Backstrom Recap 1/29/15: Season 1 Episode 2 "Bella"

Tonight on FOX Backstrom continues with an all new Thursday January 29, season 1 episode 2 called, “Bella,” and we have your weekly recap below. On tonight’s episode, an arson investigator enlists the S.C.U.’s help after a firebug’s latest crime gets escalated to attempted murder when it involves a family. Although evidence points to a local, Backstrom [Rainn Wilson] believes it may be someone who’s the least likely suspect. Meanwhile, Valentine tries to help helps Niedermayer recover stolen evidence.

On the last episode, Emmy Award nominee Rainn Willson starred as Everett Backstrom, an unhealthy, offensive, irascible – albeit brilliant – detective who sought the worst in everyone, and he was usually right. After a five-year banishment to the traffic division for offensive behavior, he has returned from disgrace to lead Portland’s newly minted Special Crimes Unit (S.C.U.). Tasked with navigating the city’s most sensitive and serious cases, he must solve each crime as he tries, and fails, to change his own self-destructive behavior. In the series premiere, the S.C.U. investigates the death of a college student. Initially deemed a suicide, the team discovers the boy’s death was in fact a drug-fueled homicide. With Backstrom’s unorthodox investigative techniques, the team must utilize all of their individual skills and work together to catch the killer. Meanwhile, Backstrom’s doctor DEB CHAMAN (guest star Rizwan Manji) threatens to fail him on his physical if he doesn’t start making healthy choices, and prescribes him to make one new friend. It seems that regardless of his general dislike, no correction loathing of firefighters, Backstrom is still going to have to work with them on tonight’s all new episode. According to legend, firefighters and cops never could get along but the reason Backstrom appears to take it to a whole new is level is the fact the D’Agostino brothers happen to be firefighters. The brothers were his childhood nemeses. They beat him up and sometimes they would even burn him.

So, fast forward a couple of decades, and now wonder Backstrom wants everything to somehow be their fault.

Apparently, there’s been rash of fires all over the city. And after finally having enough with getting nowhere – the arson investigators have called in for help. So, now, the detectives are on the case. And they’re the ones that have to deal with the weirdoes.

And they are weirdoes!

Because arsonists don’t set fires just when they’re bored. No, most of these people actually get off on watching and setting fires. So the people the detective have to speak to or merely ask some questions for some background tend to bordered on the unstable side. And that’s something Peter later figured out on his own when a known arsonist handed him a piece of paper that had the words “call me” burned into it.

It freaked him out and had even shaken the normally professional Nicole. Though, unlike Backstrom, those two didn’t stop looking for suspects whenever someone unnerved them. Meanwhile Backstrom is so set on finding fault in the Fire Fighters that were first on the scene – he’s not even taken time to fall up on his own leads he got from Valentine.

You see Backtrom had come up with a theory. He believes the firefighters were starting fires with the intention of robing the place they were supposedly trying to save. So he had Valentine search for items that were destroyed or missing after ach fighter the alleged arsonist had set. And Valentine did do his job. He found an item that was fenced but almost blew his cover as an informant when Peter instead of Backstrom was sent to collect the item.

But Backstorm was on to something with that theory of his. After he had made a impromptu stop by the fire station, he had found a dead canary in one of the cubbies. Almost as if it had been left there as a message.

So Backstorm bought that cubby owner, Larry, down to the station. Because if one of them was prepared to sing then the detective wanted to get the full story directly from the source. However he was stopped, during questioning by the way, when a lawyer from Larry union just happened show up with one of the D’Agostino brothers. It seems no one wanted Larry with the police for long.

Yet after Backstorm caused a rift between the brothers and may have planted some evidence – Larry came looking for him. He said he didn’t join the firehouse to be crook. In fact he joined because most of his family was once in the Fire Department or with the EMTs.

Speaking of EMTs, after Larry left, they were called for an incident involving Backstrom and rather than help him – they shocked him and then threw him out of the ambulance into the rain. So, as it turns out, the firefighters have a lot more friends that he does.

But, while that experience wasn’t nice, it did at least open his eyes somewhat. Because the firefighters were thieves. Though they weren’t arsonists. So that meant there was still crime left to solve.

A quick look at the files however quickly solved that mystery. For it looks like, before then, Backstorm hadn’t looked at the case as anything that wasn’t nemesis connected. So once he took those particular blindfolds off – he saw that the arson investigator had been lying on the all forms she gave them. And there could ony be one reason why she would do that.

They caught the investigator as she watching a new house. And as for the D’Agostino brothers – before they went to jail Backstorm had manipulated into revealing where they hid his kite thirty years ago. So at the end of this episode he was enjoying himself at the park with Valentine.

THE END!
