The Vampire Diaries begins tonight Bonnie (Kat Graham) stabbing Stefan (Paul Wesley) with the cure after he killed her beloved Enzo (Michael Malarkey). Matt (Zach Roerig) wakes up from a nightmare of the Maxwell Bell ringing and people burning. He wakes up and grabs the medallion Dorian (Demetrius Bridges) gave him from the chest the historical society found.

Matt stumbles with bloody feet, setting off the alarm in the infirmary; Alaric (Matthew Davis) pulls a gun on him asking how he got in there and if he is okay. Bonnie answers her phone crying, she tells Damon (Ian Somerhalder) that Elena (Nina Dobrev) is okay but Enzo is gone and his brother, Stefan killed him. She orders Damon to stay way, but he says not until he knows she is okay and he will deal with Stefan. She confesses she gave him the cure and he is human now.

Stefan is driving, having flashbacks of all the people he has killed when Caroline (Candice King) calls him. She begs him to come home and he says he can’t because he can’t face her nor Bonnie. Police pull him over and take him away when they see blood all over his hands and shirt; leaving Caroline calling out his name.

Matt shares with Alaric that he can feel the heat from the flames as if he were actually there. Dorian tells him it might be true because the medallion he handed him is a colonial witch’s talisman tied to the Maxwell bloodline.

Matt questions how they could be memories and Alaric says he could be linked to someone from then and that is how he walked through the stones under the infirmary. Dorian reveals the skeleton they found had written those same memories in his journal where he was working with a coven of Bennett witches. Matt thinks Bonnie may know something about it. Matt gets a call and shares that things are bad.

Damon shatters his drink at the Salvatore mansion when Caroline informs him Stefan is at the police department. Damon agrees to meet her there so Stefan isn’t alone as he processes all the evil memories; Bonnie isn’t answering the phone and Damon says who could blame her.

As he is about to leave, Cade (Wole Parks) offers his condolences telling Damon they are both free but since Stefan is human he can recall his soul and return him to the fiery pits of hell at midnight. He is interested in the journal written by Ethan Maxwell in exchange for Stefan to live out his natural life.

At the police station, Stefan is confronted with 32 murders where his fingerprints were left in the past 2 months. As Bonnie struggles believing she hears and see Enzo in the house, her mother Abby (Persia White) arrives to see her, after Caroline called her.

Caroline compels the police officer to let Stefan go, but before they leave she sees all the people he has killed. Stefan worries about his deal with Cade; Caroline informs him it is off since he is human but he only gets to live until midnight unless Damon comes through for them.

Damon arrives at the infirmary, telling Alaric, Dorian and Matt that he has 6 hours to give Cade the book or Stefan dies. Matt stands in his way, saying he has to kill him if he wants to stop him. Matt stabs him in the neck without a second thought.

Bonnie watches as her mother covers Enzo with petals. She tells Bonnie its time to say goodbye and its time to return him to the earth. She says he doesn’t want her to because he is still calling out to her. She believes if Enzo is trying to reach out to her, there must b e a way to reach him. Her mother says she shouldn’t mess with such things but Bonnie insists her mother returned for a reason, and to let this be the reason.

Stefan is gathering his belongings when he hears the young daughter of the real estate agent he killed, asking them to find her. Caroline learns Stefan killed the woman and left her in the trunk of a car. They are both upset when they hears the little girl has no one; Caroline and Stefan go to find the woman’s body.

Damon worries about Stefan’s life, while Alaric says once they know why the journal is so important to Cade, they will know how to stop him then Damon can have the journal. Matt and Dorian sedate Matt so they can find out what they need from his memories.

Matt has memories of the colonial times as Ethan Maxwell, where he is talking to Bennet witch about ridding their village of the savage beasts killing people. Sybil (Nathalie Kelley) arrives and Ethan is unable to resist her.

Caroline and Stefan search for the woman, Karen with Stefan admitting he doesn’t know what he thinks or how to deal with what he wants or what he thought he was going to have. He doesn’t know what to do, he rushes to the car where the woman was, the trunk as blood but she is gone. Caroline feels there is still a chance she is alive.

