Detective Imani was still searching for her missing sister, Shari. Her sister disappeared over twenty years ago. Imani had been eight at the time. Her sister had been six. The cops had believed it was part of trafficking and unfortunately their leads went cold.
Most of them gave up. It was just Imani that still believes her sister was alive and she wasn’t wrong. She knew her sister was probably trafficked several times before she aged out of their interests. Imani suspected her sister developed a possible drug dependency.
It’s what a lot of girls going through trauma turn to for help. Imani keeps catching whispers of her sister. Never her sister herself. She checks out every available AA or NA meetings she could find. She rarely slept. She stayed up the whole time looking for Shari. She recently got Voight to help her in her search.
They found a young woman who might be Shari on an escort site. They later found the woman murdered. Voight was with her at the time. They took over the scene. They began investigating the homicide.
Voight called in. It was as they were waiting for the team that Imani found the victim’s phone. Her screen had a photo of the victim with Shari. It confirmed to Imani that she had been right.
Her sister was still alive and unfortunately still in the life. Imani wanted to pursue the lead. Voight reminded her that they were working the homicide.
The death of a girl by the name of Laura deserves to be taken seriously. He asked her if she was good and she claimed she was when she wasn’t. She was worried about why Laura was killed. And if Shari was involved.
Laura’s body had been dumped. It wasn’t where she was killed. They found out where she lived. Where she was last. Laura was killed in an apartment seemingly owned by no one.
It was probably a front of pimps if not a trafficking network. They found the blood. They knew Laura had been killed there and that there was no sign of Shari. Imani went outside to catch a breather when she noticed a man with injuries to his face. She went to go talk to him, but he tried to pull off in his car. Imani had to forcibly stop the car before he’d confess.
The guy was a john. He hired Laura/Lila and Sable. Sable being Shari. They ripped him off. They attacked him and fled. He swore he didn’t kill anyone or assault them.
He said he ran scared because he knew they’d done this before. He only went back the next morning to get his car. Imani didn’t believe him until they checked Laura’s phone records. It showed she was still alive after the john left. After they ripped him off. Imani soon found a friend of the supposed Lila and Sable who told her the truth.
Shari was being pimped out by her husband. He roughs her up. She always had marks around her neck. She’d work at Lucky’s as a stripper and he’d pimp her out in the parking lot.
The bartender they later spoke to confirmed it. She knew it was bad. She just didn’t know what she could do if the girl she knew as Sable didn’t want to press charges. Shari left her stuff behind because she stopped showing up to work one day. She began ripping off johns with her friend as a means of escaping her husband’s control.
By the brutal way Laura was killed, Shari’s husband must have found out what they were doing. Their friend said his name was Russ Kirby. It was a stolen identity of a child that died back in 2007. It wasn’t his real name. It turns out the husband they were looking for had a bunch of names.
They eventually found the marriage certificate by finding one of Shari’s old credit cards. She went by Sarah Jane Kirk on it. She was married to a man with that same last name. Another stolen identity. The cops found the house where they were staying. They searched through everything with the occupants gone.
They found Shari’s box of keepsakes. She graduated high school. She was in college. She’s also been with Kirby this whole time. He kidnapped her at age six. He pretended to be his father in a bunch of their identifications. He went from father to husband because he’s sick.
He refused to let go of her. Only Torres figured out where he was getting the fake IDs and passports from. They raided the house. Imani saw Kirby take off in the back and pursued him. Torres stayed behind to search the house. And he ended up finding Shari.
Shari was still alive. She was well. Imani finally got to reunite with her at the police station and Shari didn’t recognize her. It broke the heart a little.
