In tonight’s Chicago Fire episode, the complaint against Kelly Severide went through. It had to have happened sometime. It’s unfortunate that it happened before his promotion came through because now that’s on the backburner. He’s been accused of dereliction of duty.
The new Chief was claiming Severide never sought authorization from Headquarters before assisting OFI. Helping them or assisting them was considered wrong. Chief Hopkins was pushing this because he was hoping to get Severide fired. He wanted pay back for what happened to him thanks to Benny Severide.
Severide’s father suspended Hopkins. Severide knew that Hopkins was still sore about it. Which is why he tried to find out what happened twenty years ago. He uncovered a thin paper trail with no real reasoning. It could be that something big happened or it could be it wasn’t big at all.
It was hard to determine with someone like Benny. Severide’s father was quite messy on the job. Severide didn’t even find out he had a half-brother until Damon joined CFD. His father could’ve had any reason for why he suspended Hopkins. And almost cost the man his career.
It just wasn’t Severide’s fault. He would’ve been a kid when the incident happened. He wanted to keep digging until he found out the truth. His wife talked him out of it. She said it wouldn’t look good if he interrupted an active investigation. Now, she couldn’t stop her husband from confronting Hopkins.
Hopkins was sitting quite smug about possibly ruining a Severide’s career. Severide didn’t punch him even if he wanted to and so he listened to his wife when she constantly reminded him to let her do it.
Kidd was going to look into the suspension. She also stopped him from investigating a fire they responded to on tonight’s episode. They were called to an empty storefront that the homeless were using for shelter.
They lost one person and it was tough on everyone. Severide smelled gasoline from where the victim was found. It could be from a heater or it could be arson. Severide reported it. Kidd warned him from doing anything else. Captain Hargrave then called Headquarters to personally request his assistance. It upset Hopkins.
Hopkins was forced to allow it because he really didn’t have a choice. It just that he motivated him towards a new level of nastiness. He talked to Kidd. He said they have a good working relationship in spite of her being married to Severide. He claimed he didn’t have to end. He then threatened to break up Firehouse 51 if Severide wasn’t forced out. He was crueler once he lost control over what happens to Severide. Severide in the meantime went to work. He went with Hargrave and they ran into an issue.
The owner of the building had put up a cash reward for any information about the fire. It’s possible he had an insurance policy refusing to pay it unless the fire was determined to be arson, but his reward for information has the homeless people that used to live there turning on each other.
There was a guy that broke into the building to investigate. What he did was mess with the crime scene. There was a young woman who stopped by the firehouse to give a tip against someone she knew. The man she named has been in rehab for the past week and never left.
The hundred thousand reward has people willing to break the law just to get it. They were homeless. The hundred thousand would go a long way towards getting them back on their feet.
As it happens, the woman was paid off by the building owner. He set the fire. He wanted to get the homeless out and to get rid of the building in return for the insurance money. He never bothered to lock the back door or go about legally kicking them out. He just chose the most selfish action he could. And it killed a person.
Severide made his case. He was free to return to 51. Something Hopkins didn’t like. Kidd also couldn’t gain access to the files she was looking for on Hopkins because she didn’t have high enough clearance.
Lucy found out about it when OFI called her to tell. Lucy didn’t tell Kidd. She instead got the file that she was looking for and she dropped it off at Kidd’s apartment. It was all very hush hush. This thing might be a juicy enough story to end up in Mouch’s memoir. He was writing a memoir about what it was like being a firefighter for over twenty years.
The firehouse loved the tidbits they were getting. Herrmann particularly loved the name. “From Couch to Command”. Not bad for a man once labelled half-man/half-couch.
Cruz also helped Jamie Holt. The firefighter who was there with him for the plane incident and who struggled with losing another person on the job. Cruz told him what it took for him to come back after losing Otis. And he promised to always be there if Jamie wants to talk.
THE END!
