Mike Huckabee Thinks Unmarried Pregnant Natalie Portman Sets A Bad Example

Not everybody thinks that Hollywood moral and lifestyle standards are healthy or advisable.  Mike Huckabee would have to be counted in that number.

On the Michael Medved Show this week Huckabee had the following to say:

“People see a Natalie Portman who boasts, ‘We’re not married but we’re having these children and they’re doing just fine.’ I think it gives a distorted image.  It’s unfortunate that we glorify and glamorize the idea of out-of- wedlock children.  Most single moms are very poor, uneducated, can’t get a job, and if it weren’t for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death and never have health care,” he said.  “And that’s the story that we’re not seeing.”

Of course – its a no brainer – the economic argument for normal people to be married or at least be part of a very committed couple BEFORE having kids is obvious.  But Hollywood stars have enough money to afford all that it takes to rear children even if they wind up single.  Besides, Mike is conservative and religious and so he is not likely to be thrilled about an unmarried pregnant woman up on the stage winning a major academy award.  Of course Natalie is engaged to Benjamin Millepied who attended the academy awards with her and they intend to marry so it seems Huckabee is making more of this story than it merits.  Lots of couples who intend to marry wind up with the woman getting pregnant a ‘little early.”

The idea that people will not have pre-martial sex is now, and always has been, a myth.

Back in 2007 Huckabee had the following to say about Jamie Lynn Spears who was pregnant:

“Apparently, she’s going to have the child, and I think that is the right decision, a good decision, and I respect that and appreciate it.  I hope it is not an encouragement to other 16-year-olds who think that is the best course of action.  But at the same time I’m not going to condemn her.  It’s a tragedy when a 16-year-old who is not really prepared for all the responsibilities of adult life is going to be now faced with all the responsibilities of honest-to-goodness adult life.”

So Huckabee shows that he is consistent in his beliefs – he is pro-life, pro-marriage, and wants America to realize that what is financially inconsequential for Hollywood millionaires can be, and is, often tragic for ordinary people.
