This is a true statement, everyone: Carnival Films, the company behind Downton Abbey, will be releasing a clothing line inspired by the fashions of the wildly popular upstairs/downstairs drama. So worry not, dear Lady or Gentleman, because soon you will have your chance to purchase the finest swag this British period drama has to offer.
Honestly, I’m not sure what to think about this. I thought it was a joke at first, but I was quickly proven wrong. And, actually, I think it’s probably a smart move on the production company’s end. Not only will they be bringing hip vintage-y threads to the masses, they’ll also be generating an entire line of household wares and products, including homeware, wallpapers, beauty products, and stationary — because no fine estate is complete without a study furnished with the classiest of pens and inks and papers.
The production company has decided to go through with the clothing line, a scary/uncertain endeavor for any company, given the immense popularity of the show and spike in people’s willingness to purchase period-piece wardrobe items.
While the company stands proudly behind this decision to perpetuate their brand, they’re not venturing into the fashion industry without any apprehensions. “It’s a very slow burn the moment you get into retail, it’s extremely cautious, it has to test the established brand…No one wants to launch products if the show’s going to be a flop,” Carnival Films’ managing director Gareth Neame tells CNBC.
