In tonight’s The Walking Dead: Dead City, this wasn’t the end of Negan. No way! He broke the rules of the new sanctuary city and Renata was going to realize that she can’t control him or dictate to him. Negan was an island. He proved as much when he intentionally broke Dillard’s heart. He accidentally killed one of Dillard’s undead.

Dillard demanded an explanation. He didn’t care about the live man that Negan killed. He cared about his undead friend. The person that’s been with him for a long time. Negan tried to warn him to stay clear of the bar. And Dillard was refusing to go so Negan hurt him even further.

Negan killed the other undead friend. He left Dillard without anyone. These are the people that Dillard talks to like they’re still alive. He cared about them and Negan took that away

. Once by accident but the other by a protective streak to get Dillard out of harm’s way before Renata returned. He practically dared the woman to return with her army. He was afraid Dillard might get hurt because not even he realized how unhinged the man is. Dillard would later go on to carve up his own face.

Why? Dillard needed a reason to go over to the hospital. He claimed that Negan attacked him. He claimed that Negan had slashed his face and that Negan was a coldblooded killer. Renata then finally admitted that the Dama didn’t kill herself like everyone believed. Negan killed her. He admitted as much to Renata.

She kept it from Maggie because she thought of the bigger picture. Maggie told her to keep thinking of it that way because something about the situation didn’t seem right. She wanted to know first why he killed Fabian.

It was Fabian’s gun. Negan took it off him. He did it because Fabian was talking about killing Maggie and that was Negan’s red line. He then killed the man after his unarmed him because let’s be honest. Fabian would’ve remained a threat. Its not like he would’ve come around to thinking he was wrong.

He was someone that needed to blame someone else for his embarrassment else he’d have changed after he was caught stealing food. He has a wife. He has two kids. Yes, there needed to be repercussions. It just wasn’t why Dillard was leading the charge to kill Negan in retaliation.

The real reason wouldn’t win him any sympathy. Its why he came up with a fake one of being attacked. Dillard wanted to kill Negan for killing his undead friends. It was his only motivation. He was creepy and was using this chance to butter up Renata. He wanted her to replace what he lost. His undead sex companion who couldn’t leave him.

Maggie was standing against him and those weird desires of his. She wanted to peacefully resolve the matter. She asked Renata for time. She went into the bar alone. And talked to Negan.

Maggie’s instincts had been right. She found out why Dillard was leading the charge when she spotted his friends in the corner. She talked to Negan. She tried to get him to agree to prison time. He’d serve his sentence in a monitored apartment rather than a jail cell. He refused to take her offer. He said prison is still prison.

He didn’t want any part of it. He asked Maggie to kill him. She refused to do it. She couldn’t kill a friend. Which is what Negan has become to her. He was a friend. It didn’t matter how much Maggie tried to deny it.

Negan was her friend now. She couldn’t betray him or kill him. She didn’t want anyone else to kill him either. Renata had her own reasons for wanting Negan dead. She remembered what the Croat said. He had apparently learned everything from Negan. Negan was a bad guy. Or at least he used to be a bad guy.

It’s hard to determine in this new kind of world. The older set remembered when they were governed by laws and they wanted to return to a world like it. They were finding out it was harder to build such a world from scratch.

Blood will eventually get spilled. Renata was losing it on the outside of the bar all the while Maggie’s plan of drugging Negan proved fruitless. Negan couldn’t be fooled.

He saw through it. There’s no way Maggie would tell him a story of a drink at that very moment and he had been right about her. He could kill Fabian. He could kill the Dama. He could do those things for Maggie. He just couldn’t go back to a cell. He was letting the clock run out as a means of letting them come in and kill him. He thought Renata would do it.

Negan had been wrong about that one. Renata couldn’t go through with it. She had changed her mind about killing and it led directly to Dillard betraying her. He shot Renata and knocked out Luis. He allowed Hershel to run off because killing a kid would be everyone’s breaking point.

He handcuffed Renata even as he wanted her dead. She really was going to replace his undead sex slave if he had his way. Hearing the attack finally convinced Maggie that Negan had been right about Dillard as well. He’s crazy.

Dillard stopped being a cop a long time ago. He’s now just a crazy man with a fetish. He destroyed the security cameras. He took over control of the city.

He was an evil that was spreading and he convinced some followers to help him. They were killing off the others. They were stealing food. They wanted to trap everyone in the apartment building.

Dillard knew it would force Maggie to come back to defend the community and he wasn’t wrong. She escaped the bar with Negan thanks to help of her son, but it doesn’t mean she was going to drag him into a war.

So, they have two guns on their side up against an arsenal.

THE END!
