GCB Season 1 Episode 5 'Forbidden Fruit' Review: Dangerous Dallas Lovin'

The women of GCB continued to heat things up on last night’s episode entitled “Forbidden Fruit.” Love was definitely in the air and both Amanda (the new Dallas resident who can’t seem to pull herself out of the drama pool) and her mother, Gigi, found themselves indulging in fruit that was quite forbidden. Off-limits love, if you catch my drift.

Last week we saw one of Gigi’s acquaintances and romantic rivals, Bitsy, bite the dust. And it just so happens that Bitsy had something that Gigi couldn’t wait to get her hands on: a man. With Bitsy out of the way (how awful does that sound?), Gigi took the opportunity to stoke the fires of love by getting with Burl. There was a lot of secret hanky panky happening, as Gigi didn’t want to be public with her new romance fearing the always-gossiping women of Dallas would judge her and Burl for having relations so soon after Bitsy’s death. And by trying not to create drama, the couple . . . yep, you guessed it, CREATES A WHOLE BUNCH OF GOSSIPING DRAMA!

While all this was happening, Amanda found herself a man as well. In an unfortunate twist of fate, Amanda’s lil’ crush and first true romantic interest on the show happened to be the brother of the she-devil herself, Carlene. Bah! Chenoweth’s character is so perky+evil+awful that it just makes you want to run right up to her and give her a big ol’ Texas bear hug. As Luke (Carlene’s bro) and Amanda indulged in a sensual meal at Booby-Licious the worst happened. CARLENE. She strolled in and, of course, didn’t like what she saw.

Later, Carlene sees a couple tumbling around in the bushes having some fun and she thinks it’s Amanda and Luke. As it turned out, the couple was actually Gigi and Burl. Of course, Carlene and that dastardly mind of hers figures out she can use this intel to her advantage. She decided the best thing to do would be to blackmail Amanda — DUH! Carlene gave Amanda two options: (1) Either break up with Luke, or (2) have the entire city (well, all who matter) of Dallas find out about Gigi and Burl’s secret-too-soon love affair. Amanda bit the bullet and sacrificed her love-life for her mother. Isn’t that sweet?

But then it got good. Gigi is one of my favorite characters on the show because, while she can be bitchy just like all the other Good Christian Bitches, she ultimately doesn’t care what people think of her. She’s a take-me-how-you-see-me kind of gal. Toward the end of the show Gigi figured out what her daughter did for her and took it upon herself to tell the entire church about her and Burl’s burgeoning relationship.

And, thankfully, it appears as if Amanda will get a second shot with Luke. Phew. We can’t have her rolling in the Land of Singletons for long!

Lots of other stuff went down on the show last night, including: the advancement of Heather and Andrew’s relationship; the return of Sharon’s son, Bozeman, who brought with him a good amount of drama; the dawn of another Cricket power trip; and a church fundraiser that could’ve used some religion.

Overall, the episode was fun, entertaining, and–unfortunately–quite enjoyable. If you’ve never watched an episode of GCB and are willing to put up with a few over-the-top-high-society southern belles, then you should definitely give next week’s episode a big ol’ Texas chance.
