60 Minutes news anchor Morley Safer is dead at 84 years old. The iconic reporter retired from his gig on ’60 Minutes’ at the beginning of May 2016. Just last Sunday, CBS aired a special episode on Morely Safer’s career and his may years of service at the network titled, ‘Morley Safer: A Reporter’s Life.’
CBS broke the news of Morley Safer’s sad death around noon on May 19. The network announced that Safer had passed away – however did not reveal a cause of death.
Safer worked as a freelance war correspondent in the 1950’s and 1960’s and then he settled in at CBS on ’60 Minutes’ in 1970. Morley put in a total of 46 seasons on the Sunday night award winning news program. Upon his retirement earlier this month, Morley released this statement:
“It’s been a wonderful run, but the time has come to say goodbye to all of my friends at CBS and the dozens of people who kept me on the air. But most of all I thank the millions of people who have been loyal to our broadcast.”
Morley Safer lived a long and exciting life – the American reporter was born in Toronto, Canada in 1931. Throughout his 46 seasons on ’60 Minutes,’ Morley did over 900 news reports on various topics and took home 12 Emmy Awards, among many other honors and triumphs. The final report that Morley did that aired on CBS was about Danish Architect Bjarke Ingels.
Morley Safer was truly a cornerstone on CBS, and he will be sadly missed by his friends, family, and viewers at home.
