The most beautiful thing about my job as a writer is that I get the chance to yes, bring you all things celebrity-smut related – but to also bring to attention important matters at hand or simply to share controversial subjects that are making headlines.
As I went through my daily early morning routine today by sitting down with the ladies of The View (and by that I mean I was on my couch, they were on my TV), I was interested to hear about the latest ‘controversy’ over former Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon’s most recent revelation to New York Times magazine.
The actress, who has been in a relationship with a woman – Christine Marinoni – for quite some time and share a child together, said that being in a gay partnership “was a choice”. She said:
“I’ve been straight (Nixon was previously in a 15-year relationship with her ex Danny Mozes and shares 2 children with him) and I’ve been gay, and gay is better. For me, it is a choice, I understand that for many people it’s not, but for me it’s a choice, and you don’t get to define my gayness for me.”
These remarks have caused quite a stir in the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community. Gay blogger and activist John Aravosis said that Nixon ‘does a disservice to the gay movement by using the word “choice”’. He said that she should have used the word bisexual instead.
Nixon for her part is standing by her statement despite the backlash she’s received from the gay community. My (personal) belief is that we are so lucky to live in world where freedom of choice is an option, as well as making your own decision as to who you chose to have as your partner and share your life with. Does it really matter what word she uses to define herself and her sexuality? Is that what is truly important? How about being a good role model for just being happy and content in the place you are? For her, maybe it’s that simple – and to me, that should be enough.
