The Young and the Restless spoilers tease that Mariah (Camryn Grimes) and Tessa (Cait Fairbanks) might become a couple? Soap operas have long explored issues that Hollywood anoints as important. That’s why this referenced potential storyline is one to keep an eye on.
Simply choosing to use the term ‘soap opera’, instead of daytime drama offends certain segments of the masses. Those sensitive souls who claim to be offended mouth preconditioned political beliefs rather than an assessment of reality.
So, Mariah was initially friends with Kevin (Greg Rikaart) and then began to explore a romantic connection. But that didn’t work out. Now, her deeper feelings toward Devon (Bryton James) aren’t being equally reciprocated, which is why she bared her soul to Tessa recently.
Tessa is a new character, who just arrived in Genoa City this year. She’s seemingly fallen for Noah (Robert Adamson) and remains uncomfortable around Zack (Ryan Ashton), who may be her former boyfriend. That past link hasn’t been confirmed, as he could be anything from a brother to a past work colleague.
The preceding two paragraphs were offered for a reason. Y&R has presented both female characters as heterosexual to-date. If Mariah and Tessa are actually being written toward couple status, if that’s simply implied or will be explored in any way, then the show will be saying that both characters are bisexual. That’s significant.
Sexuality is a charged topic. How it’s addressed and explored in the public square matters. While Y&R’s social influence has diminished through the years, it has maintained a voice that speaks to a crowd.
Modern soap operas don’t seek to project traditional norms, as it’s apparently believed that those plot points wouldn’t draw interest. Instead, these shows have promoted subjectively selected slices of the world. This segment of purpose-driven popular culture has used its portion of power to promote social and political agendas. To deny otherwise would be a lie, or possibly naive.
Mariah is Sharon’s (Sharon Case) daughter. Well, she’s one of Sharon’s twin daughters. The other was Cassie (also played by Grimes) who died in 2005.
Grimes’ return to regular contract cast status was welcomed by seasoned fans in 2014. Cassie’s death proved to be enduringly controversial because it removed a terrific child actor from the show, literally killed off a beloved Genoa City character and served to dramatically alter the trajectory of other fictional personas, including Sharon and Nick (Joshua Morrow).
Sustained buzz with exist if Grimes is being asked to enter a storyline that will push people into different moral camps. That would be part of the point, regardless of whatever the TPTB might claim.
