In tonight’s The Walking Dead: Dead City episode, Dillard was crazy. Most people knew something was off with him when he kept deaders at his bar. They overlooked it because he proved so helpful and their whole community felt regret. They were kicking themselves for not seeing how dangerous Dillard was.
The first sign that something was off was his closeness to literally anyone willing to talk to him. He’d latch onto them as he did with Negan. The one line in the sand had been his deaders. Negan killed both so Dillard wanted revenge. He wanted to kill Negan.
When not everyone chose to side with him in his vengeance, he turned on them. He shot Renata. He knocked out Luis. He roped in their security faction into an all out war on the rest.
The worst part about the whole thing was that killing again might’ve helped him with his psychosis. Dillard chose to befriend deaders because he doesn’t see much of himself. He looks into a mirror and he doesn’t see eyes or nose or mouth. He saw a blank slate. It wasn’t until he put back on his NYPD uniform and had carved into his own face that he finally saw himself again.
It just didn’t change his obsession with the walking dead. He did keep Renata until she reanimated. He then took out her nails and her teeth. All done in front of her brother.
Luis was still useful to the crappy world they were building. It’s the only reason he wasn’t killed outright. Luis had to watch the body of his sister get desecrated for reasons he’d probably guessed at and he told Dillard that his sister wouldn’t want him to kill him. Only he was going to do it one day. He swore to one day do it for what happened to his sister.
Luis was a man who never forgot his late wife. Or following her last words to track down her parents. He also put aside vengeance once to do right by his late brother and now he’d do right by that community Renata had been building.
He swore to do so by killing Dillard. Not sure how it can be done. Dillard had Luis tied up to a post outside where he attracted a bunch of deaders to the location. He then put it on speaker that Negan turning himself in will save both Luis and the community.
Negan wanted to do it. He tried to sneak out to do it. Maggie stopped him. She came up with a plan. The plan required at least three people so they had to use Hershel as well. Hershel secured the community’s apartment building.
Negan lured Dillard to his location. He killed some of Dillard’s men. Then again he had help with that last one. Hershel killed his first person. He killed one guy who was trying to hold them hostage at the building. Maggie also killed a few of them. Maggie saved Luis as well.
She helped him escape from Dillard’s men. They put down Renata so that may finally be free. She then trapped somewhere safe so that she could go after Dillard alone. Maggie caught up to rescue Negan. Negan warned her to shoot Dillard. She didn’t take it so Negan had to find an opening. He sweet talked that sicko.
Dillard still wanted to be friends. He was upset about his deaders, but he also wanted to hold onto Negan. It was so obsessed that he killed one of his own men for trying to kill Negan when he initially wanted to do it himself.
Then he changed his mind. He said that Negan could prove they were buddies. He just needed to stab Maggie. Negan stabbed where he knew it wouldn’t kill her and then he attacked Dillard
They fought for the gun. They were wrestling that as Maggie was wrestling a literal deader. Thankfully, Luis broke out. He saved Maggie’s life. He gave her a weapon. She’s the one that ultimately caused Dillard’s death. She caught off one of his arms. He bled out in Negan’s arms. The same Negan that seemed so scary a minute ago hadn’t been lying when he called Dillard a friend.
They had spent months together at that bar. They had been friends. Negan held Dillard in his arms as he breathed his last and then he released him so that he too could become one of the walking dead.
Its what Dillard would’ve preferred anyways. They had saved the community. The threat came from within rather than outside. It made Maggie seriously consider security going forward. And that’s why she asked Negan to head it up.
Luis didn’t get the chance to kill Dillard, but he played a part in his death and that was enough for him. He went back to his hospital to help new interns learn how emergency medicine. The community came back together. They found new guards to replace the old. Its still going to be crazy when Negan leads them though.
The man was an agent of chaos and there’s no telling what he’ll get up to next season.
THE END!
