The Master had made a tempting offer on tonight’s episode of “The Strain”. The Master had apparently wanted the Occido Lumen so bad that he was willing to give Eph back his son in exchange for the book. Yet, what the Master was asking him to do was no easy thing. To get that book much less turn it over would mean the end of the human race. So Eph had been left with a moral dilemma though deep down he just knew that he couldn’t go and steal the book from out under the professor. And so that’s why he later approached the professor with the truth.

Eph went looking for Professor Setrakian at his last known whereabouts however he ended up coming across Quinlan first. Quinlan didn’t know who Eph was or that Eph was originally CDC and was just as intent as everyone to destroy the Master. So their first meeting had actually been a little awkward when Quinlan attacked and came close to killing Eph to protect the professor’s location. Though thankfully Fet had been there that day so Fet had warned Quinlan off. Fet had said that Eph was a friend and Eph proved that when he told both the professor and Fet the truth.

Eph told them that the Master has his son and that he has reasons to believe his son hasn’t been turned. However, the Professor felt and even said that the only reason the Master probably hasn’t turned Zach was because he needed something from either the boy or from Eph. So that had confused Eph because he said he had no idea why he would have even registered with the Master, but it did seem odd that a massive strigoi attack happened right as he and Nora were leaving the city with Zach. And that the Master was now expecting him to hand over the Occido Lumen.

So Eph wanted to discuss what the Master might be planning for him yet the professor’s condition took a turn for the worse and his coughing stopped them from having a proper discussion. But strangely there was someone else that wanted to talk about that same book across town. Thomas Eichhorst who was supposed to be the Master’s right hand had approached Palmer of all people and told the other man that he wouldn’t be receiving the Master’s white until he got his hands on the Occido Lumen from the professor. And, well, it’s strange that the Master would send two of his acolytes on a mission of manipulating two different humans for the same purpose.

Was the Master hedging his bets?

Though Eph and the professor did get around to later talking about the book. Eph hadn’t mentioned that he was asked to hand over the book however he had asked the professor if he had finally found the cause of the Master’s destruction in the Occido Lumen. So he had been disappointed when the professor couldn’t give him a clear answer. The professor had been looking through the texts for months now and unfortunately he was only ever finding vague references to the supposed destruction rather than a much need manual on how to get the job done. And so Eph had been left frustrated by that and only Quinlan truly questioned why.

Fet and the professor had simply taken Eph at his word when he said that he needed to get his son back by any means necessary. However, Quinlan questioned why it had taken Eph so long to tell his “friends” that his son had been taken and to come looking for answers on how to destroy the Master. So Quinlan had told Eph all about how he had seen the Borgias betray their own as well as many others and he had been quite clear when he told Eph that he didn’t trust him. Eph though had been as equally clear when he said that he couldn’t trust Quinlan either.

So the two men were at an impasse. Yet, the professor and Fet thought that they were eventually getting a start on understanding the Occido Lumen when they were apparently contacted by someone that used to own the book. The men thought that his previous owner must have had some insight on what the book was trying to tell them so they agreed to a meeting because they thought this previous owner had contacted them to help. Only they hadn’t been approached by someone that had once owned the book, they had actually been approached by Palmer. Palmer had tricked the professor and Fet into showing for a meeting with him because he wanted to make a deal with the professor.

Palmer believed the professor had something he wanted. A cure to surviving the strigoi virus without any of the nasty side effects. So Palmer had contacted the professor in order to get his hands on the formula and he said that he was even willing to stop working with the Master if he could get the answer to eternal life. But the professor was wise to Palmer and he knew that that the other man couldn’t be trusted to honor an agreement. And so he reminded Palmer about what happened before when Palmer gave him his word.

Back then Palmer had betrayed him. So after the professor had reminded Palmer about what he did, he walked away without giving Palmer what he wanted. Though later the professor and Fet began talking about the cure he has been taking and the professor admitted that the cure wasn’t exactly the answer to immortality. He said that all it would do was prolong his life and then Fet mentioned it was good idea that no one told Palmer that. So the two men were driving back to their hideout when they thought that maybe it wouldn’t be such a bad idea to string Palmer along if they could get him to turn against the Master.

Yet, the Master was manipulating more than one person. So in the end, Quinlan did see Eph try to steal the book and he promised the other man that if he didn’t betray them that they could all kill the master and get his son back. And sadly it was unclear what Eph decided to do, but his son wasn’t as safe as Quinlan thought he was because the Master had dripped something into Zach’s mouth at the end of tonight’s episode.

THE END!
