The Real Housewives of New York City's Sonja Morgan Interview: CDL Exclusive

If you ask most people who their favorite personality on Real Housewives of New York City is, you’ll get a resounding, “Sonja Morgan!” Sonja has long been a fan favorite on the New York City version of the famous franchise, and for many fan, the entire franchise as well!

As part of the show Sonja is seen in nearly 150 countries and has been named “favorite NYC Housewife” on Watch What Happens Live by Andy Cohen, and “favorite housewife of the entire franchise” by Tina Fey. She is also featured on Perez Hilton’s “all-time favorite housewives” list. But this famous housewife didn’t get her start or gain her popularity just from the show. In fact, she had made a name for herself long before the show came around. We had the opportunity to ask Sonja some questions about her lifestyle brand, “Sonja in the City,” her busy life, and the new season of The Real Housewives of New York City premiering March 11 on Bravo at 9/8c. If, after you’ve read our interview with Sexy Sonja, you didn’t get enough of the fashionista, tune in to Watch What Happens Live when Sonja will be a guest on March 11 at 11PM EST on Bravo.

Here’s a little background on the popular housewife and entrepreneur. Sonja is the ex-wife of John Morgan, son of Henry S. Morgan (great-grandson of J. Pierpont Morgan) and Catherine Adams (great-great-granddaughter of John Adams, the second President of the United States). She went on to have daughter Quincy with him.

Sonja was working on a Bachelor’s degree in marketing at the Fashion Institute of Technology while traveling the world as a model and actress. Sonja has always had a passion for fashion and the finer things. In the late 1980’s she made her mark in the luxury brand consulting field and built an international client base. Sonja’s goal is to bring luxury into the mainstream by making the finer things more affordable. Sonja went on to create a biographical screenplay, and to produce the film The Marsh, starring Forest Whitaker. She is also known for her exceptional choreography and soft burlesque singsong skits which she’s dubbed “cabralesque” at her well-known Sonja in the City events.

Now, on to our interview.

CDL: You wear so many hats and have your hand in so many different ventures. What do you feel drawn to the most? What is your passion?

SM: First and foremost, I’m a mom. Secondly, I enjoy building my fashion lifestyle brand because I do that naturally. Thirdly I’m an entertainer so I love writing choreographing and performing. Lastly, I spend my leisure time working on my charities – supporting children, artists, animals, and the LGBT.

CDL: You have recently expanded your fashion lifestyle brand “Sonja in the City.” Tell us what that means for the brand and what fans can expect.

SM: “Sonja in the City” is the entertainment branch of my brand which is different from my international fashion lifestyle brand. Sonja in the City is my special events where I like to write my singsong skits and perform soft burlesque, which I have labeled “Cabralesque”. I generally do this in support of charities. Very tongue-in-cheek and inspirational to get people through tough times. I also like to be able laugh at myself to keep it all in perspective.

CDL: Producing, choreographing, performing, writing, event planning, and starring in a hit show. What is the common bond that ties everything together?

SM: Again I think my charities are the bond that ties the preceding together. I start with the artist that I am and I enjoy working with Fellow artists, raising money and supporting them. As well as supporting the LGBT which makes up a huge body of the artist field. I inspire children to think out-of-the-box. To be an artist is a luxury. “To support an artist is a luxury” to quote Henry Adams from The Education of Henry Adams. Great book. He also said a sable on the bed is a luxury!

CDL: Tell us what your international fashion lifestyle brand includes. How will your brand be featured in season six of The Real Housewives of New York City?

SM: You’ll have to tune into RHONY to see how my brand evolves in season six. But I am pitching jewelry, perfume, lingerie, clothing, accessories and have done the due diligence with my showroom partner. The brand ID is finished. We have a logo book that is so beautiful. All is ready to go with the right merchandising investor.

CDL: Tell us about the most memorable event you’ve planned.

SM: You will see the most memorable event I planned on this upcoming season. There are snippets of me doing my “Cabralesque” in the preview. A word I coined from Cabaret and soft burlesque. Pretty racy stuff out of context! It was in honor of LIGLBT Youth Center on Long Island with David Kilmnick. Did cameo alongside off Broadway and Broadway performers .

CDL: Where do you draw your fashion inspiration from?

SM: My collection will Influenced by Hermes, CHANEL, Burberry’s but a more affordable. Because that is what Sonja Morgan is known for. Luxury for less It will be more along the priceline of Theory and Marc by Marc Jacobs. When I do my 20 minute red carpet ready and 20 minute recipes in the toaster oven at Macy’s I go to those floors to do my autographs. Because that’s my point of sale. I sell more fashion then toasters across the board.

CDL: What are your plans for expanding your line?

SM: My plan is to get an investor to go global Focusing on England, United Emirates, the US and very possibly France.

CDL: What has contributed most to your popularity on the show and throughout the entire franchise?

SM: I think what’s contributed most to my popularity according to the feedback I received on my website through my newsletter on my YouTube Twitter Facebook and Tumbler is my honesty and willingness to share all my tips and secrets and the fact that I inspire others to work with what they already have to achieve the best lifestyle they can and how navigate tough times as I do. “To live in the moment not in fear.” SM
