How To Get Away With Murder begins tonight with Annalise Keating (Viola Davis) watching Wes (Alfred Enoch) kicking the soccer ball and reminiscing him when he was a child playing in the playground. Wes lets her know he got the internship, but refuses to introduce her to his girlfriend.

She wakes up in a jail cell where she is told she is not being released but transferred to county until her bail hearing. As Annalise is being strip searched, Wes’ burnt body is being examined on the autopsy table.

Bonnie (Liza Weil) comes to visit Laurel (Karla Souza) in the hospital, informing her Wes died before the fire and questions her about seeing anything before the explosion. Laurel believes Frank (Charlie Weber) did it and wants to tell the police; Bonnie swears Frank wouldn’t hurt any of them. Laurel orders her to leave or she will tell the police everything.

Bonnie rushes to Oliver (Conrad Ricarnora), Asher (Matt McGrorry), Connor (Jack Falahee) and Michaela (Aja Naomi King), telling them Laurel cannot see any of them because she is in shock. Connor calls her out on her lies but Bonnie stands strong and tells them to all go home and she is going to see Annalise.

Bonnie goes to see Frank, who denies being involved in the explosion and Wes’ death. Bonnie then visits Annalise believing its the Mahoneys who did this because they found out Wes was Wallace’s son. Annalise says it doesn’t matter who did it, only person locked up is her. She only wants Bonnie to take the case feeling they are under attack and it can only be her to do it.

Laurel is laying in her hospital bed having flashbacks to when her and Wes are in the bath discussing the ripped condom. Laurel admits she isn’t on the pill, but she will be fine because she just had her period, they both laugh, not stressing about it.

Meggie (Corbin Reid) comes to see her, telling her the detectives are there to see her, she asks if the drugs can hurt her baby. Laurel informs the police that she went into the house and heard something downstairs, but that is all she remembers. She tells them Annalise didn’t do this and it is their job to figure out who did it.

Michaela returns home to a note left from her mother who went back home. She claims to be sad that Wes is dead but Connor confronts her on that since they all knew she hated him just before he died. In the county jail, her cell mates argue over showing her the ways of the prison system.

Nate Lahey (Billy Brown) is confronted about his attempt to visit Annalise right after he went to see the medical examiner. Just as Nate is about to lose his job, he informs them he is sleeping with his superior and any kind of demotion could be construed as sexual harassment and he walks out of the office.

Flashbacks to Asher is in the middle of an argument with a girl on campus, who accuses him of being a Little Trump after he grabbed her ass. He insists that she looks exactly like his girlfriend, Michaela; she then calls him a racist and a pervert, but Wes comes to his defense saying she does look like his girlfriend. Asher smirks saying he isn’t a racist.

In present time, Asher wakes up Michaela asking her how she is doing. She turns over and just wants to sleep. Connor comes to see Ollie who wants to be left alone. Oliver tells him Annalise told him to delete everything on her phone before he knew Wes was dead; he believes it means Annalise did it. Connor says Annalise is being framed but Oliver thinks he is lying about that like he was lying about the night Sam died, but he stops Connor from telling him anything. Ollie insists on being alone.

Annalise struggles with her new surroundings as Bonnie and Nate meet. Nate says he can’t tell her anything he finds out and he went to see Annalise to look her in the eye to tell him the truth. He asks Bonnie to tell him what he knows and this is her only shot to tell her side. She tells him to go and he tells her to never call him again.

Michaela, Asher and Connor come to see Laurel in her hospital room. Annalise has been fighting about using the bathroom, so when her mean cellmate leaves she uses the toilet, just as Bonnie comes to see her. Bonnie explains they don’t need Nate because Frank and Bonnie will find other sources. Bonnie promises to get her out of there.

Frank arrives with an entire call log that came into the police station that night. Frank reminds Bonnie that she is as good as Annalise, and she can do this. Laurel tells them Annalise isn’t the one who did this. Connor asks her why she didn’t since even though she adored Wes, she would have done it if she knew he was going to turn her in, and she probably had Frank do it.

Connor implies Laurel’s baby is Frank’s and informs them Oliver could be going to the police with the knowledge of Annalise requesting him to dump her phone. Michaela says it was the Mahoneys because Wes testified against them and Asher accuses Connor because of his lack of empathy. Laurel tells them the baby is Wes’ and breaks down. Connor tells her to get an abortion now and Asher begins to beat him up.

