Detective Velasco was leaving SVU. He was pulled in by the feds to assist with a cartel case. He has history with gangs and so he was experienced, but they told him not to tell his boss. He couldn’t do that. He respected Captain Benson way too much to disappear on her. He informed his boss about this assignment. He understood if she wanted to take it from him and she refused to do that. She wasn’t going to limit his career just to keep her team together. Finn was still out on leave. They needed Velasco and he has no known timeline of when he’ll be pulled in to work for the feds.

Until he gets pulled, Velasco was sticking around to work the latest case. There was a disoriented woman found wandering the streets of Time Square. Her name is Maya Moretti. There were so many drugs in her system that its highly unlikely she’ll ever make sense of what happened that night. The most she could say was that she needed help. She was wandering in her nightgown. The doctors ran a rape kit and it came back positive of an interaction that night. They just didn’t know what kind of interaction it was. Maya was detoxed of everything in her system. She later woke up coherent.

Maya just wasn’t talking. She said nothing happened to her. She was fine. She was dealing with a lot of shame and the new kid didn’t know how to deal with that kind of victim. Detective Jake Griffin was rather close with the new Chief of Detectives. He was practically a nephew because his dad was her first partner. She actually assigned him to SVU against Benson’s will. It was suspected he was a spy. Not that Benson was worried because her unit runs a tight ship. They were more concerned that “Griff” wouldn’t fit in.

Griff was known as Batman for being able to close his cases. He’s bound to find that SVU runs differently. They couldn’t pressure the victims. They had to remain supportive. They also couldn’t investigate things on their own. They had to work as a team and remain transparent with their captain. Griff had noticed that Maya had a barcode tattoo on her inner arm. He took a photo of it back when she was unconscious. It led to a private members only club called “Sensate”. It was a sex club. And Griff sat on the information until he followed it up.

Griff hadn’t known why a wellness club would frighten Maya. It took Curry to inform him differently. Curry knew about Sensate from her days in IAB. She was investigating cops working as bouncers for the place and her boss was told to drop it. When he kept pushing, he was transferred to Staten Island. The case ended up disappearing after that. The wellness club was actually a sex club. It was such a big deal because often sex clubs were a front for drug trafficking. They were also known for being a breeding ground for sexual assaults.

The victims consent to one thing that quickly turns into something more. They rarely come forward afterwards. They often forget that consent was a continuous process and that there should be limits. The club was ran by Derek Simpson. He ran several clubs that all eventually failed. It was only Sensate that turned a profit. He has a lot of one percenters as clients to this sex club. Though the club itself was less about consensual connections. The women there were blackmailed and drugged to the point where they couldn’t consent.

The club was essentially a playground for men. The women signed NDAs. They risked being fined a hefty sum if they broke it and so Maya didn’t speak because she didn’t think she was allowed to. Griff had wanted to prove himself with this case. He told Benson that he had a contact that could get him in touch with Derek Simpson. The contact was a criminal informant that came through for him. He got the meeting. He and Bruno both went in undercover at the club. They both saw some pretty questionable behavior.

They were still gathering information. They were told to go home after the club. They would keep digging tomorrow according to their captain. None of them counted on Batman trying to fly solo again. Griff saw the women at the club. He couldn’t leave them there defenseless. He went back in by himself. He wasn’t supposed to do that and he had to apologize for it with his captain. She nearly transferred him to a different department. The only reason she didn’t go through with it was because Griff got something.

Griff managed to talk to one of the young women working at the club. She agreed to meet with them. Her name is Isabella Cruz. She was told by a friend that she could serve shots at a high-end club. She moved to NYC for the job. They offered her insurance, a place to stay, and then other things were added in. Simpon got her hooked on drugs. Then he turned off the tap to force her into doing prostitution. He was a high-end pimp. She only got the drugs back so that she could disassociate as he continued to sell her throughout the night.

Isabella was willing to come forward against him because Griff was the first person to value her. She didn’t think anyone would care about her plight until he saw her. With her testimony, they got a warrant for the club. Simpson was arrested. He and the women he pimps out were all represented by the same lawyer. His name is Daniel Olin. He was slime. He made a deal to evade prison himself. He now represents his friends. He just wasn’t allowed to represent both assailant and his many victims. Olin had to drop one. He chose to drop the women. He continued to represent Simpson.

The women were free to talk against him now. They testified. Benson also talked to Maya again. They found video of her assault and she proved to be the final nail in the coffin. She testified against Simpson. She informed the court that he does threaten those women. He threatened her for defending them. Simpson was later found guilty of the many charges against him thanks to Maya. Carisi got help on this case from a new ADA and it looks like she’s sticking around. The same goes for Griff.

Griff learned that this job has a learning curve. He needed to stop being solo Batman and finally join the Justice League.

And in the final moments of tonight’s episode, Benson heard that Stabler was in the hospital.

THE END
