Tonight on ABC Family new show premieres with an all new Monday June 8, season premiere called “#WelcometoMyWorld,” and we have your weekly recap and spoilers below. On tonight’s episode, Ben struggles in school and goes on a strange shopping trip with his girlfriend and their dads in the series premiere of this reality show about a teenager who learns to deal with big changes in his life as his father becomes a woman.

On tonight’s episode as per the ABC Family Synopsis, “Ben is an ordinary Midwestern teenager, going through a unique situation. After his parents’ recent divorce, Ben learned that his dad is transitioning into a woman, Carly. In the series’ opener, “#WelcomeToMyWorld,” Ben is struggling in school, and his parents, Suzy and Carly, are not happy about it. Ben’s girlfriend, Danielle, would like to introduce Carly to her father, who is also transgender, leading to an awkward shopping trip for the four of them. And Ben’s sister, Sutton, returns home to Evanston to plan her upcoming wedding.”

#BecomingUs starts with high school junior Ben who lives in Evanston, Illinois and has a girlfriend named Danielle. He says he has loving parents and then she came along and his world was turned upside down. He says he has to deal with her so they can understand each other. He says her is Carly and Carly is his dad. #WelcomeToMyWorld starts with Ben chatting with his mom Suzy.
She’s a fitness instructor who says her children are the most important thing to her. She says she wants to support Ben. He’s running late to see Danielle and can’t find his camera. He finds it and hugs her then leaves. He and Danielle are at the waterfront and he’s taking photos. Then she snaps a selfie. Ben says he loves photography. Danielle says it’s weird that high school sucks and she’s not enjoying it.
Ben says people are rude and she says it’s not a normal thing he’s going through. He says last year his parents told him they were getting divorced and his dad wanted to become a woman. He says he noticed his dad had grown boobs, like real boobs. He says then everything changed. Carly, who used to be Charlie, Ben’s dad meets them. He says Ben was his little shining star and was a perfect kid.
He says he tried to make his life fit what was expected. He says he had a lot of fun being that person but after a while it became harder to be that person that he never wanted to be. He says he had a drinking problem and there was shame because he didn’t feel comfortable in the body he was born in. He says he either went this route or he would have died. He says his transition has been healthy.
Carly says living an authentic life is healthier. Suzy says it turned their lives upside down and she was worried about Ben’s relationship with his dad. Carly says she told him that he would get more of her than before. Carly, Ben and Danielle go out to eat. Ben says he was working on a photo project. Danielle says the grades aren’t good. Carly is worried about Ben’s school issues and thinks he’s a little lazy.
Danielle tells Carly that her dad wanted to look at bras yesterday and it was weird. Ben says the big thing Danielle and he have in common is that her dad is transgender too. She says he started transitioning since she was seven and says it’s all been doing girl things with her dad she should be doing with her mom. Carly asks what to call her dad and she says he likes to be called he.
She says he considers himself a guy but wears makeup and has boobs. She says bras aren’t made to fit him. Carly says he can take her dad bra shopping. Danielle wants to introduce Carly to her dad but says her dad isn’t as confident dressing as a woman and says maybe Carly can help him out. Danielle says she has to talk to him and Ben says her dad is butch.
Ben’s older sister is Sutton and Suzy is her dad and Charlie is her step-dad but she never called him dad. Suzy and Ben meet her at the train station. Sutton shows off her engagement ring. She’s engaged to Kevin and they live in Queens. She came to visit her mom to plan the wedding and says she and Ben are best friends. She says she knows he’s going through a lot right now.
Sutton shows them her engagement pictures and says she turned around and then Kevin was there on one knee and she says she cried so ugly when she said yes. Suzy says she hasn’t been able to see and hug Kevin. She says he asked her permission and told her that he loves Sutton so much. Sutton says that’s great because her mom is her mom and dad rolled into one.
Suzy says Carly won’t walk her down the aisle and Sutton says she’s proud of Carly for being who she is but wants it to be about her and her fiance and isn’t sure what to do. Carly comes over and Suzy asks why he’s there. He says Ben forgot his phone. She offers him coffee. He says he knows he hurt his wife by starting this when they were still married. Suzy says she’s not feeling huggy today.
Suzy says they went to therapy when he was dabbling in cross dressing. She says she was willing to go along with it. Carly says she was getting breasts then Suzy asked about them. He says he wishes he could have been a better husband and a lot more transparent. Carly says Ben’s grades aren’t good and says they need to talk together maybe at dinner. She agrees that he’s struggling.
Suzy says she’s not angry about the transgender thing but about being with a man she can’t rely on. She says they both love Ben though and will work it out for him. Carly asks if she likes her haircut and talks about his highlights. Suzy jokes that she stole her hairdresser. Ben goes to meet some friends that he met at a skate park. He meets them – Ayton, Brook and Lathan. Brook dates Ayton and Lathan is her goth brother.
They ask Ben about school and he says it’s crap and his parents are on him about it. He says Carly is on him more. Ayton says Carly is looking hot and they all laugh. Lathan asks if they should call her she and Ben says they should look up all the pronouns. Ben says he’s just calling her Carly. Ayton says he’d just like to be called Yo. Lathan says it’s complicated and then asks what Carly likes.
Ben says Carly likes women sexually. Brook says it makes sense and Ayton says he told him he had to warn him but Ayton says he just thought he had two lesbian moms. Ben goes with Suzy and Carly for
an #AwkwardFamilyDinner. Suzy says they got his interim report card and he’s doing well in history, photography, lifeguarding but an F in English. Carly asks why. Ben says it’s him or the teacher.
