Fear the Walking Dead (FTWD) begins tonight with Jeremiah Otto (Dayton Callie) showing a video of how the great American Experiment failed and the only way to protect your family is to be prepared and how to better prepare yourself is to order his 4 set video series called “Teotwawki: The End of the World as We Know It”. He explains that through cattle ranching he can teach people how to survive off the earth.

All the people from the ranch gather for Charlene’s (Lindsay Pulsipher) funeral. The woman speaking says Charlie was a brave woman and she would have survived this had she not be out rescuing the “unprepared”.

Madison Clark (Kim Dickens) stands up and introduces herself and her kids, Nick (Frank Dillane) and Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) and offers her condolences for Charlene, revealing they lost loved ones, Travis (Cliff Curtis). She thanks them for their generosity and promises to repay it.

Jake Otto (Sam Underwood) says they all have loss, they need to grieve but its more important to process it. He is interrupted by Vernon (Hugo Armstrong) who says its more important to be prepared. He understands they need to more but its more important to find out who shot down the helicopter; Jake tries to appease him but he demands a timeline.

Jeremiah tells him they will scour the crash site and when they find out who it is, they will act. Troy Otto (Daniel Sharman) tells Vernon his father means there will be pay back, and will do whatever it takes to make this right. Jake says they cannot afford to lose themselves, they are more than just a mob and will meet their justice when they know what they are dealing with. He reminds them that his father says, “If you plan for the future, plan for a better one!”

Gretchen (Rae Gray) introduces herself to Alicia and Madison during dinner service, after they were harassed by people who think they are feeble; Madison and Alicia believe these people would be more angry with Troy if they knew what he had done. She gives her condolences and asks Alicia if she wants to join Christ Risen for bible study; Madison asks about it but Alicia says she is Jewish so Gretchen says they will do Old Testament then.

Luciana “Lucy” (Danay Garcia) tells Nick they need supplies, water and weapons as they must be prepared to leave. Nick says they will take her cuffs off soon and she will be able to walk around; she can’t forgive what they did and as soon as they free her she tells Nick they will go; he nods. Nick reveals he only wanted them all to be safe and in one place and he had the chance to kill him but didn’t. Lucy reassures him that would not have made them safe. She reminds Nick he is not a killer.

Madison enters their cabin asking how Luciana is doing; but when she hears “alive”, she realizes its Troy in the bed and not Nick. Troy says he liked her speech and by using Travis’ name she wanted them all to know she was a victim too. She questions him if he considers himself a victim?

She shares she was a guidance counselor in high school before all this, he said he wasn’t able to attend school as he was too busy serving the ranch. He says his father understands that complicated problems call for complicated solutions. She tells him killing people is simple; he then reveals that is why he chose her because she understands this world and him.

He didn’t pick Nick but she asserts they are a package deal. Troy says Nick doesn’t deserve his place there and she knows it, she promises he will earn it. As Troy is about to exit the cabin, she tells him the bed was made this morning, he returns and makes the bed.

Victor Strand (Colman Domingo) drives through a long line of people who are waiting in line for water. He asks the guards about his friend Dante and if he is alive but they insist he wait at the back of the line like everyone else. He offers them the keys to the car but they throw him down and point their guns at him when a man stands over him telling Victor he looks like crap.

All 3 of them are in the cabin when Madison tells them they need to win the people over; she tells her kids to stay away from Troy until she wins him over too. Nick suggests they start over somewhere else, find a house, grow crops. He is defiant when Madison says they are not leaving after he says they have options. Madison harshly reminds Nick they are staying because they dragged him out of the hell hole he was in. He is sure Luciana won’t be welcome and Madison says then he has a choice to make.

Jake is talking to his father about the flight route, saying something is wrong about it. Madison comes in the room, but Jeremiah says people usually knock before they enter. She needs reassurance, worried that some people resent them. When Jeremiah says that is only natural as they are strangers, she tells them they are not strangers to Troy.

She says he threatened Nick and wants him to keep a leash on Troy; Jeremiah says this is a free place for people who need help, she says she needs it. He says she isn’t an easy person to like, she says especially when someone threatens her family. She reveals if Jake hadn’t shown up when he did, they would be dead as Troy murdered people calling it “science”. Jake says she is justified in her anger but Jeremiah says its on her if the people don’t like her.

Jake brings Madison into another room, asking if Troy hurt her? He promises to take care of Troy but she throws it in his face that both him and his father keep saying that. He reveals that Alicia saved him just as much as he saved her. She wonders if he is worried about the helicopter; he says it was probably some crackpot scavenger. She says whoever it is, she wants to meet him and she sits down to watch Jeremiah’s videos.

Alicia and Nick watch the horses when she shares how their dad used to take her to the equestrian center. She is waiting for Gretchen to go to their first bible study, saying Madison said they should get to know them so he is invited too.

He asks Alicia if she wants to stay and she reveals she doesn’t but everywhere there are just different circles, so why not this one? She apologizes for what Madison said saying it wasn’t fair to blame him for Travis’ death and tells him its a bad time to form a conscience. He asks her what happened to her out there but she walks away without answering.

Troy is working in one of the gardens when Jake arrives and orders him to stay away from Madison and her family. Jake says they came under his invite and they trust him but Troy says they came there not to get eaten so he shouldn’t flatter himself. Jake begs him not to do this as he is the only one who believes in him because if the ranch knew what he really was…

Troy firmly believes he was helping those people at the depot, but Jake reminds him when their father is gone, this all falls on them and they need to lead this place together. He needs him to stay away from the Clarks and Troy says he hears him.

