In tonight’s Sheriff Country, the Bood Moon Festival happened every year in Edgewater. It started out in the 60s. There were a bunch of hippies who came out to celebrate the Blood Moon that year and they were tripping on LSD when they wrote down their wishes to the Goddess.
Now, it’s an annual event for the town. They stopped taking drugs. They added family events. There was a brawl last year and that was left out to the sponsors covering the event this year.
Punch was extra schmoozy. He asked Mickey right out if his people could take the lead for once. He wanted security to be in charge because he felt the deputies overreacted the last time during the brawl.
Punch was the local rich guy. He nearly paid for someone else to run for Sheriff. Sheriff Mickey was still new to the job. She proving herself.
She was the Hero of Edgewater because she gave the last stand in that blow up with those sovereign citizens. Only that was becoming old news now.
Punch invited Mickey to show off to the sponsors that she would keep everything safe even as he was telling her not to be there. She sorta had to be there. She was in charge of keeping everyone safe. Punch wanted to get in the way of that.
Punch wanted the Blood Moon Festival to be bigger than Burning Man. It was the original event after all. He had an artist come in to create the Goddess statue every year.
He let that same artist skate away from assault charges after punching one of his security guards because he was too important to the festival. The guy has been doing the statue for twenty years. He probably knew about the missing girls if Cass was willing to ask. Cass brought her theory about a serial killer operating in Edgewater to Mickey’s attention.
Cass believes a serial killer was using the Blood Moon Festival to spot as well as abduct girls. Her sister being one of them. Her sister Lily hasn’t been seen in twenty years since she disappeared from the festival.
Most of the nine girls disappeared a few days afterwards. The others disappeared the day of. It was clear to Cass that this serial killer was using the festival as a hunting ground.
She brought her theory to Mickey. Mickey didn’t pull a Sheriff Watkins. She didn’t ignore a crime to maintain the pretense of a great small town.
Mickey instead asked Cass to find more evidence. They found the jawbone of one of the victims in Deadwater. Cass was cleared to go out there with the tech and ground penetrating rover. The rover didn’t find anything in the ground because that’s not where the killer placed his victims. C
ass realized while she was out in Deadwater that he placed them in a tree. They found two victims. One of them was the rest of the remains of Jessica Winters. It matched with her jaw bone. The other wasn’t Cass’s sister. Her name was Maggie Shipley. She disappeared in 2008.
She had the third eye of the Blood Moon Goddess carved into her skull. It was a part of the festival to write down their wishes and put them in a burlap sack. This killer put his note with his victim. They only found two bodies so it wasn’t deemed a serial killer just yet.
Not that it mattered to Mickey. Mickey wasn’t waiting around to find the third’s remains before she called a killer a serial killer. She wanted to shut down the this year Blood Moon Festival. She called Punch. She told him to shut it down. And he reminded her that she doesn’t have that authority.
The Festival brings in a lot of money to the county. The county council (also known as Punch’s golf buddies) gave the power to shut down the festival to him. He decided to go ahead with it in spite of the risks. Mickey had no choice than to flood the place with her deputies.
Punch was freaking out about it and she ignored it because she doesn’t care about reelection. She does care about stopping a serial killer. Cass stayed behind because Maggie Shipley was in the system. It turns out she did an ART rehabilitation program with the “artist” from earlier scuffle. Van Wainwright was his name.
Wainwright even took a photo with Maggie that was still in his file. Some of the other victims did the program with him. The others merely attended the Blood Moon Festival. Wainwright has been coming town every year for the event. The Blood Moon Goddess got creepier and creepier.
Cass felt he was the guy. She went after him in the Corn Maze and they caught him about to sexual assault a young woman matching the victims description. He just wasn’t the guy. He missed two Blood Moon Festivals. One for his brother’s wedding. The other for an art exhibit in Germany.
Wainwright wasn’t their killer. To make things worse, the person who later went after Cass that night was the killer.
Luis was still at the station watching a fugitive that has already escaped him once and so no one knew what happened to Cass until it was almost too late now that she was off desk duty.
THE END!
