On tonight’s 9-1-1 episode, the lava was fast-moving. It was spreading towards a college campus. There were a lot of kids stuck in their dorms. The firefighters were doing everything possible to save lives and it was harder to do once vog was developed. Vog was volcanic fog. It was pushing chemicals in the deep earth.

There was a lot of it that wasn’t healthy and that goes double for a big city. There had been one girl trapped in her dorm room. Her name is Peyton. Peyton was promised that the firefighters were on their way. It was taking forever. It got so bad upstairs that Peyton felt for sure that she was going to die and so she hung up on 911.

Peyton wanted her last few moments to herself. She was giving up when Chimney showed. Chimney couldn’t send anyone else into the building because the fire was too much of a risk.

He went himself because that’s what Bobby would’ve done. He got the girl out and he reassured Josh. Josh had been the dispatcher that promised Peyton she was going to be alright. Still, the firefighters had to rush so many people to the hospital due to the vog giving people chemical burns. Some of which they breathed in.

The firefighters were safe. They had protective gear. The everyday civilians were the ones going from bad to worse. Most of those college kids were taken to Mae’s hospital. The same hospital that was later told to evacuate. They were in the lava moving zone. The Office of Emergency Management called them to clear the building.

The charge nurse told them that they couldn’t move people without a place to take them to. The other major hospital nearby had gotten destroyed and sent their patients to Presbyterian Hospital. Where can the patients from Presbyterian go?

Maddie was running things at OEM. No one else wanted the job. They were afraid of having the catastrophe fall back on them and that’s when Maddie stepped up. It was now up to her to deal with the crisis.

She couldn’t find a place to move the people so she chose to move the lava. She was going to push it into the subway system because at least underground – others would be safe. There was a downside though. She didn’t know that Athena was trapped underground with two others. They called for help at their location only to learn that lava was heading right their way.

Athena couldn’t even escape with the others because Sparks was injured. Matthew Sparks has come a long way from the cocky rookie she tried to train. He got fired after shooting an unarmed civilian and that woman was who was thinking of once he injured himself. He saved Harvey as well as Athena. He got them over a river of lava. His ribs punctured him. He was bleeding out internally. He asked Athena to tell the woman he was sorry. He was too afraid to tell her himself before then. And Athena refused to make that promise.

Athena didn’t want to give him a reason to let go. She told him that he had say the words himself. Havery helped her get a call out. They called 911. They told them their location and Maddie passed it on to Chimney. The 118 raced to get everyone out of there. It really came down to the wire for Athena this time. The poor woman couldn’t go anywhere. Every vacation ended in a catastrophe. Athena was always running into problems and she got really lucky that a man with a head injury managed to remember when he used to work for the phone company.

They saved the day. Maddie saved the day. Will she get credit for the saves or the loses? Time proved the latter. The coastal breeze had cleared the vog. The lava was hardening. The subway system was down for a time. It was a win and that still didn’t matter for the Mayor’s office. They caught heat for letting a working class neighborhood while the wealthy one survived. It didn’t matter that the wealthy ones were in the direct path to the rest of the city. That’s what was saved. The rest of the city. They gave up a few blocks to make that possible and still the mayor brought in Sue to fire Maddie from the leadership position.

It was technically a demotion. Maddie was back to being a dispatcher. It was a job she loved. It didn’t even matter that she became the face of the losses and someone else took on the wins. She returned to what she was best at. Her brother on the other hand finally got a talking to as well. Buck was raising Theo. He turned everything into a joke. He played down his injuries. He dismissed his fears. Eddie felt compelled to say something and Buck didn’t want to hear it. He didn’t want to be told that Theo needed boundaries. He needed a parent. Not a friend.

THE END!