Wes is lying on the grass when Connor tells him he looks like a picture on the Middleton brochure. Connor tells him he just got out of therapy talking about Oliver. Wes encourages him to just give Ollie space.

Meggie is busy cleaning Connor’s wounds wanting to know what caused Asher to snap like that. Connor avoids answering and asks her how she is doing but she doesn’t know. Michaela and Asher are arguing about her lack of emotions. She tells him to go home because she is staying with Laurel to make sure she doesn’t end up on suicide watch.

Bonnie and Frank are going through the police log when they find a call from Hannah Keating who called just after the fire started and the only way she could have called about it is if she knew the explosion was going to happen or she was working with the Mahoneys.

Annalise remembers that she called Hannah, she had been drinking and burning all her paperwork. She told Hannah to come take the house back from her because she was done with it since nothing good happened to her from the time she stepped foot in the house. She tells Bonnie that Hannah finally won since she always believed Annalise killed Sam (Tom Verica), and not it took her doing this for Hannah to have it all.

Michaela remembers running into Wes at a small arts and crafts sale, where he is looking at jewelry. She thinks it is for Meggie when he shocks her saying it is Laurel. She believes the secret is because they don’t want Frank to find out, but promises to keep quiet. She lectures him about jumping from girl to girl and he may need to be alone for a while.

Michaela returns to Laurel’s room who wants to be distracted from everything that is happening. Michaela tells her about kicking her mother out, claiming she is a horrible person. She reassures Laurel she is there for whatever she needs and decides. She struggles through her physical pain until she can press for more pain meds.

Annalise’s cell mate reveals she knows Annalise is a lawyer; commenting on how bad ass she was when she was wearing those nice clothes screaming at an old white man, and why she couldn’t represent her. She tells Annalise that no matter how hard they climb, they will always find a way to pull them back down.

In court, the prosecution does not want Annalise to have any bail while Bonnie argues for her bail. Frank arrives in court but doesn’t speak. The Judge is inclined to set bail but they are given time to produce a valid reason why she shouldn’t be released.

Connor comes to see Oliver, confused whether Annalise is innocent or not and implores Oliver to go to the police, saying he is no good for Oliver and to move on. Oliver says he is his life but Connor reveals he was sleeping with Thomas and the Keating group are bad people. He says he is broken and sick and needs this all to stop and pleads with him to do what he never could; begging him to end all this.

Back in the court room, the prosecution brings forward that they were in the midst of giving Wes an immunity deal to testify against Annalise; papers he was about to sign when he was killed in the house fire. Bonnie jumps up and says the Mahoney family had the money and the means to do this; with the evidence presented Annalise is denied bail.

As the prosecution office is speaking to the media, Frank walks out of the courtroom and Nate smiles at him. Asher comes to see Michaela apologizing about his behavior and promises to never act like that again. She tells him he needs to apologize to Connor as well, and he does.

Michaela, Asher and Connor lay in bed watching the news conference as Annalise is searched again at the prison. Oliver who is by himself, goes to his laptop and opens a file with Annalise’s phone records on it, he saves everything on a thumb drive.

During the news, they reveal that Wes died from asphyxiation due to smoke inhalation, which confirms their belief that Annalise started the fire in order to kill Wes. Laurel admits to Frank that she saw someone in the basement, escape out of the storm door and asks if it was him.

He says it wasn’t him but Laurel tells him it should have been him that died and Wes would have still been alive had Frank just stayed away. She looks him dead in the eye and tells him she doesn’t blame Annalise for that, she blames Frank because it is always him. She confesses that she loved him so much more than she ever loved him and again says it should have been him.

Nate returns to see the medical examiner and confronts her on telling him before that Wes died before the fire. She says that was her initial theory and BEFORE she did the autopsy and theories change all the time. Nate looks around suspiciously.

Back in her cell, Annalise is given a sandwich from one of her cellmates. She cries as she begins to eat it. Bonnie calls Frank and on his voicemail she reveals they are saying Wes died in the fire, which isn’t true. She tells him she needs him; at that very moment he is at the police station confessing that he killed Wes.

In the final moments, Wes leaves the police station and Frank tells him to get into his car because they need to talk. Wes gets in and Frank drives away.
