The Young and the Restless spoilers tease that Dina (Marla Adams) isn’t actually planning to leave the bulk of her estate to Graham (Max Shippee). Instead, her announced will change is part of a plan to test her children’s loyalty. Ashley (Eileen Davidson) and Jack (Peter Bergman) knew that their mother was devious. But they haven’t yet determined that she’s simply playing a game.
Having been off in Europe for decades, Dina returned to Genoa City to finalize the sale of Mergeron Enterprises. The newly formed Hamilton-Winters Corporation now owns her money baby. However, Dina also chose her former home as the point of a business deal in order to reestablish relations with her estranged children.
Longtime viewers were aware of this character. Newer fans who weren’t familiar occasionally heard Dina’s name referenced, or saw her in scant flashbacks. That’s what makes Y&R’s choice to revisit this part of its storyline history particularly intriguing.
Dina was never a main character on the show, even during those years in the 1980’s when she was causing an uproar in the Abbott family. However, Dina’s place in GC society has remained secure because of her link to its legacy characters.
It is fitting that Dina would basically play a mind game with her children in order to see if they really love her. John (Jerry Douglas) never did that.
Graham does whatever Dina asks of him, which now includes willingly playing the lout. He knew that allowing himself to be seen as a gold-digger would damage his reputation, even though Dina’s plan will eventually be revealed.
But one plot point that will need to be reconciled involves Dina’s apparent Alzheimer’s condition. That point will serve to challenge whether Dina knew what she was doing in concocting this manipulative plan.
Connected to that point is the possibility that Graham might be greedy. He now has the power to potentially push the ruse past its intended mark. Could Mr. Bloodworth even be tempted to get rid of Dina as a result?
A seeming few billion dollars worth of motivation must at least cause Graham to consider nefarious maneuvers. So Dina better hope that he is as loyal as she believes.
Past speculation about Graham being Dina’s next husband, or alternatively, her son has yet to play out. It does seem that he merely assumed Jack’s role as a type of second son and that Dina is his mother-figure.
With however everything plays out Y&R fans will wonder if Jack, Ashley and Traci (Beth Maitland) won’t feel betrayed all over again, just as they were decades ago. What type of mother would think of such a scheme to regain their love?
