The Nina Dobrev – Ian Somerhalder split has been causing the interwebs to have a meltdown, especially those who are fans of The Vampire Diaries. Never fear, VD fans, for your Damon/Elena shipping hearts won’t have to worry about the show being affected by Nina and Ian’s real-life problems.
This actually brings to mind one of Hollywood producers/studio/networks’ biggest nightmares. They hate it when co-stars start hooking up, especially on TV shows where they have years working together ahead of them. There have been many, many incidents in the past where co-stars fall in love and then have a nasty falling out. What happens then? Well, even if they are ‘consummate professionals’, it makes everything tense on set and it becomes extremely difficult for them to do love scenes together. Take Chad Michael Murray and Sophia Bush on One Tree Hill – they were married for 2 seconds before she realized he was cheating on her, and the showrunner of One Tree Hill had to actually change the story because Sophia refused to do love scenes with Chad.
Now, both Ian and Nina seem slightly more professional than that and sources have said that they remain committed to their job and they know that Damon and Elena’s story can’t be affected by their personal feelings. This does seem to be a more amicable breakup than most breakups usually are in Hollywood, especially because the sources are all adding that Ian and Nina will ‘remain best friends’. While there have been wild theories flying around about the actual cause of the breakup, there is some evidence that cheating is involved – and if it is, both Nina and Ian are a lot more professional than we thought possible.
