In tonight’s Chicago Med episode, Dr. Daniel Charles started to volunteer at suicide hotline. Sure, it can be draining. He was up to two in the morning taking calls. He down several cups of coffee and still showed up for his shift at the hospital. He finds his work very rewarding. It also doesn’t hurt that he was single again.
He had a little more free time nowadays. His kids were adults. They knew to call if they needed him. The same for his fellow doctors. They often see the worst aspects of life on the job. They especially enjoyed it when they got to see the best of people.
Like Jeremy Lockhart. He found out he has an aggressive form of cancer. It happened as he and his wife was pregnant with their first child. Things have since taken a bad turn. He’s dying.
He’s trying to hold on long enough to meet his daughter and he has even started making videos that she could watch during big moments of her life. There was a video for when she gets her first adult job. He tried to teach her how to drive in another video. He also made a video for her first day at kindergarten.
Jeremy was a good person. He wanted his daughter to know how much he loves her. Even if he couldn’t be there himself. He’s been dying all throughout his wife’s last trimester and so the doctors got worried when they saw the couple come into the ED. Thankfully, it wasn’t for Jeremy this time. His wife’s water broke.
Esme was having the baby that day. Its good that its happening early because Jeremy didn’t have a lot of time left. The doctors put the couple in a double room so that Jeremy didn’t have to stay in a wheelchair the whole time. They both got to be careful during the last stretch.
Dr. Charles also later received a very unique patient. There was a woman who came in after falling during acupuncture. She said she got a back spasm and that’s why she fell onto her back.
The doctors removed the needle only they were still concerned about the spasms. Charles asked them to run some tests. It came back that she was suffering from a rare disease. It was so rare that they didn’t have funding in place to find a cure. Most people didn’t get diagnosed until it was too late. Charles brought in Dr. Rabari for assistance and they told Gail about her condition.
They told her that medicine has come far enough that they could slow the progression of the disease. Gail heard about the funding problem and she offered to donate a hundred-fifty million dollars if they could find a cure. Rabari thought he could. He swore he could to Sharon. Only Sharon knew there were no guarantees in medicine.
They couldn’t promise anything to Gail. They couldn’t take the woman’s savings either. She won that money in the lottery. There were plenty of people who tried to suck up to her and manipulate her. It’s why she’s been relying a magic eight ball for advice.
Sharon couldn’t ethically or morally promise that woman anything. She also preferred it if her nurses treated Gail like a normal patient. They were tripping over themselves trying to suck up to her in the hopes of getting something. They were exactly the reason Gail needed that ball.
Charles and Rabari later spoke to Gail again. They told her how they would spend the money if given it. They also told her they couldn’t guarantee to find a cure fast enough to save her. There’s a chance that the CBD would kill Gail before they do.
Gail naturally left her decision on whether or not to donate to the magic eight ball. The doctors were hearing its decision when Dr. Frost came in with his parents. His dad didn’t have MS. He has a tumor on his spinal cord that could kill him in less than a year. He’s also known about it for the past four months.
He’s claiming that his own doctor said it might be MS or a tumor. He didn’t know for sure at the time and James didn’t go back to see him because he was lying to himself. He and the wife packed up to go see their son in Chicago.
Frost didn’t know if he could trust them again. He gave the benefit of the doubt. He was met with lies and he knew the real reason they came to see him. They wanted him to fix the problem like he always does. When he was younger, he paid for everything by being the breadwinner child actor.
They sunk his credit after he quit his job by running up debts in his name. He couldn’t rent anywhere as an adult and he had to get a roommate. There was also plenty of things they didn’t protect him as a kid. And yet he’s the one that has to fix everything.
It’s a role his parents assigned to him at birth and now he’s returning to acting just to help them.
Esme was taken into surgery. She was delivered of a baby girl that didn’t cry at first. Dr. Asher had to work on her for a bit and then the baby started to cry. She was a healthy little girl. They’ve named her Daisy. She got to meet her dad. His condition was worsening so he held her for their father/daughter dance.
The one he was going to miss being there in person for. It was very sweet of Dr. Archer to think of it. Archer has seen himself in Jeremy. He was going to be old enough to be his newest child’s grandfather. So, he worried about missing out on the big things himself.
Archer was going to be sixty-five when his new baby is born. Eighty-three when she graduates high school. He probably won’t get to walk her down the aisle either or have the father/daughter dance.
He still gets to be there when she’s born and he knows now not to ignore these gifts. Not with his future daughter or Hannah Asher. And still he went home with his new girlfriend.
And the hospital did not get the money because the magic eight ball ruled against them.
THE END!
