On tonight’s Hawaii Five-0 season 7 episode 6, “Five-0 must free McGarrett’s mother, Doris (Christine Lahti), when Catherine (Michelle Borth) informs them that she was captured and is about to be executed after attempting to free Wo Fat’s imprisoned father. Also, Chin loses his appeal to have Sara’s adoption delayed, and she must move to Mexico.”

McGarrett had been enjoying a romantic night at home with Lynn when out of nowhere Catherine called him. Catherine had said that she was going to be stopping by and so right away that had told McGarrett that it was serious however he had been surprised to hear from her. Things between them hadn’t ended on a good footing and so he had every reason in the world for not wanting to see her again or simply wanting contacts. But McGarrett didn’t turn her away when she came to his door and he had also gotten the chance to introduce Lynn to Catherine and Catherine to Lynn. So the one thing that McGarrett hadn’t been expecting was for Catherine to want to talk about his mother.
McGarrett’s relationships with his mother had been equally as complicated the one he had with Catherine. However, Catherine’s news couldn’t wait. She had said that Doris was in trouble and in this case that meant Doris needed backup. Doris had apparently tried to break out Wo Fat’s father from a CIA blacksite and she had been captured in the act. So Catherine had told McGarrett that they were holding Doris and that she didn’t know where though McGarrett as it turns out did know where his mother was being held. McGarrett it seems had realized only later on that his mother had set up the meeting between him and Wo Fat’s father as a way to follow him to the older man. And so he knew her location.
Though McGarrett had still needed to be prodded before he went running to his mother’s rescue. McGarrett hadn’t wanted to free his mother because she thought that she had been reckless and he had been right. She was reckless. Doris had tried to break into one of the might tightly held CIA blacksites and there wasn’t a reason in the world for why she thought she could escape such a place with a prisoner in tow. So McGarrett had known that chasing after his mother was foolish yet he had done so anyways because it was his mother and he knew that Catherine would go on her own if she needed to. And so McGarrett had told Lynn where he was going, only he didn’t tell anyone else because he didn’t want to risk the mission.
McGarrrett’s friends however, didn’t know where he was and so they ended up following him to Morocco because they thought that he was in trouble. So Kelly, Kono and Lou all boarded a plane to follow McGarrett. Yet, Danny had been the only one left out. Danny had unfortunately gone out of town for something so he wasn’t keeping up with everything that’s been going on and what he was trying to keep up with was mostly his daughter. Danny seem to believe that Grace has a boyfriend so he had asked Lou to help with that and Lou has his own kids spying on Grace to find out who her boyfriend is. And so Danny clearly his own set of problems that have nothing to do with ticking off the CIA.
For that’s exactly what his friends were truly doing by going after Doris. Doris had made her decisions and she had known the risks. Though despite that, McGarrett still went after her and eventually he dragged his friends into what he was doing as well. Kelly, Kono, and Lou had all understood why McGarrett had gone after his mother and therefore they had offered to help him. So the small tactical force that is Five-0 later broke into a blacksite and McGarrett ended up his mother. And she had nearly beaten him because Doris was just that good while McGarrett was actually trying to hold himself back.
Only Doris did see in the end that he was her son and so she stopped beating the life out of him just long enough for McGarrett to tell her the plan. McGarrett had told her that he came to get her out of the prison and that they’ll be going as soon as his people cleared their way though Doris thought differently. Doris hadn’t wanted to leave the blacksite without Dae Won. Doris had said Dae Won had lost everything including twenty years of his life as well as his family. So she refused to leave her cell until her son agreed to rescue Dae Won too. However, rescuing Dae Won had slowed their original plan.
Dae Won was more closely guarded than Doris had been. So McGarrett and his mother tripped a few alarms just to get to Dae Won much less leave with him. But luckily for everyone involved, Doris had a plan of escape of her own. Doris had explained that she hadn’t done such a great job with breaking into the blacksite which was true however she said that she had at least figured out how to escape and so McGarrett went along with her plan. Only they had gotten captured again before they test what Doris had come up with and so Catherine had to reveal herself in order to rescue McGarrett and his mother.
However, Catherine did get them out and Doris’s plan of escape did work. They had all gotten out of the black site and Doris had said that Dae Won’s presence would ensure that everyone was safe. Dae Won has so many secrets in his head that it would be their own destruction if the CIA ever admitted that he was out in there in the world. So Five-0 was truly safe and McGarrett also got the chance to get a few things off his chest as well. He talked to his mother and they managed to find a way patch up their differences. Like why she felt she had to leave! And he also talked to Catherine while he was at it.
Catherine had found out from Lynn that he was going to propose to her and so tonight she told him that she would have said “yes”. Yet, while the trip to Morocco had been good for McGarrett, Kelly had ended missing the last few days that Sara was in Hawaii so he had been torn up by that. Kelly had tried to stop her adoption though there had been nothing he could do and so he had to give the little girl up. Even if he didn’t entirely trust her relatives in Mexico. So that’s that for now, but maybe something might change further down the line.
