Alice Vaughan and her associates are private investigators. And although they specialize in completing the harder jobs that not even the cops or the feds could assist with, they managed to all get duped by the man they knew as Mr. X.

Apparently this Mr. X is a unique conman. He’s just smug enough to warn Alice that he’s about to commit another job, but was also smart enough to somehow always elude her whenever Alice and her people have tried to catch him in the act. So Mr. X has become something of a legend around the office. He’s the white whale that they all want to catch for the notoriety if not just to prove to him that this hadn’t all been a game.

And he does think of his “work” as a game. It seems that the messages he leaves for Alice tell her what he’s about to do and then asks if she wants to play? Yet, neither her job nor his was one big game so the man known as Christopher Hall was eventually told by his own associates that they had to pull him from the long con he’s secretly been running on Alice.

Alice had unfortunately fallen in love with the man she had known as Christopher and she had actually agreed to his marriage proposal because she hadn’t suspected anything and neither did her friends. In fact, her associates all loved Christopher and had gotten so excited about the upcoming wedding that they were already making plans. And picking out the wedding cake.

So it had come as shock to Christopher who was secretly Mr. X that his people wanted to pull him. He had thought he been doing a pretty great job with Alice and so he had tried to fight Margot’s decision. But Margot had seen right through him and she knew that Christopher had been more concerned about Alice than he had wanted to let on. And therefore that was one of the reasons she pulled him.

She said Alice and her firm was going to receive enough backlash to destabilize them so she didn’t need him to “pretend” anymore and she also told him that she sent in a man named Reggie to clean up after him. Though Christopher had tried to go against the plan and had even ended up asking Alice to elope with him. So he had been ready to rebel because he did care for Alice, but she had turned down their one chance at marriage because she said she had to work on finding Mr. X.

And she added that they could elope once she catches the guy. Thus “Christopher” kissed her as if everything was fine and then he just disappeared. Which was funny because Alice had later changed her mind about eloping and she would have gone with him to the Alps if he hadn’t left already and she hadn’t found their house devoid of everything connected with him.

Although, at first, Alice hadn’t understood. She had gone home and had found his half of the closet entirely yet she had initially thought that had been a mistake so she had tried his office next. Only his office had literally disappeared overnight and so that’s when she realized she had given him her life savings.

She had actually transferred over four million dollars to him because she had thought that would be easier when they bought their newest home. So Alice had been beating herself about that and her best friend/business partner Val had been trying to calm her down when someone finally started to ask the right questions. They asked why would a conman purposely target a private investigator of all people?

Yet, by time they realized what “Christopher’s” true purpose it had been too late. “Christopher” had gotten in their firm’s records and had locked them out. So there was a chance that he could have stolen millions from all of their clients and there was nothing that anyone at Anderson/Vaughan Investigations could do about it.

Only that was also the strange part. Danny who was the tech wizard had eventually found his way back into their systems and he had managed to change all of their security codes. But “Christopher” had had hours and he hadn’t taken a single dollar. Nor did he bother to let any of Alice’s clients know that her firm had been hack.

So it was almost as if he hadn’t bothered. Though it did to Alice who figured out Mr. X had taken advantage of her in order to remain one step ahead, but she hadn’t wanted to do as Val suggested. She hadn’t wanted to inform their clients that they had been hacked because she said they would all drop a security firm if the security firm couldn’t even protect themselves.

And therefore Alice wanted to bury what happened. However, Agent Dao of the FBI had found out that man he’s been looking for has been working in the area so he had gone to the firm one day. Where he then asked Alice and Val if they knew the man he was talking about and he hadn’t believed them when they said they couldn’t help. So he followed Alice when she later left the building out of pure frustration and he saw her break into someone’s car.

And naturally he knew that something he said must have driven her into doing, but she still told him that she couldn’t help him with his case. She said her clients’ rights to privacy was more important and she downplayed the scene he had walked in on. So he recognized the brick wall when he saw one.

Yet Alice’s nightmare wasn’t over. She and her team had later gone over why Christopher would hack them but not take anything and so that’s when they remembered Seth Hamilton. Seth was a billionaire tech genius and he was about to launch his newest product so it had been Alice’s firm that had run security checks on everyone invited. And “Christopher” went on to use the information they found to impersonate someone that he knew wasn’t going.

“Christopher” whose real name was Ben had gone to the launch party and he had blindsided Seth by pretending to be one of his heroes and so Seth had foolishly allowed him to get close enough to see then steal the flash drive that carried the plans to his newest contract. However, Ben had seen Alice at the party so Reggie had to move quickly to get him out of there. And afterwards he warned his friend that Margot wouldn’t like it if he kept looking at Alice like that.

So they went back to Margot’s and were just about to enjoy their latest pay day when they when they realized the flash drive had been trap. Margot had loaded in her computer and right after she did so – Alice and her associates emptied all of their accounts. Including their offshore ones and it turns out the flash drive didn’t even have the tech data on it. It had merely been a ploy.

And that’s how Alice conned the conmen.

THE END!