Carly says it’s probably Ben who says the teacher may not be teaching well. Suzy talks about him taking online classes instead but Carly wants him to stay in traditional school and says high school itself is a learning experience. He says it’s part of real life including the jerks and bullies. Ben wants to do online school and Suzy asks if Carly will push it. She admits she’s not the stricter parent.
Danielle is peeling potatoes and her dad Dan shows her how to do it better. She asks how he’d feel about bra shopping with Carly. She says Carly could help him and Dan says that would be great and says it’s tough to go in alone and explain about his boobs and the issues. He says the sports bras dont’ even work right. He says after he goes for a jog his boobs are sore.
Danielle says she can’t believe this conversation with her dad. Dan says a gender conflict is a nightmare and he wouldn’t wish it on anyone. He says it’s not a hobby being who he is but reality. Danielle asks if he felt trapped because of her. Dan says he felt guilty and still feels that way. Dan says he can’t walk out the front door like this and she says he should be able to. She says people just need to shut up.
She says she wants him to live the life he wants to live. Danielle says people have called him a freak and it made her so mad that they made him feel bad. Dan says she’s smarter than he gives her credit for. She says she grew up with him being different and that’s made her a better person.
At Suzy’s place, Ben gets a Skype call from Danielle who tells him that her dad wants to go bra shopping with Carly then asks if Ben will go too. He says no but Danielle says Carly is his mom/dad. Ben says he has to mentally prepare and he says he’ll see her for that tomorrow. The four meet up and head to a boutique. Dan says he doesn’t know what size he is.
Ben says it’s not cool bra shopping with his dad and says he was his coach on all his sports team when he was growing up. Ben is freaking. The clerk measures Dan and then talks about options. Danielle says it’s like her dad is a pre-teen learning to wear a bra for the first time. They get him into a bra and Danielle says Carly can teach her dad all he needs to know. She says his makeup needs work too.
Ben has his eyes closed and tries to pretend he’s not there. Next they lace Dan into a corset. He likes that a lot. Dan says he feels hot today and says he’s felt the best about what he saw. He says he saw a woman’s body. Danielle says OMG and he says she’ll have to help him put it on but Carly says he can’t go to his daughter for that. Dan says he feels prettier and tells Carly they need to go out.
Danielle says she likes seeing her dad happy. She says she can live with him taking her shopping if that’s what it takes for him to be happy. Ben asks if they’re done. He’s thrilled it’s over. Ben calls Carly on video chat and Carly says he wants him to come over so they can spend some time and talk about some things one on one. Ben wants him to tell him now.
Carly says Ben plays with his hair like Fonzie then says it’s a face to face not Face Time conversation. Ben is worried what Carly wants to tell him since she usually prefers to tell him things on text or the phone. Sutton calls Kevin from her mom’s place and says she hates being away from him. He asks how it is and she says she and her mom are working on wedding plans.
She says she found a photo booth she wants. Suzy and Sutton go dress shopping. She says it will be a Romeo and Juliet theme. Sutton says she wants blush pink for bridesmaids and wants a veil. Sutton says she wants something in theme and tries on gowns. She tries on several and then comes out in one that looks very period. It has little cap sleeves and says she and Kevin met doing Romeo and Juliet.
She says the gown is like the one she wore in the play and Suzy agrees that’s the one. Ben heads to Carly’s to have the big talk. Ben says he hates school and is done with it. Carly says they all have to do things they don’t like and that’s not okay. Then Carly says he’s been transitioning for a few years and has tried to be thoughtful of others but doesn’t want to hide it anymore.
Carly says he wants to be able to use a women’s locker room at the health club and says he can’t living the way he’s living. Carly says she’s going to surgery on the boy parts to make them into girl parts. Ben is shocked and says it makes him pissed and it’s official that his dad will be gone. Ben says the person that made him will not have the thing that made him and it’s weird. Carly says he still loves him.
Ben says he needs air and goes out on the balcony. Ben says he just thought that things might go back to normal but this is real and there’s no going back – his dad is becoming a woman. Ben gets a text from Danielle’s while he’s at his mom’s. He doesn’t answer. Danielle says he’s so bad with his phone. She thinks his phone is list. She says he has some maturing to do but she cuts him slack.
Danielle says she gets hurt sometimes. She keeps texting and tells him to call her. Suzy and Sutton are talking wedding stuff. Ben tells Suzy he’s not hungry. He’s texting Ayton but won’t text Danielle back then says he’s leaving. He says he’s going with Ayton and Suzy tells him to come back soon since it’s a school night.
Ayton and Ben go out driving. Ben says he’s mad and has so many reasons. Ayton asks what was the straw and Ben says his dad being gone. Ayton says he has an idea to blow off steam. He says he has a surprise. They head into Chicago to the Public Hotel. They’re in the staff area and Ayton says his buddy works there. He says he has a great place for Ben where no one can hear them scream.
They go to the roof and check out the view. Ayton says it’s tight. Ben snaps some photos. Ayton asks to He tells Ben to scream at the top of his lungs and to let it out and be free. Ben takes a deep breath then screams. Ayton snaps photos. Ben lets out one small yell and Ayton says he needs to roar like a lion and let it all out. This time, Ben really lets loose and screams loud and long.
Ben thanks him and Ayton says no problem. They head back out. Ben says he loves his mom and dad/mom but doesn’t understand what Carly is doing. Carly says she’s not transitioning out of being a parent. Ben says it just feels like one thing after another. Danielle says Ben is struggling with this. Ben says he has to figure it out on his own.
Sutton says she thinks this is right for Carly but hopes he’s sensitive to Ben’s needs. Ben says it’s strange that his dad is becoming a woman while he’s becoming a man.
