In tonight’s Chicago Fire episode, Things were finally returning to normal at the firehouse. They were training their probies. Novak and Vasquez was joking with each other again. It was good until they went out on a call. They were called to a chemical leak at a plant. The probies were warned to search for a valve. They weren’t supposed to touch it.
Kidd had been very clear in her orders and unfortunately she couldn’t stop one of them from making a critical mistake. Someone touched the valve. They tried to turn it off on their own. They made a critical mistake and it nearly took down a fellow firefighter. Tony was left injured because of what happened.
Tony and Capp were the ones on squad. They were familiar with the procedure. It should’ve been them handling everything because in someone else’s hands – mistakes were made.
Tony was luckily going to be fine. He was taken to an ambulance right away. He was held overnight as a precaution and released pretty fast the next day. The mistake wasn’t costly this time, but Kidd didn’t want to risk a second time. She went looking for the valve. She found another valve that someone mistakenly turned because they thought they were turning the gas off. They ended up spiking the gas pressure.
Its why it blew up like it did in Tony’s face. If he hadn’t been wearing a mask, it would’ve burnt him. The firehouse has already lost Cruz and it doesn’t help that Cruz has recently entered a depression that no one could pull him from. They weren’t going to lose another member of their firehouse family because of a probie’s mistake.
Kidd and Severide investigated the matter. It was soon revealed it had to have been one of the probies. They spoke to the group. They asked the person responsible to come forward.
Only that person refused to take the blame. He didn’t even care when they explained what he did was wrong. He stayed silent in a group hoping to hide. These four probies all competed with each other to stay out of the floater pool. They wanted to get sent to the right house. They didn’t want to risk their careers.
Kidd told them at the start that they would be judged together rather than separately. It forced them to work together. They now didn’t want to take the blame for each other. There wasn’t a single person that came forward at the end of shift for their mistake.
Herrmann was also seriously worried about Cruz. He visited him. He didn’t speak for long because Cruz’s depression was now in its anger phase. Cruz was lashing out at his loved ones. He hated that he wasn’t getting better. He thought he hit a wall. He told Herrmann as much. He also added that he was never going to be the man his family needs. He was hating himself more than he was hating anything or anyone else. He especially blew up later on when Herrmann sent him Otis’s old cane. It made Cruz feel like he should be happy to be alive.
He got so angry that he finally left bed long enough to get down to the firehouse. He yelled at Herrmann. He demanded that Otis’s case go back to where it was supposed to be. He was there when the others noticed him. They began to talk to him. Cruz didn’t want to say how bad he’s gotten. Nor could he fob them off like he did with Herrmann. He joked with the guys. He also gave Severide advice. They found out which probie turned the valve. It was Firefighter Candidate McCaffrey.
The senator’s kid. Sure, he has connections. He also has a lot to prove. He never once came forward. They weren’t sure if he ever planned on talking and that was sticking with them as they make the decision to reprimand him or simply cut him loose. Severide asked Cruz for his input on the matter. Cruz couldn’t say because he didn’t know the probie. He didn’t know if the kid was going to learn or was worth being cut. Caffrey told his dad the senator to pull strings. His dad was in charge of the city’s pensions. He leaned on the higher ups to get Severide to drop the matter.
The thing is Severide was leaning towards giving the kid a chance until the threats were made. He told Kidd about it. They both reported Caffrey to their boss. They told Caffrey that he was done. Caffrey then double down on his threats against them. He showed his true colors in that phone call to dad than he did when they informed him they knew about his mistake. Caffrey was so entitled that he took it out on Burke. He said Burke was shady and that no one knows anything about him. Burke said at least he was still there. The DC accepted the recommendation.
This was it for Caffrey.
And Novak met a guy on that first call from earlier. She had to rush Tony to the hospital and so she didn’t get the guy’s number. Its okay because he gave Vasquez his number to pass on to the hot blonde paramedic. Vasquez left it in his pants when he put in the wash. He then made it up to Novak by tracking down the guy using his police contacts. He even chaperoned their date with Violet. Violet could see that he didn’t sit right with him. She asked him why didn’t he take a chance on a relationship with Novak and he said he tried. He then refused to explain what he meant by “tried”. But Cruz went back to physical therapy and he was making strides.
THE END!
