Gary Marshall Dead: Happy Days Creator, Eminent Director and Producer, Dies at Age of 81

Gary Marshall is dead. The man behind shows like “Happy Days,” and iconic movies like, “Pretty Woman” and “The Princess Diaries,” passed away at Burbank Hospital aged 81-years, confirms Michelle Bega, his publicist.

Marshall died at 5.00 p.m. due to pneumonia complications, followed by a stroke at the hospital, Bega said in an official statement. The legendary director and producer has not only acted in films since late 1950s, he was also an avid basketball fan. His repertoire consists of 18 directorial ventures, including movies like “Valentine’s Day,” “Runaway Bride” and “Beaches.” He is also behind the famous movie, “Pretty Woman,” putting Richard Gere and Julia Roberts on to the Hollywood map.

Marshall’s stint with television began in 1970 when he created an adaptation of “The Odd Couple, Neil Simon’s famous play for ABC. The sit com was an instant hit among viewers and scored several Emmy nominations for its running five seasons. He also introduced a popular cultural icon “The Fonz” that became what is known as the artistic milestone.

“Happy Days” was one of the most sought after shows on television during 1976-77 season, slipping to second spot the following year and to no. 4, the year after. The Fonz became so popular in that time with his leather jacket, that Winkler eventually scored Smithsonian.

Needless to say, his first blockbuster film came in the 90s with “Pretty Woman,” starring Richard Gere and Julia Roberts as the prostitute. This romantic comedy became a worldwide success, grossing $463 million at the box office. Roberts earned an Oscar nomination for the best actress, while the film was nominated for the Golden Globe award in best comedy/musical category, reported Variety.

Born in The Bronx, New York, Gary Marshall graduated from Northwestern University. He is survived by his wife, three children, six grandchildren and his two sisters. “He loved telling stories, making people laugh, and playing softball, winning numerous championships. Even at age 81, he had a record this year of 6 – 1 pitching for his team,” Bega said in a statement. Many Hollywood celebs posted their condolences and heartfelt wishes for Marshall who helped them further their career in Hollywood.

“The loss today of Garry Marshall is deeply sad – for our industry, and for our Guild,” Directors Guild of America president Paris Barclay said in a statement. “Garry’s gift for storytelling brought joy, laughter and an enormous, beating heart to every screen, large and small.