Gretchen and her friends bring Alicia to a grate and follow her down the ladder. Once inside, they pull out a bong and drink alcohol. They recite Bible quotes and Alicia asks where Jeff is? Gretchen opens a container and pulls out a bird cage with a walker’s head inside. Alicia starts to laugh at it while it grunts.

Madison picks up a tape that says “Raw footage 6.13.96 Roll III “TEOTWAWKI”. Madison sees a nasty side of Jeremiah and how harshly he treated his wife and children, ordering a young Jake to tend to his sniveling little brother, Troy. Jeremiah turns it off, saying it wasn’t his finest moment, saying its funny where they start and where they end up.

She asks about the boys’ mom and he says that was Troy’s mother; Jake’s mom was his first wife. He reveals his first wife died before all this. Madison shares that her father was a drunk like Troy’s mother and he reveals it was the alcohol that killed her; it was horrible at the end and it was Troy who tended to her in the end and she hated him for it. He was busy selling “buckets” at the time.

Dante and Strand talk and laugh about old times with Thomas; he is sadden to hear that Thomas has died but it is nice to be back with someone who is like-minded. Alicia shares with the others what life was like outside the ranch, she says its chaos and ruin; then it changes you but not like Jeff, something worse.

She asks Jeff who the Ottos were? She is told they were the founding family of the ranch; Jeremiah saw what was coming and Gretchen tells her Jeff is the first one they saw that was changed, but still alive. They feel Troy does what he does to protect them but Alicia says they can’t rely on the Troys of the world anymore and sometimes they need to handle their own crap. Gretchen asks Alicia what is the worst thing she has done out there, she admits to killing a man and it felt easy!

Dante brings Strand out to the dam as his thugs hold a man on the ledge saying before the event, this man worked for the cartel; his job was to take from good, honest people and to kill those who refused. Dante shares there is no room for such people in his world now.

Dante pushes him off the railing into a pit of walkers; Strand watches in shock but then the men grab him when Dante asks him if he really thought they were friends in the old world. Dante says everyone wants his water, but Strand says he wanted some food, shelter, and a cocktail would have been suffice; Dante disagrees.

He tells Strand he cannot help the need to take as it is in his nature; as the men shove Strand forward he shouts that Dante needs him. Dante taunts him that Strand wants to serve him and advise him. He says Dante needs transport, guns and more men, he could organize that since water is the currency now.

Dante says Strand is a thief who stole from Thomas and wonders if Thomas died believing he loved him? Strand admits he did love him but Dante feels he would say anything. He says Strand will have to work off his debt and feel just like the people he has stolen from and feel powerless; the men take him away.

Nick wanders the ranch, where he sees an elderly couple dancing, he smiles until Troy shows up offering Nick to go hunting with him. When Nick declines he tells Nick to come and earn his keep; Troy drives off with Nick in the truck.

Madison stands at the fence when Jeremiah joins her, telling her Nick went on a war hunt. She says Nick doesn’t hunt, he is a city boy asking how long the hunts usually last. Jeremiah says it varies but promises he will return safely. She jokes with him that Alicia is finding God but Jeremiah says she is finding her place and offers Madison a cigarette.
Madison reveals her kids never had a “place” and Nick is an addict. She spent the last 5 years waiting on a call from the morgue but here she is still protecting him. Jeremiah asks if Madison wants to know why he tolerates his son, Troy and asks her to take a walk with him.

On the hunt, the dogs find a walker, the guys release the dogs and the men chase after them. Meanwhile, Jeremiah takes Madison into this place they call the pantry. He says some feel this event is God’s Revelations but he says it is a chance at a new life, a chance to make amends. He broke Troy in the old world and in this one, he has a purpose.

He promises they will build something better than the world before; asking her if her and her family are up for it, even though it won’t be easy. She says they are absolutely up for it.

Troy attempts to sneak up on Nick, who jumps him and puts the gun to his throat. Troy says the ground is soft and Nick could dig a grave real easy; they’d suspect Nick would have killed him but no one would know for sure. Nick wonders how long it would take for him to turn and Troy tells him 87 minutes. Troy tells him if he is going to do it, time it and mark it in his book; he begs him to record it.

Nick doesn’t understand what is wrong with Troy but Troy says he needs to know the nature of life and why they spoil. Nick fires the gun next to Troy’s head, as he is in shock, Nick grabs his book and rips the pages out of it, laughing. Troy looks at him believing they could be friends now. Madison comes to see Luciana, who thanks her for waiting for her to heal before they leave. She says Travis saved her life and Madison admits Travis was a good man, a much better person than she is. She tells Lucy they are going to survive now at all costs and not throw that away.

Jake asks Alicia if they were turning water into wine, she smiles and says praise Jesus as the group walks back to the ranch where everyone is having a pig’s roast. Jeremiah reveals one of their teams has been gone for 36 hours without word and they need to prepare for the worst. He says Troy is going to take a search party out, 4 men volunteer to go as well as Madison. He encourages everyone to enjoy their meal while Madison joins Troy at his table.

Strand receives a jug of water, and he quickly drinks it. He looks out from the bars and sees Daniel Salazar (Ruben Blades) who said, “I told you, you would drink it all. I told you I would be your guardian angel!”
