The Young and the Restless spoilers tease a simple explanation. Adam (Justin Hartley) likely escaped the cabin explosion and is playing dead in order to protect his wife and son. Yes, Adam’s love for Chelsea (Melissa Claire Egan) and Connor (Gunner and Ryder Gadbois) has caused him to make an incredible sacrifice. Adam left the country and his family to protect them.
So no super soapy mystery. Adam wasn’t pulled from the explosion by Chloe (Elizabeth Hendrickson), who has been holding him hostage somewhere since September. And a third-party didn’t do so either. Ian Ward (Ray Wise) didn’t escape from prison, capture his nemesis inside the cabin and drag him off. Patty (Stacy Haiduk) didn’t run away from the mental health facility for the criminally insane, happen by that specific area of the woods on that day and restrain Adam for the past seven months.
Instead, Adam wasn’t rendered unconscious by the chemical Chloe used to tranquilize him. He cleverly faked that effect for her benefit and pretended to become unconscious. Then after she went outside to rupture the gas line, he escaped on his own.
Adam made sure that Chelsea, Connor and Nick (Joshua Morrow) were safe, but not by watching them from a spot where he couldn’t be seen on the opposite side of the then-destroyed structure. He was running away from the cabin when it exploded. So Adam later used connections to check on his family before departing Wisconsin.
The events leading up to that fateful day weighed heavily on Adam’s mind and soul. Adam decided that he couldn’t put the people he loved most in the world in danger anymore – something that was inevitable given Chloe’s insane revenge motivation for Delia’s death. Despite the pain it would cause Chelsea and Connor, a drastic choice had to be made. Actually, Christian’s (Jude and Ozzy McGuigen) name could be included in that last sentence as well. He’s apparently Adam’s flesh and blood.
So where has Adam been staying ever since? Well, he left the United States and made his way by boat across Lake Superior to Canada. Adam arrived in Thunder Bay, Ontario, and has been living there ever since.
How fortunate, or unfortunate depending upon one’s opinion, that Chloe just happened to tell Victor’s (Eric Braeden) pilot to land the Newman jet at that destination. Of course, she called ahead and had a car waiting for her. That’s one reason why Chloe destroyed her phone as she left the plane.
When will Adam and Chloe have their certain Canadian encounter when he catches up with his destroyer – and will it be shown in retrospect? Hendrickson is no longer under contract and Hartley is a member of the This Is Us cast for the next two nighttime seasons.
