RECAP:

Daniel is in Paris and a man approaches him at a cafe and says he’s with the FBI – Agent Drexler. He says the government needs his help and says they need to talk someplace private. They walk by the river and Drexler says the government arranged the lecture he’s giving at the Sorbonne because of a Dr. Sung that will be at the lecture and will give him a pen when he asks for an autograph. Daniel asks what’s important about the pen and all he is told is – national security and need to know.

Daniel tells Natalie he should cancel his lecture and she says he’s always wanted to lecture at the Sorbonne. She asks if Miranda saw the agent and he says he didn’t hallucinate Drexler. Natalie says he may have deluded himself into thinking he’s fine when he’s not. He grabs the phone to call Kate. Natalie reminds him it’s 6 am there but he says she’s an early riser. She’s up but is in the shower with Donnie. She decides not to take the call.

Paul runs into Max at school and asks how he’s doing. He asks if he’s happy having the big house all to himself with Daniel gone. Max admits that he misses him and Paul agrees they need to get him back but he will only come back if the Chancellor lets him teach again. Paul shows the Chancellor an article he says that Daniel will post in the paper and then will file a lawsuit under the Americans with Disabilities Act. He agrees to have him back if he apologizes. Paul tells Max to get Daniel to say he’s sorry.

Meanwhile in Paris, Daniel sits conducting and working on a lecture. A mime approaches him mimicing his gestures. Daniel says he’s being mugged by a mime after he notices him then tries to hide behind his paper. He continues working when Drexler shows up. He says he convinced his superiors to tell him more about Sung. He’s a neuro pharmocologist whose developed a smart pill.

Daniel says it’s impossible but Wexler says it has. He says the Chinese want to use the pill for military purposes but Sung wants it available to everyone. Drexler says if he helps, he could be in on the clinical trials. Daniel says this is the kind of thing he would like to be involved in so he’s sure it’s a delusion. Drexler is confused and Daniel tells him to go away.

Miranda comes out and asks him who that guy was he was talking to. That cements it and he chases him down and asks what to do with the pen. Drexler tells him to take it to Notre Dame, follow a marker and hide it under a cobblestone nearby. Daniel sees Miranda talking to a man after he chats with Drexler. She introduces the French Ministry of Culture, Serge, but she was telling him that she can’t go on the trip he was talking about.

Serge excuses himself. Daniel kisses her and asks what’s with Gerard Depar-don’t. She says he damaged her cello and he asks about the trip. She says it’s a performance for a cultural exchange. Miranda tells him where the tour goes and he asks why she didn’t mention it. She says she’s through chasing her career and is putting them first. He kisses her.

Daniel lectures about Paris being like love, art or faith. He says a Gene Kelly movie was his first introduction to the city. He says this is most people’s first introduction neurally to the city. He says when your idealized version collides with reality, you can feel deluded, disoriented and even paranoid. He looks around and sees the Chinese party come in. He says it’s extreme culture shock and is known as Paris Syndrome.

He asks what this tells us about the brain’s ability to adapt. He signs autographs after. Henri approaches and asks him to dinner. Others comes to speak to him and then Dr Sung is there and hands him a book to sign. Daniel scribbles an inscription as Sung checks the escorts with him. He keeps the pen and heads to the cathedral, as directed, after he leaves the Sorbonne. He finds the compass marker and paces the steps off looking for the loose step.

But then there’s a mime there again acting odd as Daniel tries to count. He sends him off then finds the loose cobblestone. He pretends to tie his show and tries the brick then dumps the pen in and replaces it. He stands and walks away, looking nervous.

Max runs downstairs to answer the phone. It’s Daniel. He asks how Paris is and he says that’s a stupid question. He asks about mail. Max tells him that Kinney will reinstate him as long as he calls. Daniel realizes he wants an apology and calls him an ass. He says he doesn’t even want the job and Daniel asks why the hell he’d want to come back. He says he’s with a gorgeous woman and living the dream. He hangs up.

A van pulls up and men grab Daniel, shove him in and drive of. It’s a Chinese guy and he asks what they want. They search his belongings and ask him where it is. He asks what and they say he’s taken something that doesn’t belong. The Chinese guy says his government was foolish to involved him and must consider him expendable. He says he has 24 hours to return what he’s taken or he won’t be safe.

