kill Todd. He had no reason to. He sold those drugs to him the week before. He got paid the week before the murder. Todd just needed a pick me up because life was stressful and he was beefing with someone. Dylan thought he was arguing with a girl named Nora because she also wanted the trumpet solo. That wasn’t it. Nora got mad at Todd for him sharing a nude image of another girl.
The image he sent was of Cassie Moore. The cops went to her home. Her father thought she was at school. Her school thought she was at home. The dad was forced to track his daughter’s cell phone once he was told she was missing. When they found her, they had already collected evidence at her home. There wasn’t much clues found at the crime scene. Todd has his backpack as well as his wallet. His cell phone was missing. The cops had also found a bead from a charm bracelet near the body. It turns out Cassie has a charm bracelet missing a bead.
The cops tried to use that evidence to put her at the scene. Cassie was smart enough to claim that she lost the bead two years ago. She was going to deny and deny until she was blue in the face so a bead wasn’t going to shake her. Nor was it enough to press formal charges against her. The cops had to keep digging. They soon learned that Cassie got into an Uber eleven minutes after the murder and that she caught it at the same park where Todd was killed. She got two stars from her driver. He was angry that she made him make a pit stop.
The driver thought she just had to use the bathroom really badly. Only that wasn’t it. Cassie made that stop to get rid of evidence and so the detectives found themselves digging through the trash to find what she threw out. They found two items. She had tossed Todd’s cell phone and the murder weapon. She had used his phone after she had killed him. She texted his buddies to say the nude photo was fake. It was even true. The photo was indeed fake. Todd faked it to win brownie points with the popular crowd.
Cassie took a photo of herself in her new swimsuit. She was feeling insecure about an upcoming pool party. She sent it to someone she thought was a friend to get his honest opinion. Todd then used an AI program to remove the swimsuit so that it looked like she sent him a nude photo. The popular guys were ragging on him for being a virgin. He thought sharing a fake photo would make him seem like he sleeping with Cassie when she wasn’t. Todd threw away their friendship to fit with others and it didn’t work out in his favor.
All he did was drive an already unstable girl to her breaking point. She followed Todd into the park. She killed him. She grabbed his phone thinking that she could erase the damage he did. She texted the group chat that the photo was fake. She hadn’t known that Todd had already been found dead by then. That’s what undid her whole story. Brady spoke with Cassie again and she got her to admit to first degree murder. Nolan was even considering charging her as an adult when his girlfriend asked him not to.
Cassie was her patient. She’s been her patient since her mother died a few years ago. Grace didn’t feel that Cassie should be tried an adult when she was so young and unwell. Grace was willing to back up that feeling when she testified at the hearing to see if Cassie should be tried an adult. It was one thing to say that Cassie was a young fifteen because covid killed her mother. It also robbed her of some much needed social development. Grace didn’t know the full width of the case until Nolan questioned her in court.
Nolan asked her what would be her opinion if she knew that Grace had staked out Todd’s route days before she killed him. Or she chose the most secluded part on his route. Or that she planned on bringing a murder weapon. Or that she even planned her escape route in advance. She planned everything to the final point where she stabbed Todd in the back. Her plan just hadn’t been perfect. Nolan asked Grace on the stand if that sounds like a child. And Grace had to be honest enough to say that it does not.
The judge agreed that Cassie should be tried as an adult. Unfortunately, the judge also threw out Cassie’s confession. Cassie was pushed into it after her father walked out of the room and she was without a legal adult. Or counsel. It was everything else that was included. The victim didn’t do himself any favors either because he was unlikeable. It led to Nolan wanting to offer Cassie a plea agreement. Her lawyer would turn it down. Cassie and her father wanted to fight the charges in court. They put Cassie on the stand and she was a sympathetic victim.
Grace even showed up in court to support her. Or at least she tried to. Nolan saw her face when Cassie was testifying and it stuck out because of what he later learned. He learned that Cassie used a fake account to contact Grace on the day of the murder. Nolan had been with Grace. He saw that someone was blowing up her phone. She turned it off so that she could focus on their date and it’s a choice she regrets. Grace was put on the stand as a hostile witness. She later admitted that Grace told her that she was going to kill Todd. And that Grace dismissed it because she thought it was just words.
It’s why Grace was doing her best to support Cassie. She blamed herself for not taking the girl seriously. It just wasn’t her fault and it came out in court that Grace became something of a surrogate mother towards Cassie after her mom died. And that’s why she didn’t report it like she was supposed to, but Grace’s testimony sank Cassie’s case and Cassie was found guilty of murder one.
Grace could have held that against Nolan afterwards and she chose not to.
THE END