Matt’s memories bring him to the cave where they found the journal, it is filled with the sirens’ treasures, tools and weapons. Seline (Kristen Gutoskie) is in the cave and they both force Ethan to add the tuning fork to the bell. Sybil reveals that 12 strikes from the tuning fork will unleash hell fire on the entire village. Damon is frustrated, telling them to cut to the chase and find out why the journal is so important.

Abby and Bonnie join hands as they call on Enzo, asking him to give them a sign if he is there. The wind blows and Abby sees the ripples that exploded when Bonnie cradled Enzo. She blows out the candles saying this isn’t grief, it is something different. She says Bonnie has opened her door to wherever Enzo is. She demands that Bonnie closes the door but she refuses to leave Enzo in there. She hears Enzo call to her and faints.

Stefan finds Karen, who stabs him; he begs Caroline to save Karen. She gives Karen her blood but when she gives Stefan her blood she remembers it won’t work because the cure is in him. Meanwhile, Ethan writes in his journal and when the Bennett witch asks what Sybil wanted he repeatedly tells her he cannot say, but hands her a coded message.

Ethan begins to ring the bell and she orders the witches in the village to stand as one and chant so he cannot destroy them. Matt is dying so Damon gives him his blood to save him. He continues to see that the witches saved the village but they all died in the fire minus Ethan and Beatrice Bennett, the witch.

Beatrice goes to the cave and seals Sybil and Seline inside. Sybil says the 100 souls are on Beatrice and Ethan’s souls, but there is one way to escape hell by releasing Cade from hell and allow him to walk the earth, then kill him. Ethan is told if Beatrice will not free them, he must kill her. They both begin to sing but Beatrice locks Ethan away.

Ethan says the secrets are locked in the room with him, and he knows how to kill the devil but he cannot say the words. Matt awakens saying the answer is in the journal, but both Damon and the journal are gone.

Abby holds Bonnie as she seizes. She pours fuel on Enzo and lights him on fire; Bonnie struggles while her mother says she had to do it to break all connections with him. She tells Bonnie that Enzo didn’t open that door, she did. She reminds Bonnie that Enzo loved her and wouldn’t want her to suffer and tells her she has to say goodbye.

Stefan wakes up to learn Karen is gone, he says whether it is today or tomorrow what is coming for him is what he deserves. They can hear sirens in the distance. Damon arrives home and hands Cade the journal, unsure if he will keep his end of the bargain. Damon wants to know if anyone has earned their way out of hell. Cade says he wouldn’t want to give him false hope and burns the journal.

Stefan is able to watch as Karen is reunited with her daughter. Caroline returns to the car with meds for Stefan. He admits that he just can’t see them being together; that they are leading totally different lives. He doesn’t know how to make things right, neither does she.

Bonnie waits for Bonnie, offering his condolences for Enzo. She doesn’t think she can do it but he says she is the strongest person he knows, promising to tell her about their history and how bad ass the Bennett witches really are. She feels if she was such a strong witch she could have saved Enzo. He tells her to find comfort in the fact that Enzo loved her and will always be with her.

Stefan returns home to Damon, admitting that it hurts to be human; he says he is going to change and go see Bonnie but he can’t forgive himself so he doesn’t know how Bonnie could. Damon reminds him Bonnie is a better person than either one of them. He thanks Damon for saving him and asks if there is a chance for redemption with them. Damon says absolutely.

Alaric apologizes to Dorian for how crazy it got when Damon arrives. He won’t apologize for saving his brother, admitting he is selfish but tells Alaric to grab his blindfold and his headphones because he knows how it ends. Stefan arrives at Bonnie’s house but is taken by someone before he can get to the door.

Damon picks up the relic Cade created and believes it is what can kill him, but Kai (Chris Wood) enters the cave saying he is sorry to interrupt but what if he has a better idea?

THE END!