The van stops and they toss him out into a pile of trash, throw his bag at him and peel away. Daniel looks around terrified and runs off. He heads back to the apartment and sees that it’s been trashed and thoroughly searched. He calls out for Miranda and then calls her. He asks where she is and she says she’s out. He tells her to go to the Embassy now and not to come home. He says he’ll meet her there.

He grabs his bag then realizes the Chinese took his passport. He calls Kate and she makes small talk but he tells her to focus. He says to call Drexler in Paris that he’s working a case with. He says to tell him that his passport was stolen and he needs to be let into the Embassy. Kate asks if he’s all right then agrees to call the Embassy.

Max tells Paul that Daniel doesn’t want to come back and Paul says they need to convince him that Kinney is desperate. Paul goes to Kinney and asks for a raise and more research money. He says to forget it and Paul encourages him to make a counter offer. Kinney says he’s greedy and then Paul reminds him about the lawsuit and article but Kinney is unmoved.

A woman comes out and introduces herself to Daniel. She’s Agent Drexler and is sooo not a generic white dude. Now he’s panicked.

He looks at her credentials and says the guy had legitimate looking credentials. He tells her about the Chinese and what he did. He says the fake may be an agent for a foreign government. She asks Miranda to go to the apartment with agents while she retraces steps with Daniel. Back in the US, Kate is packing to head to Paris because she says he’s caught up in a conspiracy or is cracking up.

Donnie tells her that if she’s worried, so is he and he says he’ll go with her. Daniel shows Drexler the loose brick but it’s not loose anymore. He approaches the mime from earlier and tries to get him to talk. The mime zips his lips and then Drexler asks who he’s talking to – there’s no mime there. She says they need to go back to the Embassy.

He takes her to Henri at the Sorbonne and he says he knows nothing about a visiting Chinese delegation. Daniel says the Chinese are covering the tracks. Agent Collins calls Drexler and says it’s a false alarm at the apartment. The place is neat as a pin. He says he must have a hell of an imagination. She says she knows he did important work with the Chicago field office and offers to help him find medical help. He refuses and she says there’s nothing more she can do.

At home, he tells Miranda that the Chinese put the place back together to make him look crazy. Miranda says he needs to talk to someone else. Natalie is there and says not to mess up his relationship with Miranda. Miranda asks if he’s talking to Natalie. He reminds her that Miranda also saw the fake agent. He gets a call from Sung who says he’s at the Pont Neuf.

Sung tells him to be careful and not trust anyone – even those closest to you. He asks Miranda if she’s part of it then says he has to go. She asks to take him to the doctor and Natalie agrees. He says they’re working together and leaves. He goes to where Sung says he’s hiding. The man is lying there shot and bleeding. Daniel calls out for an ambulance.

Daniel is at the police station telling the story. He goes over the fake agent, then Chinese agent then Sung shot dead. Daniel thanks him for understanding. The guy says that he thinks he’s pretending to be an international spy. He says the Embassy didn’t believe him so he shot a random Chinese person to make his story credible. He says the guy’s name is Lang, not a professor and is there on a work VISA.
Daniel says the Chinese faked the papers and are trying to make him disappear. The cop demands the truth.

Paul asks Max what the first rule of academia is and he says – don’t have sex with your students but Paul says it’s “publish or perish.” He tells Max to take the article to the newspaper and tell them that his world-renowned boss wants it published. Max says Daniel will kill them.

Kate shows up and Miranda is thrilled to see her. Kate introduces Donnie and Miranda says he’s at the police station because he was found with a dead body. Kate says they will take care of it. Donnie says he wants to see him and the cop says unless he’s licensed to practice law in France, he can’t see him. Kate explains that Daniel’s mental state is fragile. He says that’s very helpful and he says now that he knows he’s crazy he can hold him for psychiatric evaluation.

The guy gets a call from a higher up and he’s ordered released. He says Daniel has friends in high places. They let Daniel go and he rants about getting access to the crime scene files and they tell him he needs to get home to Miranda who’s worried sick about him. They come in and see her suitcase there. She asks for a minute alone with Daniel. They go into their room and she says she’s headed to Berlin for the tour.

