The courthouse is filled with media and families of the victims. Peter Stone and Anna Valdez (Monica Barbaro) are questioned about the suspect, Dylan Oates (Peter Coventry Smith). In the courtroom, Dylan informs the court he waives council as its only about whether he gets bail. One of the parents shouts to hang him, while others yell that he killed his boy. He gets no bail.

Stone and Jefferies walk towards their office and both admit they doubt Voight’s claim that Dylan confessed; because one of the victims was Olinsky’s daughter, on the plus side they do have a witness who saw him start the fire, but she has trouble with her vision now.

Jefferies wants his ASA team to figure out why. They all know he is a monster but they need to give a reason to the jury or they won’t be able to comprehend the monstrosity. He tells Stone that cases like these could make his career, but if he loses it will destroy his (Jefferies).

Alvin Olinsky comes to see Antonio Dawson, who offers his condolences, same with Laura Nagel (Joelle Carter) from the ASA office. Olinsky privately talks with Antonio about an attorney who could cry coercion; it is possible. Antonio wants to know if he confessed; Olinsky said the son of a bitch killed Lexi.

When Antonio returns, Laura implies things look a little “hinky”; Antonio says he doesn’t know, he wasn’t there so he didn’t hear anything. She says she is on the team but she wants to know which team they are on before the game starts.

Antonio and Laura go to see Dylan’s parents, who swear he couldn’t have done this; his father says they have rights to not talk. He then complains asking when the media “pricks” are going to leave them alone. Antonio sarcastically says unfortunately they have rights! Mrs. Oates informs them that Dylan was a loner who wouldn’t go to a rave; he was a data processor and 8-hours on the computer was never enough; none of which is an element of murder.

Antonio closes the door and talks to Peter Stone about kids. He wants to grab Olinsky and tell him it is going to be okay, but its not going to and never will be. He admits he didn’t actually hear the confession, saying only Voight and Olinsky did. Stone knew all along but is furious it took Antonio 24-hours to tell him the truth. They argue about ethics and what is right, when Anna barges in saying Albert Forest (Bradley Whitford) made a motion to suppress the confession.

Stone meets with Voight, Voight says Stone needs to trust him and he has the right to take the stand to tell his story. Stone says having a right and doing what is right are 2 completely different things. He does offer his condolences to Voight before he leaves,

Stone stands up and court and says the people will not oppose his motion to suppress the confession; upon hearing that, Olinsky leaves the courtroom. While Albert Forest says he is glad the people see the weaknesses in their case; Stone says they intend to proceed to trial and it is granted.

Anna gives Stone a list of articles about the Kimball factory, including one that says Kiddie Sex Den! They learn that the raves were thrown by pedophiles to draw in underage teens, and Anna says after she spoke to a shrink, one of the consequences of child abuse is pyromania. Stone tells Jefferies he wanted a reason, now they have one. Jefferies isn’t so sure believing this could give the defense a sympathy defense; and orders them to use the actual facts they have.

Chicago Fire’s Lt. Kelly Severide on the stand explaining what they found in their investigation. Forest asks Severide about Mr. Kimball and his failure to follow fire codes. Tamra is on the stand, describing Dylan the night of the rave while Stone shows the same items to the jury. Forest asks her if she was drinking and doing drugs, she admits she took some Molly but she is persistent on what she saw; even though Forest badgered her.

Voight is next on stand, who confirms what they found in Dylan’s apartment. Forest tries to intimidate him, bringing up Lexi and if they could get someone convicted for the fire, it would give Olinsky some peace. The judge wants to know why the confession wasn’t put into evidence and if the ASA can’t believe his words, how can he expect the court to believe him now?

Stone and Anna are back in the office, when Anna asks if he could ever defend someone like Dylan Oates. He says he would never have to think about it. He is a prosecutor because he is thinking of the victims and right now he is letting 39 of them down. They decide to subpeona the writer, Anders of the article about the raves being used for underage sex.

Anders says he doesn’t need preparation for court because he is a journalist, and has the 1st amendment and shield law at his back. Stone says what he does isn’t journalism and he can have him arrested for contempt. Anders says he was just thinking about a weekend Stone spent at the Huntington Hotel in Grand Beach, 4 years ago.

Stone demands to know why he is doing this, Anders asks if he has any idea the lawsuits he would have to deal with from the 39 families? Stone tells him to prove its true; he refuses to reveal his sources. Anders says to give his best to Joan (Teal Wicks). When Stone tells Joan that Anders knows about their affair, she tells him not to put him on the stand, but she figures out he isn’t asking her permission; he is only warning her. She angrily walks out of the restaurant.

Anders is a hostile witness, and admits the article is about underage sex, where pedophiles got kids drug and high to get them to do what they want. The defense has no questions and the prosecution rests.

Anna comes to Stone’s office, asking if he is okay. He is frustrated that Forest didn’t question Anders nor his article. Anna says maybe Anders has something on Forest. Back in court, Mrs. Oates still believes her sweet boy couldn’t have done that; but she does explain that after he came home from a fishing trip with her brother, Frank Dylan was never the same.

She just confesses that she knew this whole time her brother was molesting him, but Dylan never told her. She reveals that the fire and killing of all those kids isn’t Dylan’s fault if he did it; its all on her.

Stone sits with Forest and reveals that he knows it wasn’t a mistake sending a list of all those articles; he did it so Stone could introduce the defense for him. He asks if Mrs. Oates was lying, learning its all about perception and Dylan was never abused. Stone says there are 39 kids dead; Forest says and there is 1 living he needs to protect. Forest is very confident that the trial will end in a hung jury!

Stone wants to put Dylan Oates on the stand, the judge gives Forest 24 hours to prepare his client. He sends Antonio and Laura to find a witness who hasn’t come forward from that night. At the memorial site, Antonio spots Olinsky who says he should have killed Oates when he had the chance; but gives them a tip when they find a note from Chloe, who never gave them a statement.

Laura comes to Chloe’s room to talk. She begins to cry when she sees the note she left there for her brother, who died in the fire. She admits to recognizing Dylan, who was arguing with some girl. The girl was Tamra, and they confront her with the knowledge that she knew more than him just stepping on a paper bag.

She brushed him off on social media, and he knew she went to a party rather than going out with him. She had posted it on facebook; she says all those people are dead because of her. Anna says she will have to testify but Stone says only if they need her.

Dylan is on the stand, denying that his uncle did anything weird to him. Stone approaches the stand asking him why he said his mother knows nothing about his life; then asks about his facebook. Dylan claims he isn’t on facebook; but Stone says he opened a fake account, which he denies.

Stone produces a picture of Tamra Collins, and Dylan says its the blind girl who accused him of doing it. Stone asks if he didn’t know her why is her pictures all over his account? Dylan is jealous of the pictures showing she is having a good time. Dylan finally snaps and says what would he care if she would rather hang out with garbage than him?! Stone has no further questions and closing arguments happen next.

Forest claims Stone picked Dylan as his patsy. Stone admits he didn’t tell them why Dylan started the fire and killed those 39 kids. He didn’t have to, because Dylan told them himself. Dylan stalked a girl who didn’t want him, while he hit behind social media and a keyboard; where deceit and voyeurism grow. Dylan pounds his fist on the table over and over until the judge orders him to stop.

In Dylan’s head, Tamra had the perfect life and he wasn’t invited. He hated that she had a life on facebook and he wasn’t part of it. Stone asks if those tears are for the 39 dead or are they for his own life. Dylan lunges at Stone and he is restrained and physically removed from the courtroom.

The jury decided he was guilty of aggravated arson and 39 counts of first degree murder!End
