The Young and the Restless spoilers have deeply documented all things Michael Muhney (Adam Newman). His committed social media fan base of more than 100,000 people persist in wanting Y&R to rehire him. Intriguingly, the actor recently stated that he’s started watching the show again.
Muhney previously advised, on a number of occasions, that he’s open returning to Y&R. He and the show were in negotiations in the summer of 2014, but Justin Hartley was hired instead. It should also be noted that executive producer and head writer Mal Young has never said no when asked if Muhney will return someday.
In order to not push fake news, readers must be advised that Young hasn’t said that he will be hiring Muhney imminently. But this is the soap world where all is possible, both on- and off-screen.
Muhney landed a gig as Mr. Gallico on ABC’s popular new show ‘The Good Doctor’. That nighttime job is the most prominent role he’s held since being removed from Y&R in December 2013. However, it isn’t a staring vehicle and surely wouldn’t preclude a recurring, or regular status spot on CBS’ top-rated daytime steamer.
As hardcore fans recall, Muhney took the Adam character to unexpected heights during a run that began in 2009. The adult version of this role was first played by Chris Engen (2008 and 2009).
The always undefinable it factor was instantly evident whenever Muhney was seen. Chemistry with Sharon Case (Sharon), Melissa Claire Egan (Chelsea) and Eric Braeden (Victor) was particularly noteworthy. Muhney is known to have gotten along well with Case and Egan.
Braeden and Muhney had ‘creative differences’. But Muhney has since divulged that Braeden’s presence consistently brought out the best in him and has offered other complimentary comments about his co-star.
This scribe has written about Muhney through the years for a few reasons. The first involved the power of the actor’s consistently outstanding performances. While Hartley’s edition of Adam was greatly liked, Muhney’s version was electric. Modern soaps need a draw and this great actor was always that.
The second reason this digital space has spotlighted Muhney involves redemption. The idea of Y&R actually rehiring this particular actor would complete the comeback. Muhney isn’t entitled to be rehired. No, he’s admitted his own failings, has been classy and is simply asking for another chance.
Y&R could ink Muhney to a conditional deal. And extension could follow if all went well. It’s fair for TBTB to be cautious, as a second fallout could be harder to recover from.
There’s no doubt that interest would be dynamic if Muhney is ever rehired. His initial scenes would be money in the bank. A sustained bump in ratings would also be possible as long as Adam’s return was believable and sustained.
Y&R should give Muhney another shot and also trust its audience.