He asks why she’s going on tour with Pepe le Pew and she says that Serge was the one that got him out. She says that he showed up three weeks ago out of the blue and she broke up with Serge so they could have a chance because he was the one that got away. She says she can’t deal with the paranoia and him talking to people that aren’t there. She says it scares her and she’s not strong enough to deal with it.

Miranda says Kate and Donnie can take care of him now that they are there. She cries and tells him she’s sorry, then leaves.

Donnie tells her that if she’s worried, so is he and he says he’ll go with her. Daniel shows Drexler the loose brick but it’s not loose anymore. Miranda says Kate and Donnie can take care of him now that they are there. She cries and tells him she’s sorry then leaves.

Donnie and Kate wait as Daniel comes out. She asks how he is and he says he’s an idiot for thinking there was a woman who could put up with his crazy and she thanks him. He says he doesn’t blame her and Donnie says he didn’t dream up all of this since there is a dead guy – who happens to be Chinese. He asks what they can do and Kate says they can do what they do in Chicago.

Kate says there is a puzzle there and his best therapy is solving puzzles. She says let’s solve it. They go to the dead worker’s address and she says he moved in there last year and is working a factory job. She says that she saw him a few days ago and he seemed happy not suicidal. A car pulls up and Drexler gets out and tells Kate they’re conducting an unauthorized investigation.

Drexler says to get on a plane or be in trouble. He says he can’t leave because he doesn’t have a passport and she hands him a brand new one.

Kinney rants to Paul about Daniel publishing the article. He says he has donors threatening to pull money and the ACLU breathing down his neck. He says it’s a disaster and Paul asks what he expects. Kinney tells him to fix it and Paul says it won’t be that easy because Daniel’s price has gone up.

Kate says they can still follow up on it. Daniel sees a mime again who is giving him clues but he can’t understand what he means. The mime calls him a crazy American and an idiot and Kate asks what’s going on and he says he’s been hallucinating mimes. That one was a real one. Daniel says his performance was real and races off. He says they have to catch a train, not a plane.

They race to the train station to stop Miranda. He tells her not to get on the train. She’s with Serge and she asks what’s going on. He says they were all real people putting on a performance to make him look crazy. He says all this was done to make him seen dangerous. Miranda asks who would do that and he points to Serge and says he wanted to make him want him instead.

Kate says he’s usually right and then Miranda turns to Serge and seems to be debating this. He sees the mime playing a cello and then rethinks and says Serge broke her cello on purpose so he could use it to smuggle something across the border. He grabs her cello case and smashes her cello while Miranda screams no and Serge calls for the police. Kate finds something and asks what it is.

Serge denies knowing what it is and then they realize that it’s something he was trying to sneak into Tehran. Kate says they need to arrest Serge, not Daniel. They do. Daniel apologizes about her cello and Miranda apologizes about the things she said but he says that he really is crazy and that one day he’ll have another break and now they know she can’t handle it.

Kate calls and gets news on Serge who may be an Iranian double agent. Donnie tells Daniel that he’s right. Kate gets a call from Max for him and hands him the phone. She and Donnie toast with wine while he goes to take the call. Max tells him he can be reinstated with no apology, a parking spot, a 35% raise and more research money. Max begs him to come back. Daniel says to let him squirm and then accept. Max is thrilled. He says when he gets back they need to hang out more but Daniel has already hung up.

Daniel says he’s going back to the hotel and tells Kate and Donnie to enjoy the sights. Donnie tells Kate that there’s nothing worse than losing the girl you know you’re meant to be with. He says he lost her once and wants to make sure it never happens again. He drops to one knee and takes her hands and proposes. She start to hyperventilate and says again? He smile and nods.

Daniel plays the piano and sings by himself. We see Serge packed off by the cops while the fake Drexler watches. Daniel sees I Love Paris in the Springtime. Miranda walks on the cold streets. Donnie and Kate kiss. Paul sees Daniel teaching again and smiles. Max is also quite happy. Natalie sits beside Daniel as he sings about how much he loves Paris.
